Modesto Junior College ADN program
Congrats to all of you that got in! I have a question for all of you that have applied before...I've applied in the past, took and passed the entrance exam, etc., but still need to take math 90 to meet the new requirement. That's my question, actually. I just want to make sure that that's, in fact, the case. It just seems so illogical that the math 90 requirement would apply to previous applicants who have passed the entrance exam, especially since they aren't requiring a re-take of the entrance exam that would cover math at that level. I've asked a counselor about it and at first she wasn't sure, then said yes, it was required. I just want to make sure, since she seemed uncertain herself. Thanks for any advice! We'll all get in eventually :) I'd love to hear the experiences of those of you who got in!

Anyone going to Modesto Junior College?
EROSE22, I had most of my prereqs done, too. I had done chemistry, biology, anatomy and a lot of other college units done 10 or so years ago. All I had to do at MJC was micro and physiology. The only warning I've heard about trying to take too much at one time or taking fast-paced summer classes is to make sure you can handle it so you do well. I took anatomy and chemistry at the same time (while working full time) -- big mistake! I did okay, but not as well as I would have liked. It isn't easy to get classes, especially if you registration date isn't early. Go to classes and try to get added. Good luck! JMoney: More questions if you don't mind :) How long are the clinical days? Also, is there anything you would recommend someone waiting around until they get into the program do to help prepare -- read something in particular perhaps? I got a book about medical math (an older edition of Calculate with Confidence), hoping to get a head start on learning some of that. I see people on the boards here talk about dosage calculation tests that they have to get 100% on or get kicked out of the program (I understand why, but yikes!). Does MJC do that? And if they do, are they good about helping you prepare for such a high stakes test?

JMoney, another question: How long are the school and clinical days? Thanks :)

Anyone going to Modesto Junior College?
Thank you again, JMoney! This information is gold to me :) I really appreciate you sharing your experiences with us! I work for Sutter Gould as a medical transcriptionist. I work from home and have a very flexible schedule, so hopefully I can keep working at least part time.

I decided to PM my answer to F4Mom instead :)

Anyone going to Modesto Junior College?
Thank you so much JMoney!!! It really helps those of us getting started to learn a little about what we're getting into :) All my prereqs are done and my app is in for spring semester. A lady that was in my physiology class is an LVN in OB at Emmanuel and she always said she worked with a wonderful group of people -- hopefully you'll have a great experience there (despite the drive!)

Anyone going to Modesto Junior College?
Hi there, F4mom. My question was from a long time ago -- I had some life circumstances that kept me away from school for a couple of semesters -- but I'm done with my prereqs, passed the TEAS test, so my application is in for Spring semester. MJC does a lottery out of qualified students -- your name goes in the pool once the first time you apply, then twice the second time you apply. I've heard (not sure how accurate) that it doesn't usually take more than three times before you get in. The MJC program is supposed to be really good. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll try my best to answer them :)

**Long Sigh**
Some schools don't allow you to take classes over in which you recieve a C (which I just don't understand!!). I hope yours does. Best of luck to you!

How long are science classes valid?
At my school, it doesn't matter how long ago you took the courses. Big sigh of relief from me, since I took a few of my science classes almost 10 years ago!

Does anyone do Medical Transcription?
I've been an MT for nearly 10 years. I work at home for a large clinic and in the past worked at home for a hospital. My husband also does transcription and he took the M-TEC course -- I do feel they prepare you well to work. It' is very difficult to find a job without any experience, but once you find someone who is willing to hire you for that first job, you wouldn't have any problems whatsoever finding work. My job is (right now) perfect for me, since I work at home and have flexible hours, good benefits and pay. Good luck!

Nursing and keeping fit??
Hello there! Well, I don't know how people do it with a nursing job, but as a busy pre-nursing student/full time worker I run or do other workouts whenever I can fit it in. It's a priority to me, so I do plan ahead, but have a plan B (and C and D!) just in case. Meal-wise, I've heard a lot of nurses have to delay meals. Maybe some nutritional supplements, like protein bars, would help if you are trying to time your meals in certain intervals?

I want to take Micro and Physiology..
Too much? I work as a medical transcriptionist, so I'm really good at the terminology. I purchased a physiology and micro book and have been studying a lot. If I take classes from 4 to 8:30 Mon - Thurs (lab included), I can take both, but I work full time, flexible hours. Does this seem unreasonable? Once I take these two classes, I can apply to the nursing program and start getting my name in (if I don't get selected, my name goes in extra for the lottery each time I apply as a qualified student). Thanks for any advice!

Took pre-reqs 12 years ago
I took some of my prereqs about 10 years ago and the nursing program counselor at the school I'm going to (Modesto Junior College) said they were still good. (Whew!) Good luck to you.

what if you have to work while in nursing school?
I'm so glad someone posted this question! I work full time from home as a medical transcriptionist. I'm hoping I can go part-time or quit when I finally get into NS, but if I can't do that, it's good to know that it is possible (though I understand very difficult...) to do both. Fortunately, I have very flexible hours in my job, so maybe I can make it work. Thanks for sharing your experiences and tips.

Can I take my prereq's online? Where?
This sounds like a great option! Has anyone had trouble getting their Edukan units accepted at their local college?
