Anyone going to Modesto Junior College?

I'm just curious! I'm just starting (at the ripe 'ol age of 35, LOL!) looking into a career in nursing. I've worked in hospitals and clinics doing medical transcription for years and years, and way back when used to be a pre-physical therapy major (I've taken chemistry, anatomy, biology...don't know if they would count, as it's been several years). I would be attending MJC for pre-reqs and (fiingers crossed) the nursing program eventually and I would really love to have a student's view, how difficult it is to get into the program, any general advice, etc.

Thanks guys! It is so good to know that there are other moms out there who understand! I only have a little over a year to wait and just enough time to get my BS prerequisites finished. God bless you guys!

JMoney,

Thank you so much for the invaluable information you have given to all of us who are persuing a spot at MJC. I have a question for you since you just finished your second semester. I noticed that there are two different start times for the lecture portion of the second semester. Do we get a choice in which time works best for us, or is it chosen for us? As a mom, I would prefer to have an earlier start time, so I can pick my kids up from school myself. Thanks in advance for your response!

Sorry to jump right into this conversation, but wanted to give you mother's some information. If you apply to the MJC nursing program and get accepted in, I was told by one of the counselors that you can request to "defer" your enrollment to the next semester or longer if you have a valid reason. I have already been passed up twice and was told some applicants are on their 5 time applying (again, told this by a counselor) so you may not want to wait too long. Plus, I just read that beginning 2010 they are only accepting applications once per year for both semesters. So I'm not sure if that helps those of us waiting or hurts us......Good luck though. :)

Thanks! I actually spoke with MJC yesterday and discovered that 9 students were dropped from doing clinicals this semester due to lack of funding. And...that there is a possibility that they may have to cut half (30) of the students that they are accepting into the program. I was told that this is a long shot, but a possibility. Also, it was suggested to me to go ahead and apply in February. If I get in sooner than I am wanting, I was told that if you decline, your name still gets included in the lottery an additional time the next time around. Also, as you stated, starting May 2010, applications will only be accepted once a year. Something to think about!

Have any of you heard anything about a nursing job shortage? That too was mentioned to me from someone in the MJC nursing dept. Up until yesterday, all I have ever heard is of a nursing shortage, not a job shortage!!! What are we getting ourselves in to!!!!

Hi JMoney,

I am currently in the 2nd semester program. Can you please tell me about the clinicals for 3rd semester mainly which instructors are on which days and hospital?

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows how the waitlist works. How many of the waitlisted applicants actually get in?

Thanks:)

Hey 209girl,

I'm not sure how many they actually take, I think it depends on how many students decline their spot. Did you apply for fall 09? I did and I didnt get in. If you did apply, did they give you a waitlist #?

Hey Mammato3,

Ya i applied for Fall 09 and my letter stated that I was number 24 on the wait list. What wait list number were you? I noticed that their website says that 57 applicants are picked for fall but i thought it was 75 or something.

Hey 209girl,

I talked to allied health today and they told me that they only gave out waitlist #'s to the first 25. They felt it was discouraging to the students to give them waitlist #'s in the 400 range. So apparently I was not one of the first 25 cuz I didn't get a waitlist # at all.:cry: I believe they lowered the amount of accepted applicants last spring because of the economy. They used to take 75 or so.

Hi Mammato3,

Thanks for the info! Even though I got a wait list number I doubt they'll go that far down the list:o. I wonder how many they took from the wait list last semester. I feel that I should stay positive, but I don't want to get my hopes up ya know. Well good luck with everything. :)

209girl,

Ya never know....just stay positive. I work with someone who is #22 on the waitlist. I hope you both get in:D Good luck:monkeydance:

Thanks, I hope we both get in too:) If you don't mind me asking where do you work? I noticed that it says you're a CNA. I have my CNA certificate but never found a job:(
