Applied to nursing school with a W or F grade.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Just curious to know if anyone has applied and gotten accepted with a W or F grade. I'm thinking it is similar to an elephant passing through the eye of a needle for a one F grade student to get in. I'm I wrong?

I have a W which was due to being hospitalised for 2 weeks and had followups and physio therapy sessions. I decided to reduce my course load for that semester. Can I ssend my medical records or letter explaining the W with my application?

I had to drop A&P I because I was taking too many classes, while working full time w/ a family. I then took it the following semester (summer) and so far no one has asked me about the (W). I did however, transfer to another school and I had my grades transferred. I just applied to the nursing program, I haven't received a response because we are still taking our finals, but like I said, no one has mentioned that (w). Keeping fingers crossed.

The (F) on the other hand, is something I do not know about. If you don't mind me asking, what class did you receive an (F) on? Does your school look at the overall GPA or only certain pre-clinical classes?

Hope I was of help. Good luck!

Sometimes you can petition to substitute the grade with a repeated course.

I had an F in chemistry due to a job conflict. I retook the class and was accepted to Nursing school. Don't give up.

I was accepted despite some W's in my original degree program. Tore my knee and had surgery. I think that records and registration people understand for the most part, and if you apply to a program that allows an application essay, it is easy to explain them.

I don't have an F right now. I think I just wanted a way to lift my spirits with the onw W I have.

I think it depends on which classes you received these grades in. I got a couple of W's and F's, but they were in "filler" classes except for one: Algebra. I really needed that class for the program and I withdrew from it the first time, and failed it the next. I got into the nursing program in my school, anyway. They looked at my GPA, and it didn't matter. Also, I think it depends on the program to which you are applying. Some programs are a bit more strict than others, so you should check each one out first. Good luck, though.

Well that's good, because an F and a W are very very different.

You have a legitimate excuse for needing to withdraw from that class. Most school applications should have some sort of comment section on them. Explain what happened, short and sweet: "I withdrew from [CLASS] due to an unexpected two week hospitalization mid-course."

They do not need your medical records, as that would violate your privacy.

I think it also depends on when this happend. I have WAY too many W's on my transcript and 3 F's, but they are all from 10 years ago. SInce coming back to school (2 years ago) I have been an A-B student. I had no problem getting into an RN program. I don't think that a W on your record is a big deal, unless you had 10 or more like I did:lol2: . But now I know what I want to be when I grow up!

I was the same as L&Dsomeday, I had a bunch of f's and W's for classes that I took after I graduated highschool. I had to repeat 2 of them, because they were required for the nursing degree, but the rest were classes that did not pertain. Also by the time I applied to the nursing program, I was in my last semester of pre-req's all of which I had nothing lower than a B+. So I think it will depend on what your school looks at when they decide. I am sure you can call and find out if they look at overall GPA or just the grades of the courses that pertain to the nursing degree. If they do look at all of your grades, then maybe you can write a letter of explanation. It is possible, I just finished nursing school, so don't give up!

My first time through college, I either got an A in a class or an F (or W).

I went back re-did my prereqs 12 hours plus an additional 60 credits. I got A's in all the prereqs and supporting classes (4.0), When I was a part-time student and working 60 hours a week I did have to drop out of a few classes to return to work.

My 'new' GPA is a 3.899. I applied last year to 5 programs and got into all of them (couldn't attend because of illness). I recently got into a direct entry Master's with my 3.899.

Yes you can get in with W's and F's.

I have heard of just about every thing happening insofar as getting accepted into nursing school with bad grades. Look, if you've already got a "W", you've got it. The worst that is going to happen when you apply to a school is that they're are going to say, "No and it's because you have a W on your transcript." On the other hand, they could also say "you're admitted. Classes start. . ." and never mention anything about your "W". See the saying I have just below this post? It's true. Opportunities are just out there for the picking. Don't let your "W" stop you. There is a school that will take you. You will only find them by applying. And if you don't take the effort to do it, someone else will get the place in a nursing class that was meant for you.

I applied to nursing school and got in with a W. The W was in a class that didn't matter. It was a global awareness class that my school started and they didn't have they stuff together. You had to have a password to take a quiz online and mine didn't work for about a month, so I had to make-up the weekly quizzes. When I finally did make it up, they claimed that they didn't recieve them so I withdrawed from the class b/c it was gonna hurt my g.p.a.
