I'm just curious! I'm just starting (at the ripe 'ol age of 35, LOL!) looking into a career in nursing. I've worked in hospitals and clinics doing medical transcription for years and years, and way back when used to be a pre-physical therapy major (I've taken chemistry, anatomy, biology...don't know if they would count, as it's been several years). I would be attending MJC for pre-reqs and (fiingers crossed) the nursing program eventually and I would really love to have a student's view, how difficult it is to get into the program, any general advice, etc.
Hey,
Has anyone purchased their book for the BLS class yet? Just thought I would let you know that Amazon has a bunch of used ones for pretty cheap. I ordered mine today for $10 that includes shipping. Our packets says that we have to have it and read it by the time the BLS class starts. Which BLS class did you guys sign up for? I chose the Jan. 4th one.
Mammato3,
Thanks for the BLS book info. I too signed up for the class on the 4th so I'll see you there! How are you doing on the check list? I still have to buy the uniform and books. Sounds like we are all going to be in the same boat about the uniforms not being ready until end of January/begining of February.
ElBee,
Great! I'll see you there too:) When I dropped off my intent paper, I told the front desk about the uniforms not being ready until then and she said that is cutting it too close, so I dont know if they are going to do anything about that. I dont have too much checked off my list. I have my physical appt. on Tuesday so I hope I can get a lot more done. I haven't done my drug test or my background check yet. With Christmas and three kids its hard to find the $$$ to do all of it. I wish they would give us our financial aid checks early:( How is your checklist coming?
For the BLS class I never even got the book out of my backpack. They say you NEED it to take the class but they never even mentioned it when we were there. They teach you about CPR and take a little quiz at the end that is pretty simple. So basically, that book was a waste of money. Obviously it has some good info but if you are on a budget I honestly wouldn't worry about it. From what I've heard from other students, try not to get Oakdale as your clinical group. It is a very small hospital and it is hard to get experience there and I've heard the nurses aren't too friendly. The first 8 weeks are crazy with learning all the skills. Once you get past that and get into going to the hospital it's not so bad. It will consume your life, especially those first weeks. The teachers are all very helpful though. Doing the reading is very important. Make sure you read all of Terry's reading assignments. They all take questions from the reading but Terry does especially. She will hit on topics during class but tests on them in WAY more depth. Just going back over her power points is not enough. We have the Dove uniforms this semester and we got to see the new uniforms. They are much more comfortable then what we have! Try to get all your vaccinations as early as possible. The wait at the Health Services office the first couple weeks is crazy. Hope that helps.
hey guys! we are starting in a month can you believe it?!!?!? I am so excited to meet all of u! I was wondering if anyone is coming from the Lodi, Stockton area to have a commuter friend? :) I am also wondering if you students that are in the program now, or if anyone has heard, how many hours the students are able to work, or if it is mainly just weekend work? Hope to hear from you guys soon!
Mammato3,
I agree, the expenses are tough right before Christmas! I'm working my way down the check list. I think I have most of it taken care of except for books and uniforms. I'm worried about how far into the semester we will need our uniforms. But if we are all in the same boat, then I'm sure the staff will need to come up with an alternative before we need them. Good luck working on your list. I'll be seeing you soon! :)
I believe that I signed up for the 6th for BLS.. looks like all you guys are going on the 4th? I was wondering when our clinicals are going to be? I thought it might be Monday and Tuesday since our classes are MTWTH for the first few weeks and then just Wednesday Thursday? That's just what I am thinking, since the packet really did not say much about it... I am getting so excited! Let me know if you guys have any news..!

apoppyfield,
I know....I read that on one of your earlier posts...i'm sorry:bluecry1: It would have been nice of them to let us know that ahead of time. Maybe they will let you return them? I dont know why they switched because they are just about the same price!!
