Are you allowed to take some nursing courses before applying?

Published

Hi everyone,

I have looke through the threads and when people talk about their pre-reqs they hardly mention Nursing courses like Pathophysiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology II and Growth and Development. I was just wondering if it is just in my school that one can take these courses before applying? Because these are pre-reqs in my school. Are there people who take this class after being accepted... Thanks guys and good luck in all your endeavors. :D

At the schools I have dealt with, human growth and development was not a nursing class. It was a required prerequisite that was in the PE or psychology department or perhaps the child development'/education department. The others may or may not have been open to students not in the nursing program. One school allowed outsiders to take pharmacology (I had to give them a good reason). Otherwise, if it is listed in the nursing department, it most likely is restricted to students in the nursing program. You can shop around and see if the course is open to outsiders at another school.

It really depends on the school you are applying to. I am currently taking Pharm and Patho for a school that required them before the program started ( Because it is a 1 year program). But i got wait listed at that school, however the school I did get accepted into will not allow any outside nursing classes and they must be taken in their nursing program. So basically i have to retake pharm and patho. Just make sure to check the prerequisites for the schools you want to apply. If the growth and development class your speaking about is the Lifespan and development class where it starts at conception to death then school require this as a prerequisite to the nursing program.

psh.. not at my school! nursing courses are when your accepted! ...that'd be awesome if we could knock some of them out..but kind of defeat the purpose of NS anyhow! lol they sure do have lots of prereq's though!!

Thanks guys...all the classes i listed are under the college of nursing but they are required as pre-reqs...so wierd..i guess i am lucky then

Nurs 239 - pathophysiology

Nurse 238 - Principles of pharmacology

Nurs 240 - pathophysiology II

Nurs 224 - growth and development...

Oh well extra studying i guess...but again thank you for the info.

Most schools limit registration to only allow nursing students to take them. At my school you can get special permission for some lower level classes as well as patho, but they are technically only for nursing majors. Growth and Development was outside of the program for me, too (psych). That's pretty awesome that you can take pharm too!

At my school those are all nursing courses, we have the basic A&P, micro, stats, chem but there are no classes like that at all for pre-nursing students. Those are all apart of the professional phase.

In my school we must take pre-reqs to be accepted into program. Human Growth and Development is one of those. We can take "co-reqs" before being accepted and I am now knocking all of those out along with pre-reqs. Sociology, Humanities, A&P 1 and 2, Nutrition, Applied Micro, college Algebra, Aids/OSHA. I will only have the actual nursing classes left by the time I enter. Many at my school do it this way from what I have been told.

patho is a prereq for some schools; not at mine but at a different one i may apply to. at my school, the nursing classes are called "nurs 101, nurs 200, nurs 455 etc" so there's no mistaking them with other courses and no, you can't get in unless you've been accepted. that way, they make sure nurses get all the classes they need :) may not be a problem at all school but at mine, ugh, getting into classes is like a miracle as opposed to a given so i'm glad they do that

I know at SMC (Santa Monica College) they have 2 nursing classes they recommend to take while on the waiting list. They are Calculations in drugs and solutions and Pharmacological Aspects. However, not sure if these will be accepted for other programs I've applied to.

it all depends on the school.

far as i know saddleback and especially for el camino college wants you to complete or have in progress nursing 145 "introduction to nursing"
