Just curious if anyone else was doing EC's BSN or currently in the program/finished the program? I am starting with Statistics for healthcare professionals MAT215, Ethics in Healthcare, and Eng201 expository writing =) 2 of them are 15 wks courses and one is an 8wk course so this should prove to be exciting! LOL I just want to get my BSN done within a yr if possible so i can move on to MSN-FNP program through Georgetown or Frontier =)

I'm totally with you for making the "2015" FNP deadline. I will probably get my Doctorate one day but if I can get the masters before the deadline it would give me some time to finish making babies and get them school age before my masters.
I was able to go in as a Non-matriculating student and I'm taking the three Gen-eds you have to have with EC for the BSN starting May 7th...not due to take my nclex til june 1st at least...i just can't start any nursing courses til i pass nclex...i have my hubby GI bill so no stopping now!
I'm done making babies myself...we have 3, and I just want to finish school while i have GI bill...i dont want to pay ANY more student loans off ever again!

It's good you are familiar with Excelsior. Have you taken other on-line courses? I don't know how the transition courses work, when my husband transitioned 10 years ago, everything except CPNE was credit by test.
I took the Excelsior Ethics exam back in February. It was tough, I thought I had failed, but the sheet said I made an A. I just finished Writing for the Professions (ENG 201) with an A. I worked my tail off for that grade, writing is my nemesis but the course was excellent, very broken down and systematic. While I did the English, I took the Ethics exam and the DSST World Religions.
I started Statistics for Health Care Professionals back in March. It's my understanding this was a brand new course. I think it still has a few kinks to be worked out. There is no pre-req for that course, but I would not recommend it unless one has had minimally a semester of College Algebra. From the discussions for class, it sounds like most of the students are really struggling. Don't get me wrong, it's been tough for me, but I spend several hours a week doing and redoing and redoing the homework. I also have a future son-in-law that knows that stuff pretty well and he has tutored me through some tough spots.
I am scheduled for the Humanities CLEP next week. I couldn't register for nursing core classes until I had finished the English, so starting May 7th, I am enrolled in Professional Transitions and Teaching and Learning in a Diverse Society. I believe those to be 8 week courses. As soon as I finish Statistics, I can register for the Research in Nursing Exam. I don't know what I'm doing after that, I can't think that far ahead. I would like to finish by the end of the year, but I think realistically it's probably going to be more like a year from now.
A lot for someone who hasn't cracked a textbook in almost 20 years.

Have you been accepted into EC's BSN program yet?
I have 3 courses left to complete my EC BSN.
If you are working full time I doubt you could complete this the BSN program in 1 year because of the demands of some of the courses.
Best of luck to you...
I've taken 3 other online courses through EC for my ASN...Art History, Communications and something else...i think...so i am familiar with how EC works and their online program.
I have NOT been fully accepted (take NCLEX the first week of June) But because I have my husbands GI bill they are allowing me to take Ethics, Statistics, and expository writing this coming term as a non-matriculating student. I do work full time at a clinic (where luckily between patients i can access EC's website/course) I work 5 days per week, but off every weekend and by Sept should hopefully be working 3 twelve hour shifts per week instead of 5 eight hour ones. I was able to study for and pass 6 exams in less than 5 mo so I think I can handle the work. I do not have a choice but to work full time and do school as well. My hubby is very supportive and helps with our kids a lot too.
What "demands" can you elaborate on? Paper writing? Scheduled time online? Just curious. I didnt' struggle with the other classes I took online and all three were 8wk courses i believe. Seemed I was writing papers more than anything.

some of the bsn course work requires heavy discussion with your classmates and you need to provide evidence to support what you say. -discussion participation is part of your grade.
the written assignment are not difficult just time consuming because you'll be reading articles, analysing them applying and citing them as evidence in the papers you write (because nursing is an evidence based practice) and the papers must be apa formatted.
i'll give you an example of what you can expect; in nur-446 you will be required to pick out a cultural group, research how that group learns, pick out a health promotion topic for that group, put together a lesson plan for that group being culturally competent on how that group learns, develop a health promotion project based on the health promotion topic, develop an evaluation tool to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, then you put on your program with your group and it is filmed and sent into the school.
another example of the writing assignments in nur 431 (elective) you have to write a paper analyzing the ppaca and conclude whether or not you support it and provide evidence as to why or why not.
the bsn courses are very challenging, the focus on research, critical thinking, analysis, and the nursing process and a holistic approach to nursing care, and the role of the nurse as an educator, and advocate for at risk communities, and an as an advocate for community health and health policy.
if you following the grading rubric and the syllabus and stay on top of the assignments and discussion you will have no problem.
hope that helps!
good luck!
excelsior!
thanks for the info i really appreciate it! Sounds very challenging, but then I would expect nothing less than that from EC! =) I like to write so that will be okay...I guess i'll do these three and see how I do before moving forward...i worry about the "filming" and sending something in, I do not have access to a video camera nor the money to buy one, and i do not know how to edit stuff like that either!
Tasha,
Most lap tops have built-in web cams these days, you can always use a lap top or even borrow or rent a video recording device.
If your facility has a medical media department check with them.....

Do you have to take the CPNE for the BSN? I am a long time grade from Regents (before the name change) and did the CPNE. I really would prefer to not do it again, lol. Just thinking about it makes me want to go the traditional route.

Nope, no CPNE for the BSN. That is a one-time ordeal!
