I started this week- EEK! It's mostly been the orientation stuff, but we did go down to ambulatory surgery and practice IV's for a few hours. Next week I start on the floor with my preceptor. So much information!!

Yes and I cant say it was a very good week. First day I was on the unit the Manager, my preceptor, and my clinical educator were ALL OUT. No one called me so I came in and no one on the unit knew what to do with me...a call to the manager went in and she apologized and told me to go home....I was NOT TOO HAPPY about that lol.
2nd day I spent doing competencies and assessments. My preceptor is nice but is apparently having some personal ussues because she spent the bulk of the 12 hour shift on personal phone calls. I was left doing nothing a lot of the time. AGAIN the manager apologized....obviously it's been a bad week in the NICU and I happened to start during it.
The 3rd day they had me scheduled in the classrrom 1/2 the day and then back on the unit for the other 1/2. I get done with classroom and go to the unit to find that my precetoir AND manager are out AGAIN. Manager with the flu...preceptor who knows. So I shadowed the charge nurse who was mortified of the impression they have given me during this 1rst week. She kept apologizing over and over and over. Im pretty good with rolling with the punches so I just kept saying " its OK".
Next week I am on Tues-Thurs nights. It HAS to be better!
That stinks it started off kinda rocky, but at least the charge nurse was apologetic about it. Hopefully next week will be more organized so you can have a better week!
wow that sucks. 3 of my former classmates are starting on med/surg too, so we got to do all of the competencies and computer training together so that was actually fun. Plus, my brother-in-law passed away unexpectedly and they were great about me not coming in tomorrow and starting with my preceptor on Wednesday instead. I did some clinical rotations on this floor so at least I am somewhat familiar with things.

I started on Jan 14th with a week long orientation. I've been on the unit (NICU) for two shifts. The rest of the time is spent in class. I'm on the floor for 4 days in a row, starting Thursday. We do NRP next week and STABLE in the near future. I take my NCLEX in the morning. Busy, busy, busy few weeks.

yes--and while it is fun, it is also very, very overwhelming!
trying to relax but feel pretty freaked out! LOL!
This week so far...
Tues night I had 2 feeders and growers. One of them was on methadone protocol and was the cutest thing in the whole world but soooooooooo miserable. Barely able to stay asleep for 30 mins at a time. The other I got to drop a NG tube down to do a gavage feed. Tues was a good night
Wed night ( still here actually). Preceptor is out again. She has the flu. Charge nurse is actually agency? They gave me no one to work with and told me to do computer stuff...for 12 hours? I did 4 hours before my eyes crossed. I have since been wandering around lending a hand to those that need it and watching procedures...we have 29 wk quads so that has been interesting to observe.
Tomorrow is my last day this week. I hope my preceptor comes back. I am tentatively scheduled to have 3 babies with her.

This is my almost fourth week at my job. The first three were filled with a week long central nursing orientation, week after that was NCLEX review classes that they paid for, and the next week was computer classes (and my NCLEX which I passed!!!! Yay! :w00t:) This past weekend was my first time actually being on the floor and it was crazy!!!
My preceptor and I were both suppose to be "out of the numbers" so we could discuss the time line of patients and begin doing IV's, central line dressing changes etc, but the acuity of patients on the floor called for more one-on-ones than possible so I've gotten to get my hands right in there and start learning. I love it! I've gone home each day thinking about what has happened and how awesome everything that is being done up on the unit is. :)
Yesterday was my first day on the floor. It's going to be an adjustment for sure!! I got to help with a few things I never did in school- hang blood, trach care, suctioning, admission. It's alot! Today I work a different shift so that will be a change too. It's scary yet exciting LOL!
