I'm just curious! I'm just starting (at the ripe 'ol age of 35, LOL!) looking into a career in nursing. I've worked in hospitals and clinics doing medical transcription for years and years, and way back when used to be a pre-physical therapy major (I've taken chemistry, anatomy, biology...don't know if they would count, as it's been several years). I would be attending MJC for pre-reqs and (fiingers crossed) the nursing program eventually and I would really love to have a student's view, how difficult it is to get into the program, any general advice, etc.
Hi Lori; I wish you the best in your move back to Mo-town. I'm not sure about the LN-RN program through MJC. Have you called and asked them? They have been great with me about questions. They can probably tell you the application load to give you an idea. Another idea; have you tried the LVN thread thru allnurses.com. That might give you a broader audience.
Best of Luck to you!
Deborah
Thanks!
I dont post much so no I didnt try that. I have called and they have never been friendly to me. This time I was told that they had no idea how many apps they had each semester and couldn't help me at all. O well I'll just apply in Feb. If I dont get in then I can go up to Sac. I spoke to them and they said just about everyone gets in in their program.
Thanks for your responce.

Hello,Sorry to but into you conversation but I have a question about MJC for anyone who knows...
I am an LVN in WA (originally from modesto) we are moving back in a month. I noticed that CA dosent really hire LVNs anymore and I need to get my RN. Does anyone know how hard it is to get into the LVN-RN at MJC???
Thanks,
Lori
I'm in my 40's by the time I completed all of my prereqs for the ADN program however, my counselor suggested that I go through the MJC LVN program instead of the usual application process due to the long wait. I was able to get into the LVN upgrade class right after I got my license and luckily, got accepted into the MJC ADN program the 1st time I applied. Because I already went through 18 months of the LVN program and I had my license, I only had to do the 3rd and 4th semester of the ADN program. I am happy to say that I recently graduated from my ADN program and will begin working at Memorial Medical Center as a CNR next month.
My suggestion to R.odriguez is to make an appointment w/ a counselor at the Allied Health to go over your transcript and as soon as you know that you have completed all of the graduation requirements, sign up for the LVN upgrade class. Leanne Bartels teaches the upgrade class and she is also the 3rd semester director so she will be one of the instructors that will make a decision on whether you get into the program or not. Good luck!
I apologize for coming in on your discussion, but I could use some advice from one or all of you. I am a mother of two and I just finished my prerequisites for MJC. I am now focusing on the three remaining classes that I will need for prerequisites for a direct transfer into the Stan State program once I finish at MJC. My question is should I wait to apply to the program until my youngest is in school all day (he will be in 1st grade in a year and a half), or should I apply now. I don't want to get into the program before the youngest is in first grade because he is my last baby and I want to be able to work in his kindergarten class this coming fall. Also, I want to rely on family as little as possible for childcare when I am in the program and if I were to get in for Fall 2009, my in-laws would be picking him up 3+ times a week. Chances are slim that I will make it in on my first or even second try, but knowing my luck I would get right in. I am lucky enough not to be in any hurry to get into nursing school as I do not have to work. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much for this post, I am also going to be at MJC and I am very nervous about getting into the program. I'm trying not to worry about that as I have a lot of time to wait before applying, but everybody I talk to is going into nursing. The program is impacted for sure. I guess though we are lucky geographically, there is stan state, Delta, and bay area colleges too.
I could not help but to jump in and reply to your comment. I see that you are debating on going through school now or waiting until your youngest is a little older. Well it is a personal choice but my advice as a mother of 4 is if you don't have to work then I would wait. School is not going any where but your children are. They grow up way to fast to miss those important times in there lives that you just can't get back. Sometimes it is hard to wait. I want a career for my self something that is my own and represents me and being a mom is a very giving job but it is the best paying job ever. Our family has given up certain things in life for now so I can stay home with the kids and my last one is in kindergarten now and I still don't know if the time is right for me personally to go back to school yet. I help a lot in class and fieldtrips then there are sports if they are involved with that. The list goes on but for me personally I did not want to miss out on any precious memories that you can never get back so I decided to wait a little longer. School is not going any where but your kids are. They grow up too fast. Good luck on your decision.
Thanks lovetospa! I appreciate your advice so very much! I absolutely love being a stay-at-home mom and wouldn't trade the last 8 years of my life for anything! I think I am going to hold off applying until next year and then see what happens. Like I said, I have a few more classes to complete for Stan State prerequisites so I think that will keep me busy enough. I think the reason why everyone is pushing me to apply now is because they all "know" I won't get in right away and if I start applying now, I will be able to get in when I want to. But...what if I get in sooner? My child's kindergarten year is not something that I am willing to give up. I really enjoy working in my oldest's class and I think it is important for children to see their parents making the time to help them and their friends learn at school!
Thanks again for the advice!
Thank you lovetospa and jhanks for sharing....
I am in the same situation. I have a 3yr old and 6yr old and have been battling the decision demons. http://images.allnurses.com/smilies/added/no.gif
My 3yr old will not start K for another 2 years and even then it will be 1/2 days. I can apply in Spring'10, but am really considering waiting. Guess I have the rest of my life to get started. My plan has become finishing out with Physiology and then finish up whatever prereq's I might need to transfer to Stan State if I decide to go that route~if getting into the ADN @MJC becomes too difficult. My second backup plan is computer science - which I'm finding I'm enjoying....
It's good to know have similiar thoughts/decisions....
Thanks again.
