I started this week- EEK! It's mostly been the orientation stuff, but we did go down to ambulatory surgery and practice IV's for a few hours. Next week I start on the floor with my preceptor. So much information!!
Well tonight I was sick....argh.
I did go in because I slept past the " call in" time but they sent me home anyway.
Both my older son and myself have fevers, aches, cough......influenza is my guess because that is what my preceptor has been out with and it's going around the unit.
I felt bad = my 4th shift and I already have to take off.....but I guess when you are sick you are sick...and I am NOT getting my babies sick!
I started my job the first week of the year. I had 1 week of the hospital system orientation, 1 week at the general hospital campus orientation, and 2 weeks of classes for the NICU. It was so miserable because it was like 7-8 hours a day, 5 days a week of just sitting for a whole month. Luckily, I start on the floor with my preceptor this week. Can't wait!!

sounds brutal... but i think mines will be worse. i start 2/11 and have 2 days of hospital oreintation, 2 days of nursing orientation, 1 day of computer training, critical care course, basic dysrhymia course. i will be in class 4days/week 8hrs a day until april. i will be spending everyother friday on my unit until my classroom orientation is over... i think. sigh.... nursing school all over again
Im so jealous!!! I'm still waiting to hear back from one of my interviews.GOOD LUCK to everyone!!:w00t:
Just thought I would post that yesterday I got a call from the nurse recruiter offering me both jobs that I interviewed for. I took the night shift at the Spine Center. I start the 25th. Can't wait!! Next jump is passing boards on March 4th. :w00t:
I started on Jan 14th with 2 wks of classroom & computer training. I'm into my 2nd wk on 2nd shift & then I'm on 1st shift for 2 wks, then I get to go to 3rd which is the shift I was hired for. So far it's been great, everyone has been very helpful & they always come & seek me out so I get experience with different procedures which is great! My preceptor is awesome & so is everyone else, they all help each other out & no one is too busy to answer a question. I've admin meds, assess pts, IV starts, huber needle change, admin blood, discharge, admit, drsg changes, ostomy appliance changes, foley insertion, and my busiest pt was on TPN/lipids -PCA -IV antibiotics. So far it's going great and hopefully tomorrow I'll pass the NCLEX & I can have that behind me.
I started working where I work on a med/surg ICU floor in Aug 07, but now I am in my grad nurse role on the same floor. I went to orientation for four days and then I just worked on the floor until my internship officially started on Jan 22nd. My preceptor is the best and so are all the other staff. I have had one patient by myslef for the past few weeks, but of course my preceptor is there to answer questions. It's a 12 month program and we do rotations through every department-- surgery, cath lab, pharmacy, radiology, PICC team, wound/ostomy, telemetry, lab, respiratory, we even rotate with the pulmonologist! I think this has really helped me appreciate the other departments and see what is available for me to use.
I just finished an EKG class, but we also have IABP, ACLS, PALS, and trauma certifications. We also rotate through classes based on the body systems, so when we go through the pulmonary module ( an actual module with a test we have to pass at 80%) we take care of a patient on the vent or with an ETT or someone who had resp failure and then do a rotation with the respiratory therapist.
I think this program is going to be great even though I am in school for another year!

I had the craziest night last night. My preceptor was out AGAIN ( this is becoming routine) but they paired me with another nurse who was AWESOME and showed me soooo much!
I placed 4 NG tubes ( 3 in the same baby because she was a little artist and kept yanking them out)
Went to the OR to observe *3* C-Sections and what we do there
Collected blood for labs
Did chem strips
Did PO and gavage feeds
Talked on the phone with parents
Learned all about bubble CPAP
Watched as they had to place one of the quads on an oscillator.
It was busy and I ran my butt off....but the funny thing is that I was basically doing "easy" stuff and I was mad busy......I cant wait until I can get my skills up to speed.
