I'm just curious! I'm just starting (at the ripe 'ol age of 35, LOL!) looking into a career in nursing. I've worked in hospitals and clinics doing medical transcription for years and years, and way back when used to be a pre-physical therapy major (I've taken chemistry, anatomy, biology...don't know if they would count, as it's been several years). I would be attending MJC for pre-reqs and (fiingers crossed) the nursing program eventually and I would really love to have a student's view, how difficult it is to get into the program, any general advice, etc.
Hi everyone,
I thought I would let you guys know that I called the financial aid office at MJC yesterday and talked to the lady who is in charge of the nursing loans. She told me that they gave out 15 loans and that their funds are now depleted. They won't be giving out anymore nursing loans until 2012!! Does anyone know of any other loans that MJC has?
Hi 1DAYRN, Even if you have to borrow from your family, friends, or the bank... do it! You have won the educational lottery. I'm saving money by buying a lot of the books used online. Dealoz tells you who has the best deal. I just need someone in the program to tell me the ISBN numbers of the books in the Fundamentals of Nursing bundle, but I may just buy them off the list on the website. After the first semester, you may be able to work as an extern and then every semester, you will make more money. You can make it happen. By the way, I got my Dove uniforms this week. My friend in the fall semester said they were backordered 6-8 weeks, so I thought I better get on it. They fit perfectly if you follow their sizing instructions and they were long enough. That's one thing you can't save on, but you could get by with just one set. Two sets make it more convenient if you don't do laundry during the week. There is a stethoscope included in the materials fee, so you don't have that extra fee. If you start picking up little things now before January, it won't seem so overwhelming all at once. I compare this to the $6 grand I would have had to pay at CSU Stan for the first semester; what a bargain. Hang in there.
Thank you apoppyfield and Mammato3 for being so encouraging! apoppyfield you're right if I start buying stuff now it shouldn't be so bad. How did you get the information for the uniforms? Would you mind sharing? I won't give up because of financial problems or anything else for that matter. I've been poor my whole life so a few more years wont kill me! :) I'm going to follow you're advise and start buying things now! Would you mind sharing all the info you have for what we need so I can start shopping? I have tried to look it up but haven't had much luck. Thank you again for you're support! Mammato3 I'm right there with ya I will do anything to get through school! I think it will make it easier if we all stay this supportive of each other! Thank you!
It's on the MJC website that the uniforms must be purchased from Dove. I spoke to my friend who is in the second semester and she said that she could get by with one, but a lot of people bought two. We can only get navy pants or a white skirt and there's no way I'm wearing a skirt for clinicals. The top we have a choice of white or navy. I got one of each. It's nice for the convenience, if you have clinicals two days in a week to have the second one ready to go. The books are all listed on the website, but a word of caution that some might change before January. (but I really doubt it). I'm getting the recommended texts used, and I bought the older edition of the Test success book. So I got it for 0.01 and shipping instead of $25.00. What can really change that much in Test Success? Right? If you don't have a problem with tests, you probably don't even need it. Same for Nursing now: Today's issues, tomorrow's trends. I got the 4th instead of the 5th edition because I read that there are only very minor changes and I believe it's just an overview of nursing. Some reviews online say it's awful, but it's a required text. I'm holding off on the Fundamentals of nursing bundle until I'm sure there are no changes. If you buy it new from MJC, it's $395, but I think I can save $200 by buying used books which are listed individually on the MJC website. Those are the books in which we will be tested, mainly, so I want to have the current issue, and page numbers although I don't care if I get a used one. Anyway, I'm learning as I go and also bugging our very busy current students for info. I would really appreciate any input from students in their first semester if they've got a minute. Good luck!
Here's the website to the first semester program information. Also, do yourself a favor and start learning the abbreviations and previxes and suffixes. We will be tested on them during the first semester and if you already know them, it's one less thing.

1 day rn, check out the hrsa nursing scholarship. it may not be open now, but get on their list. they give priority to lower income nursing students.
Hi 'apoppyfield,'
I just wanted to introduce myself as your classmate for January's semester. Congratulations! It's great to get this support group started early! If you would like to exchange emails, you can send me a private message and I will respond to your address with my email. (I don't have enough postings to send you a private message yet.) Take care!

Does anyone going to MJC have a list of the ISBN numbers in the fundamentals of nursing package? The Pirates website doesn't list them out individually and I'd like to save money, if possible, buy buying used. I start in January, thanks
