Hello all, I am an RN with 10 years experience, been applying for 2-3 weeks now. I have had one interview, they checked references. A week later, no reply. Talked with HR at two other places, they say they will get back to me....
Are they just so busy and overwhelmed that they can't get their *** together to hire folks? I have never (not since I was a new grad) had such a hard time getting hired! I have even been talking with agencies. 3 out of 4 haven't even followed up.
I have excellent references, tons of experience. Left my last place on good terms. This makes NO *** sense. I took a leave of absence from school to join the covid response, and I am still sitting here on my *** waiting to get to work.
I have to assume HR is just drowning right now...??

Not only is HR drowning, in most places they aren't even on the premises and are trying to work from home. Nurse managers, who make the final decisions, have more than enough on their plates. Quite frankly, 2-3 weeks of applying is nothing compared to what others have been through in recent times- and that was even before COVID hit hard.
Thank you, that's really good to know and confirms what I was thinking is happening. It's kind of ironic and too bad; when they need help the most, it's hardest to get folks on-boarded. Put me in coach, I'm ready!

I think you might have better luck going through a travel nursing agency if you're willing to temporarily relocate. I'm not looking for work, but I have a LinkedIn profile and I keep getting messages from recruiters looking for RNs to start immediately in hard-hit areas like NYC and Detroit.

I was offered a job right before the HR rep was transitioned to work from home. The onboarding has her spinning around in circles. We have not been able to get a date I can start because she has no idea how to get it all done.
I've applied for other jobs and heard nothing.
It's just bonkers.
WOW!. What a mess. Maybe I should not have taken leave from school after all... I have until tomorrow to change my mind ?

If you’re willing, try nursing homes. I just got hired at a nursing home in a newly created COVID isolation unit. I’ve been out of clinical practice for 10 years! I got called on Thursday. Orienting in Friday. Starting ASAP. And the rate is insane.

I have seen some same day turn around stuff but its typically covid specific and crisis oriented--like may be temporary.
A regular FT job unrelated to this may take time due to the priority being on the pandemic staffing.
Also, may be area specfic. I'm in New York and if you still have a pulse and a nursing licence they know about you and are hitting you up

I'm a recent RN-BSN nurse and I've been off the Medical Surgical floor for two years. I've been told my travel agencies that I need to work in the hospital for at least a year. ARgh.

I think some places are under hiring freezes. (No surgeries = significantly reduced funding). I suppose it's all location based too.

Skydancer,
I'm having this exact same problem! I finally found a contract ICU job in NYC after nearly two weeks of looking. Problem is now they were real quick to get me to sign the contract, but it's been a week and still nothing. They told me this was a rapid response contract. When I spoke to the hospital admin for the interview they told me it was for immediate start. :( I'm also feeling so annoyed and useless. I'm dying to get in there and help out.
