Are you an introvert or extrovert?

Published

I am a new nurse, immersed in a new (nursing) culture.

Most of my coworkers seem outspoken and very extroverted, however we have a few 'quiet leaders' on the unit.

All of the personality testing I have done puts me just on the brink - between extrovert and introvert.

I am left wondering...are most nurses extovert or introvert?

What do you think?

Is this a supervisor that does your evaluation? If so, perhaps you should ask for a clarification. If she was only making small talk, take it with a grain of salt and try not to be too offended. We introverts are often misunderstood because since we are so quiet people want to write our stories for us.

If you're introverted to the point your not communicating very well with patients, families and coworkers, then you have some work to do.

I was extremetly totally introverted when as a teen and young adult. As I've grown, I still test on the personality tests as an introvert, but I'm not as bad as I used to be. As a charge nurse being an introvert is not an asset because I need to be able to communicate and play well with others. I need to speak up meetings, I need to not be afraid of confrontation.

I think introverts and shy people can be great nurses, especially one on one, but it's not always an asset.

Thanks for the link. Interesting. It says I'm an ENTJ (Fieldmarshal--I kinda like that!) But that isn't exactly how I see myself. When called upon to "lead, follow, or get out of the way," my typical response is, "OK, see ya later. Let me know how it works out." But I suppose I can get a little overbearing, if you put me in a group of indecisive people. Hmm.

This definitely doesn't sound like me in a nursing environment. In a crisis, I'm usually more than willing to let someone who knows what they're doing take charge. But I do try to learn as much as I can in the process, because I know the day will come when I need to be the one who takes charge. Hard to imagine enjoying it, though. A patient crashing scares me to death.

i don't know what i am, to be honest.

i think my outgoing side is more memorable, so those who know me would consider me as such. in my day to day life, i keep to myself. a lot of times i let my calls go to voicemail because i just don't feel like talking, or i'll skip out on a party because i'd rather be alone with a book.

i think, by nature, i'm an introvert who was conditioned to very extroverted tendencies.

i'm wondering if anyone has read personality plus by florence littauer. it divides personalities into four groups loosely based on the four humors.

there's yellow = happy sanguine (your outgoing, fun friend who's great for inviting to a party but probably won't show up on time or help too much with planning)

red = angry choleric (the friend you want around in an emergency because he or she won't go to pieces emotionally and will know what to do, but also tells it like it is with no regards to saving someone's feelings, and a bit bossy)

purple = perfect melancholy (detail oriented, analytical friend who's very creative but prone to taking everything personally and falling down into the dumps easily)

and green = peaceful phlegmatic (nice, agreeable friend who won't start a conflict but also can't really make decisions easily and tends to be a chameleon of sorts)

when it comes to that, i'm purple/red. everyone has a primary and a secondary. you can't be purple/yellow or vice versa or red/green or vice versa.

also, you can "mask," meaning you've appeared to have changed your personality...i mask as yellow but deep down i'm not at all.

my campus minister told me that you should think of how you were as a child, before friends and work and society encouraged you to act a certain way...that's who you are for real. how you act...that's a different story.

sorry, but the purple girl that i am...i love putting things into categories!

in that case i am a purple as well. interesting ....

i was surprised by the 1%. i would think that nursing by nature attracts many counselor-types.

oh well dare to be different!:yelclap:

Flaming extrovert here. I'm at home in almost any social situation, although I do like my privacy and I have to have at least a little "alone time" once in a while. Sometimes my extrovert tendencies make it hard for me to shut up once I start talking, which is not an attractive trait IMHO, but I try!

Extremely extraverted.

I'm extremely extrovert (I knew that)...according to this test (ta for the link) I'm an Idealist Teacher...oh my...great things await me LOL

LOL that is sooo me![/i']

Actually, another INFP here.

What is an INFP? This is my second time within a year hearing these acronyms used to describe personalities, Im scratching my head like huh? Lol.

I honestly don't know what I am. I just want to go to work and be left alone. If I make a friend along the way that's fine. If I don't that is okay for me too. I am usually the one sitting in the corner looking at people make a fool of themselves. I do enjoy myself though.
