April 2008 NCLEX test takers, COME ON IN!

Published

Per the request of janina08 ;) I've started the April NCLEX takers support group. When do you take it? What are you using to study? Would anyone like to review any of the systems/meds that he/she feels weakest on? Let's keep each other in our prayers and good thoughts as we go through one of the biggest experiences of our lives. :) :nurse:

I have a question. I have rescheduled my PN exam several times now and I am supposed to take it saturday. I studied using the kaplan book and saunders practice cd. I dont do well with the kaplan, but Im pretty good with saunders. I dont know if its because Ive been doing the saunders so long now, that I am just remembering the answers. Should I reschedule my exam date again till I get better with kaplan or is the saunders questions closer to actual NCLEX questions? Also, should I try the kaplan online? Any advice would help.

I was also wondering if those who found kaplan helpful was because of the strategies they gave or the practice test. Thanks.

To be honest, Saunders was nothing like the NCLEX. It was wonderful for content, though. The thing is, the NCLEX is such a weird exam that even if you try to remember everything in the book, you just have to think outside of the box. You have to rely on what you've learned and what you know is normal. For me, Kaplan was extremely helpful because I did use their strategies in a lot of the exam. I did a TON of the Kaplan Q-Bank questions and the Question Trainers online. I got a horrible score in all of them. :chuckle I never did Question Trainer 7 because it was about 6 hours long and 265 questions (much like the real exam), but I'm the type of person who can't sit for too long (which kind of explains why it took me only an hour and a half to do 97 questions :lol2:). So, I never did it, but my scores ranged from low 50's to 60's in the Q-Trainers and anywhere from low 30's to high 70's in the Q-Bank.

Kaplan was veeeeeeeeery similar to the NCLEX. I felt as though I was doing practice questions at home, and felt frustrated because I couldn't see the answers right away. :chuckle All in all, though, what really helped me was thinking, but not overthinking or reading too much into the questions. Honestly, some of the questions were very obvious, and some of them were very vague. I got a lot of priority questions, and they were exactly like the Kaplan questions. So, I recommend Kaplan, but I also recommend Saunders. The combination really helped me out. :) Good luck!

congrats or2ca.can you share us some of your tips..im currently doing suzannes 2nd tip..hope you could reply..

hello gwafuh, continue doing the 2nd tip to the tee. I somehow deviated a little bit because I also used Mosbys PDA book and Kaplan Strategies book. This was a week before my test since I was already done with the 2nd tip. I just wanted to find out how Kaplan writes their test since a lot of people here says that it is very similar to the NCLEX. As for me, I think their questions are even harder. As for the PDA book, it helped too because it was divided into systems as well like Saunders and purely prioritization, delegation and assignment. By the way, I didn't even finish it...Bottomline, Saunders was still my foundation. I did not memorize a lot of stuff because this is my weakness...I just made sure I understand. A lot of you who just graduated or about to graduate, I think readiness is the most important thing before you decide to take the NCLEX. When I failed the first time last October 2007, the major factor I failed was I didn't practice questions and was very poor on content and strategy. This worried me a lot because my brain was no longer as it was when I was younger. I graduated way back 1992 from the Philippines and I am now 36 yrs old. I have a toddler and a 9 yr old so I study in the wee hours of the morning when both are asleep for me to get focused. I sacrificed being awake at night and being asleep during the day. Good thing I have my mother in law to take care of my little girl while I'm asleep. This means everything is possible when you put your mind into things and most especially if you pray and trust in GOD...Now I am very proud to be US RN and looking forward to work in the hospital soon.

I hope this would serve as everyone's inspiration. And by the way, do not deprive yourself of some pleasures while you are studying. I still watch my Filipino dramas everyday, American Idol and other shows. I do this wheneverI can't retain any information:typing

GOOD LUCK everyone and GOOD VIBES be with all of you!!! God bless all of you!!!:saint:

I cant sit long either. and when I do 100 questions I do them in 10 quizzes a day with 10 Qs in each. I hope I am still able to focus if I get 265 Qs!! I think Ive gotten too used to being able to review after every 10.

Now Im really nervous because I did the questions in the back of the kaplan book and got 56% :uhoh21: I think I need more time to study kaplan. Thanks!

That's an awesome way to divide the 100 questions! If you get the whole 265 questions, then just remember to take the breaks they give you during the exam. It helps to get some water, eat a snack, and get some fresh air. :) As for the Kaplan book's test, I only did 77 questions of it. Again because I can't sit for too long, and also because I was hoping to get that many in the NCLEX. With only 77 questions, I got a 66%. I also did the CD questions that brings 180, and I got a 61% the first time and a 74% the second time. Don't be too hard on yourself when it comes to Kaplan. Their questions sometimes are a lot more difficult than the actual NCLEX. ;)

My advise to you is a week before your test, do 100Qs at the same time as your scheduled test. I also couldn't sit still doing questions but I did this make it like a habit so every 8:00am, I would answer 100Qs. There are times my daughter would bug me but I made sure that I finish it. I don't know if you read my previous posts. I was really sick a week before my test and the day before, I couldn't take in food. What I did was just prayed to GOD to give me strength to focus on my test and give me the minimum number of questions so I can focus. I just knew GOD was with me because before I took the test I was avble to have breakfast and never coughed a bit while I was taking the test. It took me 2 hours for 75Qs and found out yesterday I PASSED:nuke:

Micha,

I know your frustration. I have been there. But you can't give up. You have to keep trying! Take time to relax and then get back to it! I know how your nerves can get the best of you.... it is a very stressful exam..... you know the material, but the whole stressful experience can make it difficult!

You will be fine, I have failed the exam before and I know it can be discouraging but everything happens in God's time and for a reason. You will pass the next time. Just stay focused on your goals and you will reach them!
