I'm just curious! I'm just starting (at the ripe 'ol age of 35, LOL!) looking into a career in nursing. I've worked in hospitals and clinics doing medical transcription for years and years, and way back when used to be a pre-physical therapy major (I've taken chemistry, anatomy, biology...don't know if they would count, as it's been several years). I would be attending MJC for pre-reqs and (fiingers crossed) the nursing program eventually and I would really love to have a student's view, how difficult it is to get into the program, any general advice, etc.
Hi jjhc2006,
I applied for fall 09 and did not get in. I applied for spring 2010 and hopefully I will get in, it is my fourth time applying. Have you applied? and how many times if you have? The director of the nursing program told me that they have not had anyone wait more than 5 times so I guess I will at least get in for fall 2010:specs:
I applied as well for Fall '09 and didn't make it in. It was my first time applying. Now I have my application in for Spring '10 and am not expecting to get accepted. Although, when I visited the campus in August to turn in my application, I met a gal who worked in the bookstore who made it in on her 2nd try so you never know! It would actually work out better for me if I got in for Fall '10 due to childcare difficulties, but will take what I can get! Good luck to you! I am SURE you will make it in for the Spring! Please let me know when you find out!
It's all about the luck of the draw.....my friend and I applied together the first time and she got in on the first try and is over half way done and I'm still waiting:o:o I was a wee bit jealous but I was very happy for her:D I will let ya know....I think we are suppose to hear something by dec. 10th.
What a bummer about you and your friend. On the up side, she is going to be a wealth of knowledge for you to tap into! Everyone in class is going to wish that they had a friend to turn to. I have been trying to find someone in the program who will allow me to see or make a copy of the MJC student nursing manual. I saw on the MJC website, that they get tested on the manual after a week into the start of the program. I'll bet your friend can get you a copy so you can start learning the pertinent things in the manual.
Again, please let me know when you hear from the program. So excited for you!
That would be awesome!!!! I would be happy to reimburse you for a copy. Let me know! Have you checked out the details for each semester? They have it available online at the nursing website. I was able to print up the common medical abbreviations, prefixes, and suffixes that they test the students on each week. I started memorizing them about a month ago because there are about 15 pages or so. They have a math practice test with answers available online as well. I am taking statistics this semester so I haven't been able to muster up the strength to go over their math review for dosaging, but will as soon as I am done with my class.
Well, please let me know if you get ahold of the manual. Again, I will be glad to pay you for the copy fee. I appreciate you looking into that!
That is too bad about the handbook! Guess it means we will have to bust our rears like everyone else . Thanks so much for trying though! I too am dying to find out if I made it in! I know this sounds crazy, but I am hoping for just one more semester before I make it in so I can finish my last general ed class for my BSN. Also, my husband might be getting a promotion in Fresno which would mean that I would have to move there and start all over in the lottery at Fresno Community College or do the merit based thing at Fresno State University. How frustrating would that be! :grn:
Keep in touch and let me know if you make it in! Can't wait to hear from ya!
Mammato3,
Wow! I am absolutely shocked that after four times applying, you didn't make it in?! I just assmumed you did. So sorry:( We are waiting to hear this week if we are moving to Fresno or not. I spoke with both Fresno State and Fresno Community and they both said the only class I need in order to get into their program is a chem class which I was already planning on taking this Spring. Where are you taking Math 90? I am assuming MJC. I took its equivalent last semester online at Delta and loved it! The instructor I had gives you three chances for every test including the final, and keeps your best score. On top of that, his tests aren't timed which makes it easy if you have kids like I do that distract you during a test. This morning I just took my final for statistics and got an "A" (YAY!). I took it from Delta as well and it was super easy. Never had to meet with either teacher for the entire semester.
Let me know how things are going with you and I am crossing my fingers that you make it in the program in the fall!

I was wondering if any of you who applied for Fall '09 made it in?
