Anyone trying to get fit before NS?

I start in August... I'd really like to lose about 20 pounds this summer and get a bit more cardiovascular-ly fit before school starts! Anyone else in my boat and want an accountability partner? :)

I used to have a really nice body....not sure where it all went wrong???:( i just am so hungry all the time....has anyone tried Alli? I'm nervous to take it.

Hey there, I am a former nutrition major and I highly discourage the use of Alli or any other diet supplements unless you are severely obese. Alli works by blocking fat absorption from foods and causes you to eliminate that fat through your bowel movements, resulting in oily, greasy stools and even simply having oily anal discharge. Many people have embarrassing complications from this. Additionally, many people tend to gain the weight back once they go off of Alli because they return to their old eating habits and learn nothing from the supplement. With Alli, most people typically lose up to an extra 5 lbs per year, according to the R.D. I studied under.

The best way to lose weight is through proper diet and exercise because they promote healthy habits and lifestyles. The only real way to lose weight is by burning more calories than you take in. I suggest having your basal metabolic rate calculated (you can easily do this yourself by using the Mifflin-St. Jeor equation). From there, try a plan that sticks to 500 calories less than your basal metabolic rate unless that number falls below 1,200 calories. It is not healthy to consume less than 1,200 calories a day, as outlined by the National Board of Nutrition.

Diet is mostly key in weight loss (I recently put my mother on the paleo diet and she lost 75 lbs in 8 months!), but exercise is also important! I personally prefer high intensity interval strength training because I like weight lifting and hate cardio now that I have patellar tendonitis and can't run long distances quite like I used to. :) It's also nice to build up muscle, as muscles have a higher metabolic rate, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you're burning while sitting around and doing nothing.

Hope this helps! I am not a doctor or nutritionist, of course. Just speaking from personal experience and undergrad studies. It's always a good idea to consult your doctor before beginning an exercise routine or diet plan.

I havent decided if I am going to apply to surgical tech or nursing school, but YES, I am trying to get in shape big time!! I am skin and bones (my whole family is this way -- naturally boney :)) and could use some bulk on me! I don't wanna be the nurse that always needs help lifting/turning because I'm too much of a noodle to do it myself!!

Is anyone studying before nursing school this summer and if so what?

pennie1124: I am reading about fluids and electrolytes, reviewing medical terminology, and beginning nursing fundamentals. You?

I have been trying to lose weight and it is so difficult. It wont come off. I was just recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism *2 weeks ago* and does anyone have any tips on losing weight with hypothyroidism? I was just started on meds for it 2 weeks ago also.

Why before?make a reasonable plan to be fit during nursing school. Some say they don't have time but I started back exercising recently and thrust me, exercise keeps you sane while going to nursing school...I'll say its required!

Great thread! I'm almost 5'8" and started out nursing school already overweight at about 180 lbs (at the most, I should be 145). I gained about 17 lbs in the two years I was in the program. What can I say? This chica likes to eat, haven't met a cuisine I don't like to eat lol I'm Korean so white rice is a big weakness! Oh and I'm a big time stress/anxiety eater so that didn't go well for me.

I made so many excuses and using victim language during nursing school. Hindsight, I did have time to work out, even just for 30 mins. I also could've ate out less and prepped at least some meals at home.

Now that I'm almost six months out from being graduated and licensed, I've been able to pick up my workout routines again. I train in Muay Thai kickboxing, full-on sparring but it's on hold yet again because I got hurt sparring. Ortho doc thinks it's a possible partial ACL tear :/ Gonna do PT to increase strength and stability and get an MRI in a couple weeks.

Meanwhile, I was perusing instagram this weekend and I've been ABSOLUTELY inspired by some of the fitness/bikini competitors I've seen on there. As opposed to female bodybuilding, the fitness competitors focus more on how cut and toned you are. Of course, they look freakishly tanned during comps but out in real life, these ladies have those hard bodies we all wish we had. These ladies eat SUPER clean, drink lots of water, LIFT WEIGHTS and are incredibly dedicated.

I was sick of feeling like a fat slob, eating junk food and feeling bad about myself. I feel like my fiancee doesn't find me attractive anymore even when he says he still does. I hate sitting down and having to adjust my pants so my gut doesn't spill over. I haven't been in a body of water, be it a pool or the lake in YEARS because of how embarrassed I am of my body. I haven't shopped for new clothes in as many years. Forget wearing cute summer clothes like jean shorts, skirts, tank tops, racerbacks, summer dresses. I've been in sweats and stretchy clothes for far too long. My joints ache from the stress of having to carry around extra weight for years. Scary part is my lipid panel and BG have all been increasing over the years. I've got diabetes and heart disease in my family. I finally had it and I want to change my life and health around for good!

The one girl that really inspired me (search for 'ashleehendry_fitness'), she had a baby AND she's a med student. She went from 205 lbs two years ago to 135 and in fabulous shape! She started out using Jamie Eason's LiveFit 12 week program and that's what I'm doing right now. I'm on Phase 1, day 3. Including the month of sold, straight sessions of Muay Thai and the three days of the LiveFit program, I'm down from 197 to 188 today. I took my 'before' pictures and can't wait to see where I'm at in 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks. Been thinking about possibly hiring a coach so I can one day enter one of those fitness competitions and have the hard body and healthy body I've always dreamed of. I am also going to sign up for Crossfit with my fiancee to work on building my strength.

The LiveFit program is free, all you have to do is google 'Jamie Eason LiveFit.' She is one of my favorite fitness models. Her body is just amazing, super toned, not stick thin. It's a whole lifestyle change and you have to be honest with yourself if you are ready to start it. I've made a couple of recipes from the website and they are super yummy. Healthy food can be yummy, you just have to take the time to prep and cook it. Anyway, that's my spiel, let me know if you have any questions!

Yes! I want to lose 80-100 pounds before my 21st birthday/ before I get into a nursing program. But scheduling a work out is hard. I think im going to sacrifice sleep for a few semesters for I can get up early to reach my goals.

I just lost 75 since August, u can do it:)

I've lost 20 pounds by tracking my calories (and increasing exercise) on My Fitness Pal. It's free and the community is/can be supportive. Once I reach my goal I will stay on the site to track my fitness progress. Good luck everyone. You can do it!

Hey there, my mother and I both have Hashimoto's disease, which is an autoimmune version of hypothyroidism, essentially. The most important part of this disease is keeping a close eye on your TSH levels and knowing at which level you feel best. After taking medication for a period of time, your symptoms should disappear. If they begin returning, you need your dosage altered! It can be annoying, but you will eventually find out what is right for you. I have never had problems with my weight, but my mother has. I put her on the paleo diet a year ago and she has lost 100 lbs to date without any exercise. It certainly is possible to do with a thyroid disorder!
