I'm an LPN and I say if you can afford to do the BSN AND have support while doing so. . . GO FOR IT!! Absolutely! My circumstances didn't allow me that option but if I could've, I would've. I enjoy being an LPN and I make a very good income but one thing I can tell you through experience is that once you are an LPN, you're not likely to get your BSN as quickly as you would be if you had just gotten it over with from the beginning. Especially since you will have a young child by the time you start working, you'll likely enjoy the income and decide to do "just a couple of things" (financially) that you may not have been able to do before and next thing you know, you have a car notE, and credit card bills to pay down, etc. So you say, "OK, I'm just going to work some extra shifts to pay off these bills and then I'll enroll in the fall". This can be a very viscious cycle! Lol. That's not to say it will happen to you, but you run that risk so it's best to do it while you can and you have the economical and moral support of your family. I understand that you want to be around for your child as much as possible but it's best to complete your schooling while he's young so that you can be around when he'll really need you and notice your absence (assuming you don't continue with the BSN immediately following graduation). I also understand that you don't want to be a burden to your mother but if she is willing to help you in this capacity then it's because she wants you to do what's best for you and the baby and it would be wise to take advantage of that opportunity (not many people have this as an option). This is just my opinion of course. Only you know whats best for you. Good luck making your decision!

WOW!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! It's an amazing feeling isn't it?! Hopefully That'll be me in a coupla' semesters! Sigh. . . Jealous! LOL! Luckily, you already know all the ups and downs nursing school comes with so you can prepare for that. Stay focused, and good luck in school and on NCLEX! I'm happy for you! :hug:

IDK. I guess maybe i'm so opposed to it because the idea is just foreign to me. I've never really heard of this practice, let alone seen it and I don't (personally) know anyone who has. Maybe it's a hospital practice? (I work sub-acute). Either way I wish the OP the best.

Well, I think that's really dependant upon location, facility and/or union (or lack thereof) membership. Of course if you live in a 'right to work state', then Yes, you absolutely would run the risk of getting fired. I'm just saying that everyone else on this board is not you, so just because that's their situation doesn't mean that it applies to you. Nevertheless, in this economy, who can afford to risk their job when there's an anxious new grad standing behind you ready to pounce on it right? Even if it costs you your back. With that said, if you can't dispute/challenge it, then don't stress it. Save your energy. Especially if you're gonna' need it to lift those heavy patients! I hope it works out for you. Good Luck!

I didn't miss it. Just didn't see the point in adressing it since if that LPN was anything like this LPN, she refused the assignment. They try to get over on who they think will let them get away with it and in this case, the OP was their sucker. Sorry OP, but they did play you. Like I said, as long as you haven't accepted an assignment (i.e. get report, count narcs, etc.) you are not OBLIGATED to take it, and can refuse. How your facility handles that however is up to them. I know where I work, they would never try to pull that on me and if they did, I would refuse. I'm pretty sure that after standing my ground, they would run scrambling to find someone else to ask. But that's me.

You have the right to downright REFUSE an assignment you don't feel comfortable with. Your Nurse Manager may not like it, but that is your right. Next time, when you express your discomfort with an assignment and explain why and she just says "what do you want me to do?", answer "give me a different assignment. As I said, I don't feel comfortable with this one.". Now with that said, I as a nurse wouldn't be willing to work as a CNA at a place where I was hired as a nurse. If they are short on aides, they need to hire more. I have nothing against CNA's and don't think I am above them in any way. I am always willing to help CNA's while at work and even perform "CNA duties" when one is unavailable. My mother is a CNA and I KNOW I'm not better than her. Sounds like they're trying to punish you for filing that grievance. If I were you, I would DEFINITELY get my union rep involved but I would also start looking for a new job ASAP! There is not much your union would be able to do unless those incidents were fabricated (which you admit they are not), but at least this sends them the message that you will not be bullied. Anyway, if those incidents are in fact all minor as you say, then probably nothing will come of it from the BON. Good Luck

If you really need the income, I would take it in the meantime just to have a source of income, but still keep job hunting. While you are there, if you feel like some of their practices could put your license in jeapordy, then hey, you could always resign. If you're there for a short time, you don't even need to put them on your resume. As far as them having a bad reputation, you can only be the best nurse YOU can be. If it's that bad, you can cite it as your reason for leaving on applications. I know they say you shouldn't say anything negative about your previous jobs but I would say something like "I always try to practice as safely as possible and so I felt it was best for me to be in an environment where I was better equipped to do so". That's just me though. I take no prisoners. On the other hand, if income is not a concern and you're not DESPERATE for a job, then I probably wouldn't take it.

Not necessarily, because the orange you pulled could have still been part of the mixed box and you just happened to have pulled an orange as opposed to an apple. Assuming however that the orange is from the mixed box, the box labeled orange could be mixed and the box labled apple could be oranges, and vice versa. It can go either way!

EEESH!! I think if you answered that way, they would find you to be indecisive and not hire you!! Lol!! I had an interview the other day where I was asked what my worst quality/weakness was and I had a really hard time answering. She had to help me along quite a bit, which made me feel like I was coming off as conceited or overly confident in my abilities.
