Anyone trying to get fit before NS?

I start in August... I'd really like to lose about 20 pounds this summer and get a bit more cardiovascular-ly fit before school starts! Anyone else in my boat and want an accountability partner? :)

I start in Sept, and yess! I am short (a little under 5'1) so even though I only would like to lose about 5-7 pounds, it's a bit of an undertaking on my small frame. Plus, they always say the last 5 pounds are the hardest. I'd also really like to lose the serious flab on my stomach, legs and arms and get more toned. Partially this is for looks, but I think it will be really helpful to NS as well!

I ran yesterday 1.4 miles, stopping in the middle to catch my breath. Today I ran 1.8 miles without stopping. I used to be able to run 4 miles when I was in better shape... trying to build back up to that!!

Now, not eating when I'm not hungry, that's gonna be an even bigger challenge..

What is your daily calorie requirement? What calorie deficit are you going for?

Mine is around 1700, and I try to eat at least a 300 calorie deficit. If you want to lose 1 lb per week thru diet, you need to be at a 500 calorie deficit. But if you don't change up your exercise routine, your body weight may plateau--which is why it's harder to lose the last 5 lbs.

Just trying to stay fit and plan out how to do that throughout NS. Don't wanna graduate looking like I belong on a feed the children commercial.

I'm currently on a weight loss journey because of nursing school. I don't want to start nursing school in the fall only for patients to wonder how the heck I'm telling them to eat their vegetables, etc. and me looking overweight. I also want to be able to keep up with other students as well as the nurses, so I'm working on becoming stronger cardiovascular-wise. So far, I've lost 25 lbs, but I have another 20 lbs to lose. I'm just hoping to be able to stay active in addition to school because I know regular exercise will help with stress and peace of mind. :-)

Im trying to do the same thing

I'm working on it too!! I joined my local women's soccer league and have started taking classes at the gym. I'm used to sitting on my bum with my textbooks and snacks... It hasn't worked well for me haha! So I'm hoping to drop some weight before I start back in September and there also my Dominican trip in 3 weeks. I haven't even looked at calorie counting yet, I figure exercising is my first baby step. I'm trying to be conscious of what I eat without making two major changes at the same time and risk being overwhelmed. Good luck everyone!

I'm on the same craze! I plan to start Miami Dade's program in August. I love to workout, but I know that I usually choose sleep over a workout when I have to study a lot. I'm currently doing the 60 day Insanity work out (it is INSANE) and trying to eat more vegetables. I hope everyone can get the weight off and keep [some of] it off throughout school! Good luck and congrats to all of you who have already lost so much weight!

Counting my calories and paying more attention to food labels is the best thing that I have ever done for my health. Before, I had no idea how much junk I was putting into my body. Even if you're exercising everyday, it still won't make a difference if you are exceeding your intake. Running 1-2 miles only burns like 150-300 calories, depending on your weight, speed, incline, etc. That's barely a bowl of cereal! I highly recommend watching calories and your nutrition. You can do it--dig deep!!!! :)

I'm counting calories, gave up coffee for hot tea in the morning, and doing a mix of P90X and Turbo Jam throughout the summer. I need to lose about 7 pounds and I'll be happy. I'm also quitting smoking and I'm worried about the pounds I'll gain there.

Absolutely! I need to lose 15-20lbs by the time school starts in September. Also, I have shaky hands, so I'm going to do strength training exercises with light weights, to get it under control! Also using The Firm to burn some serious calories, and help improve the ole cardiovascular system! Finally, I have replaced soda with lemon, mint and cucumber water to cleanse (found out about this on AN!!). Good luck to you all, especially in school!

Love this thread! I especially liked the comment about feeling old and being 30, lol. I'm right there with ya. I'm 38 and feel like I'm 50 sometimes. I have some ligament and pain issues that I feel are attributed to my weight and would like to be able to get off my NSAID. The physical demands of nursing scares me at times so I'd love to get fit and lose some weight.

Hi, I am 20 pounds overweight and will be in nursing program Aug. Is there any advice from former nursing students who kept weight off during nursing program and continued to exercise regularly. It seems impossible?

Is anyone studying before nursing school this summer and if so what?
