Anyone else pinning all hope on getting accepted to ONE program?

Published

Just wondering if there is anyone else out there who has only applied to ONE program? I do not have a lot of options and wanted an Accelerated BSN, so there are only a couple schools near me that offer that. So I am anxiously waiting to hear from the ONLY school I applied to! Unfortunately, there really were not any other options for me to obtain a BSN, so I am praying I will get in! So it is out of my hands for now, I have applied, sent in my resume, admissions essay, letters of reference, and here I sit anxiously waiting to see if I get an interview and then waiting to hear if I am accepted. My GPA in the BS I already have is a 3.6, but I am just starting to the 5 science pre-reqs I need. I have all the math pre-reqs done thank goodness!

Anyone else??

We will all have to keep each other updated on this "eggs in one basket" thread we have going on here! It really helps me to read about other people's positive experiences. I feel very inspired by this message board. I find myself reading other posts searching for the answer to the ever important question, "Are my stats good enough for me to be admitted to nursing school?" You know you do it too...So anyways, we should all keep one another feeling positive! Good luck to everyone on here! I will say a prayer for each and every one of you!! ;)

I was until I was rejected by that same program. I had started looking at other alternatives. Basically it means moving to NYC for about 1.5 years. They have more accelerated programs to chose from so I have a better chance of getting into one. I should never put all your hopes into anything. You should always have a backup plan. I do not know your situation so I cannot advise you on what your secondary choices might be. You probably already have an alternative but this program is the one you like the most.

P.S. Try your best to be persistent and never allow anyone to tell you that you can't do it!

I'm applying to my community colleg program I go to now in feb for this fall. The BSN programs are to expensive for me and the other associate programs are to far away or require different things. If I don't get accepted in the fall then I'll reapply for the spring 2010 and to another CC out of county.

The problem for me was that applying to just this one program took an awful lot of steam out of me... Getting all the paperwork together, meeting all the requirements, all this while taking 20 credits to complete all prereqs for graduation. I just did not have the energy to start the whole application process over with a different school, that may have a completely different set of requirements.

My grades and test scores are excellent, now why shouldn't they accept me, I don't know. Maybe my profile isn't what they're looking for.

Another first, last, and only applicant here...

The program I've applied for is 15 minutes from the home that we own free and clear... it would kill me to have to pay rent somewhere!

There is going to be a wide range of conditions for everyone. Depending on these conditions, how one presents themselves, and how the school politics is structured, formally and informally, an answer is not discretely definitive. I have 3 to 4 different alternatives selected to date, except they are not all simultaneous: what a waste of time and blowing up bridges before you need them.

I look at it like an "if-then" algorithm, with the science related subjects the most important, not only in grades for acceptance, but learning as much about the subject as you can cram in for your future liabililty. Liability can be in the form of potential legal suits, but people's health depend on a professional and your resulting actions or innactions will also make you loose sleep. Being a professional (. imo of course, ) is not a race, but an assurance of being able to project Honor and Integrity in your daily work-life each and every day no matter what work you perform (!). Your mileage may vary.

Well, I was one of those "put all my eggs into one basket" people, and unfortunately, it didn't work out so well for me. I only applied to Hopkins (early decision), and was not accepted. I was shocked, because my GPA when I graduated from my undergrad was 3.74 and I have 4.0 in my pre-reqs. Then I found out that they calculate ALL of my GPA--including my GPA from 1985 when I was 18 (yes, I'm 42 now) and dropped out/failed a bunch of classes. That brought my cum GPA down and I was no longer such a good candidate. I don't know why I thought those grades wouldn't matter, but I thought they would look beyond that to see what I had achieved in the last 10 years, since returning to school. Can you tell I'm still a little bitter about this??

Anyway, now I am scrambling to find other programs to apply to. I have since applied to Duke (and spoken with them on the phone about my situation), and am also planning on applying to Rush, and NYU. If none of those work out, then I will apply to Villanova for next year.

My point of this whole rant--do not give up. I hope everyone gets into their first choice school, but if you don't, just dust yourself off and find new schools to get excited about. It will happen. Good luck to all!

I think that we all need to keep in perspective the point that EVERYONE has a different and unique experience. No one can tell you that just b/c you applied to just one program and they did the same and did not get in that you will not get in. I hate to say it but they must not have gotten in for a reason. Maybe they had bad grades they were not aware would be a factor or a blip on their background check. Maybe they had a crazy myspace page with them posed with beer and cigarette in hand half naked. Maybe their competition was fiercer than they expected. WHO knows why they did not get in!? But I can guarantee you there was a reason! I only applied to one program and I have EVERY bit of confidence in myself that I WILL get in! If I don't, then I will think about plan B. The fact that I don't have a plan B will not automatically exclude me from getting accepted. :) This will be my second bachelor's and my first GPA was not a 4.0 or even close! From what I have read on these threads people have gotten accepted with far lesser of a GPA than mine. My GPA is however above and beyond the minimum requirement for my school of choice. I also have a 3.9 in pre reqs and did stellar on the Admittance test. I am not going to let the fact that someone else applied to one school and did not get in b/c that person is not me. I am sorry they did not get in and I am glad they had a "Back up plan." I have another bachelor's and the brains to take more classes, if I need to in order to apply to other programs. In the meantime however, I am certainly not going to take a multitude of extra classes I may or may not need and waste not only time but also money just for a back up. Life is my backup plan and it will be what it will be. If we don't get accepted into our first programs. Try, try again. It will not be the end of the world nor will it be the end of our lives as we know it. We will not then be banished from the pursuit of nursing and sentenced to a life without gainful employment. So, I think we all need to remember that each situation is different. I will be sure to keep you guys updated and let you know when I get in!!! Hopefully it will be at the school "in my basket" if not, it was not meant to be and I will move on to plan B. Good Luck everyone!!!!!

For now, my only option is one program. I will be so devastated if I don't get in. I was enrolled in classes two years ago when I became pregnant for our third child, our little "surprise blessing". So anyway, my other kids are in school but the little guy won't be in school for a few years.

The program I want to get into is a two year ADN program that is offered part time evenings and weekends. They only accept applicants every two years. If I don't get in this program I will have to wait until my one year old is in school and do a one year Accelerated BSN. The program I want to get into is based on points. Most points are based on our grades in pre reqs so I have to get all A's. I have three more pre reqs to take and then I'll apply in August!

stc254,

If you want to make straight A's in all your pre-reqs, You will! Just stay positive. That is what it is all about. You must have patience to be successful!

I'm in this boat too. I'm only planning on applying to one program, and I REALLY hope I get in. Like BlueMalibu, my husband and I recently acquired a house (sadly, my husband's father passed away a year ago), and there is only one accelerated program in the area, that...get this...only accepts 10-15 people A YEAR!! Granted, it is a relatively small town, but still! I sort-of have a plan B, but it is basically just to work towards the requirements to get into the local ADN program, apply there, and, if I also don't get in there (they have this weird point system based on things I don't really have in my background, including work experience as a CNA II and a prior degree in another healthcare field) maybe boost my application with more volunteering and such and try again to the accelerated program in 2011. I have one B on all of my college transcripts (which kind-of sucks that it counts...I was still in high school still at the time doing what they call "dual enrollment" so I could take college classes for free), and have so far made As in the pre reqs as well. I'm hoping that will be enough, but you never know. 50% of the points process is based on GPA. The other 50% is a combination of a personal interview (where you talk about your resume) and the TEAS exam. I'm hoping I can rock one or both of those out.

Good luck to all! I'm always of the mindset that it is best to be realistically optimistic, if that makes any sense ;)

I like that. Realistically optimistic!
