So I'm a nursing student and my instructor today said "A man must have been teaching in the classroom! It's a mess!"
She also went on about how most male nurses are sloppy and messy.
I was like "really?"
When I worked as a CNA I would NEVER leave my rooms messy. I liked having nice and tidy rooms!
Do you think male nurses are messy?
My Gosh! What if, instead of gender, she referred to race- ie: "a (ethnic slur term of choice) must have been teaching in this classroom".... She would have been crucified on the CBS evening news. Why do some people think it's OK to make nasty prejudicial comments about men in nursing just because we still make up a minority of all nurses? WOW.
I think if it was the other way around and a male instructor had made a comment about women, it would be a huge deal.
Lucky for them most men don't care. The only reason it bothers me is that it's a double standard.
I, for one, try to be very neat and if you ask all the female nurses I work with they'll tell you I have the neatest handwriting on the unit and that my patient information white boards are always perfectly done (just one example).
I have been in nursing for over 12 years and I have yet to counter a messy male nurse. I think in my opinion males are cleaner. I am a clean freak, so I am always cleaning the nursing desk and work spaces. I have a bad habit of when I go assist other nurses, I will straighten and clean there patients rooms. I cant handle a messy room.
One time, a patient's family member (who I think was probably severely OCD in the first place) was quite intent on redoing my entire bed change because of a couple of wrinkles in the top sheet. She then told me "Don't worry, I understand, it's a man thing. Only women know how to make beds."
I wonder what her reaction would've been if I told her I was transgender.
I wait to clean the med room when the shift is over. Another guy I work with is the same way. Most of the women can't stand the counters to be messy so they clean it during the shift. All of a sudden there isn't much, if anything, to clean up when the shift is over. The girls will tell you I'm a slob but they love me anyway .
I'm a slob. Everybody is neater than me.
I don't think being neat, clean, or organized has anything to do with gender.
I think slobbiness:D can be learned however. My husband used to be a much neater person than me, but he's migrated to the dark side.
Maybe the instructor just threw out a controversial comment to see who would take the bait.
