SweetBabyLPN, you are incorrect. You do pay an enrollment fee with Excelsior, but the rest of the exams are pay-as-you-go. The degree is not a sham at all ... I an many others here who are EC grads are living proof of that.

well, i know multiple people who have gone to excelsior (one who graduated), and they all say it's a sham! i've looked into it myself and have come to the same conclusion.

for one, once you register, you have to pay the full tuition, whether you complete it or not. of course everyone has intentions of completing, but things happen. i have a friend who registered, then finally got a call from her local cc (who would've thought, after being on the waiting list for three years!!). she had not taken or even registered for a single class, all she had done was enroll in the school. she was told that she would still be responsible for the full $9,500 in tuition. fortunately, her mother is also an lpn looking to transition and was willing to take that load off of her back.

i know several other people who have gone through the program at the speed of light, only to wait six months for placement in clinicals. they usually had to fly out to another state for clinicals and only got 3 days worth before receiving a passing or failing grade. needless to say, most of them fail.

now i'm not looking for a sure shot, but i would need to feel much more stable and a better sense of organization as well as preparedness from a program after shelling out so much dough to do a bridge. i'm definitely not saying it can't be done, just saying i would prefer to do it differently.

just my :twocents:!

i'm pretty sure she signed up for excelsior, but maybe i didn't get the full story on why they wouldn't reimburse her. either way though, she didn't register for any classes, but (for one reason or another) was told that she would have to cough up the full cost of tuition as though she'd completed the entire program.

btw, if you read my post, you'll see that i never said it was easy. as a matter of fact i (intentionally) implied that it was unreasonably difficult by saying that (according to my information) most people fail clinicals. i feel that 3 days is a joke! not enough time to pass or fail someone. now with that said, i will admit that i had no idea that you prep for it for months prior. i kind of thought they just dumped ya'll there and gave you 3 days to prove yourself. that's why i felt it was lacking in preparation.

i really wasn't trying to offend any excelsior alumni and i apologize if i did. those of you "who attend and graduate from excelsior are proud", as well you should be. you accomplished something major that many others attempt and fail. like i said, i'm not saying it can't be done, just that i would do it differently.

like someone else's mentioned, your friend probably signed a contract with a publishing company, such as the college network, rue, etc..who supply students with books. plus this student will still pay the excelsior fees. you do not have to use these companies because you can go straight to excelsior and buy your own books and study guides but if you signed the contract with these outside companies, then you have to pay them whether you finish or not.. i paid excelsior i think total of $3500 for the whole program and my job reimbursed it. i finished in less than a year and i learned so much from this program. you have to be a dedicated person to do this because it is self pace and you learn on your own. no teachers to spoon feed you.

agldragonRN, like I said, maybe I didn't get the full story on why she wasn't reimbursed. And I already said that those of you who went to Excelsior should be proud because I believe it is difficult. (Even though I don't believe people expect to be spoon fed by their instructors).

To everyone who continues to comment, I don't understand why I'm still getting responses based off of my first post bashing Excelsior when I pretty much recanted what I said and apologized for offending you all.

I'm not a closed minded person, I am capable of changing my mind upon receipt of new information as well as admitting when I'm wrong if I am. If what you all say is true, then I'm wrong. I was basing my opinion on the experiences of people I know personally who have dealt with Excelsior, along with my own (admittedly) limited experience with them. Maybe I'll take another look. . .

I dunno ... maybe because "sham" is a strong word, and leaves a bad taste in our collective EC-grad/student mouth. ;) We've suffered many, many drive-by EC-bashers in this forum, and it's not fun. I'm glad you're open to new/correct information -- thank you for your open mind. :) See, we're not a bad bunch ... :D

sigh. . . . nurses :uhoh3:

I enjoyed reading this...;).

Hi ericka, I'm glad to hear you finished. How long did it take you? And how much did you spend? Do they find a place for you to do your clinicals at?

It took me about a year, I finished my nursing courses in 4 months, and then I went for my CPNE . Failed the first time, just went back in November and passed. It is a great program, you get out what you put in.

Oh boy! lol I am looking into Excelsior College. Is anyone from the Pennsylvania area, more towards Philadelphia that did their clinicals? I went on the Excelsior bulletin and I never noticed anything about clinical hours...etc. If anyone has anything about clinicals in my area, please let me know how it went. thanks!
