I'm just curious! I'm just starting (at the ripe 'ol age of 35, LOL!) looking into a career in nursing. I've worked in hospitals and clinics doing medical transcription for years and years, and way back when used to be a pre-physical therapy major (I've taken chemistry, anatomy, biology...don't know if they would count, as it's been several years). I would be attending MJC for pre-reqs and (fiingers crossed) the nursing program eventually and I would really love to have a student's view, how difficult it is to get into the program, any general advice, etc.
Hi Cbbb,
Thanks for the update. I went ahead a got my books anyway. Hopefully it won't be a problem with me using the old edition. I really don't want to spend a lot of money on the new book. I'm assuming they're going to the new med-surg assessment book which comes out in November, right? It's my experience that they usually don't change much between editions. I did buy a new dictionary and drug guide. Hope there aren't many more changes or I'll have to sell everything I have and rebuy
Is anyone at MJC using the 2-volume set of the Med-Surg Nursing: Assessment of Clinical problems book? I thought I ordered the 1 vol set, but the 2 vol set arrived in the mail. It looks like the book is just divided for convenience because the book is so honking big. I'd appreciate any advice you have on this.
Has anyone received their packet yet? Yes I know it's only the 2nd and we weren't suppost to get it till the 1st but what can I say I'm a bit crazy! Please post when you get you're packet so I can stop driving myself mad
! I keep having dreams that I didn't get accepted it was all in my head!!!!!
:lol2:
Yeah, they're not in a big hurry to get them out, so ya gotta find things to keep your mind occupied. I got most of my books and am purusing through them. I guess they will be changing up some books for the newer editions. I got the big MedSurg Assessment book. The first 10 chapters is common knowledge, then it gets into systems. It would be nice to know how they break up the reading, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a weekly class assignment.
Thanks ElBee I was too scared to contact anyone! At least now I can just expect them "soon".
apoppyfield I don't know how you can be so relaxed about it but I admire you for it. I think I'm just soooooooooo excited I let it get the best of me. I have gotten a few of the books and started studying the lists of pre fixes and stuff. I think after waiting for three years I'm just ready to start!!
Meeee, relaxed??? I'm just coping. haha. This long wait has been tortuous. I ran into one of the Columbia students this morning who said s(he) hasn't even had time to read the test taking book. I asked if the DVD was useful and s(he) hadn't even opened it up. That kinda makes me feel better. If we make good use of this time, we won't feel so out of control. Can't wait to meet you guys at orientation. We are going to be great!

Hi guys,
I am in my first semester now and it is intense. A couple people have already dropped. I have one set of scrubs for clinicals and it is fine. I ordered my books off amazon and they are exactly the same. Although our teacher said they are using the new edition next semester, so check on if they are the same on the website. I was working when I started the semester and had to stop because I had no time to do everything that is needed. But there are people that have 4-5 kids and are handling it fine. It's just up to you and how much you can handle. It is A LOT of work and is very demanding. Pharmacology is great and the teacher is wonderful. Don't stress too much on that. Just worry about the theory tests and how to answer NCLEX questions. Hope that helps!
