Anyone applying to Yale GEPN program for Fall 2009?

Published

Hi,

Since there was a very extensive thread last year about application process to Yale, I thought I would start a new thread for 2009 hopefuls. I am working on my application and wanted to know who else chose Yale as one of their options. What program? How is the application process going? Essay writing? Any anxieties? I am applying to the Adult Advanced Practice Nursing but still deciding on the specialty. The hardest part for me is the essay writing as English is not my first language, but I have been working on it for some time now and getting close to finishing the final version. Anyone else wants to share?

So...two of my recommenders sent my letters in, but I can't get ahold of the last one. Kind of freaking out! I hope he sends it today....:uhoh21:

Try contacting him again - the deadline is Nov. 1st!

Good luck Abby :)

Thanks Kimiij! I finally got ahold of him and he said that he sent it yesterday. His email crashed, so he had a hard time contacting me. Now the waiting begins!

Hi everyone,

I am new to this thread. I submitted my application on 10/31 (I know, I waited until the last day:uhoh3:) I am applying for nurse midwifery track. After reading the thread, I realized that I really mess up on the essay cause I thought they were looking for 6 small essays and I did not mention too much about research:banghead:. Also I found out the midwifery track is really popular and competitive, that really worried me. Because I don't have many clinical experiences, (I just received my BA degree) which probably make my application sounds weak and unconvincing. Well there is nothing I can do at this point but to wait. But I wont get my hope up since the essay will probably look really random.

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself planet612! They look at your application as a whole, and I think that writing each essay separately is a pretty common thing that applicants do. This is a long a hard process and just remember that you will end up wherever you are supposed to be and wherever is the best match for you (at least that is always what I tell myself!). Good luck! :D

Hey Planet612,

It's so nice to hear someone else is applying without loads of patient care experience! I really wonder how many people do get admitted right out of undergrad, I've done some volunteer work with a social services center but I went to a really tough school for undergrad so I didn't have time to do much clinical work. This whole process is so tough, I have absolutely no idea what my odds are of getting in anywhere, it's hard to know what they're looking for.

Anyone want to give a feel for the background you're coming from? I have a pretty good GPA and I study biomedical science, have done a research project, rocked my GREs, and have a lot of diverse experiences with working with people and travel, but I worry that not having worked in a clinic or hospital will hurt me...

It is nice to hear other peoples' backgrounds and interests. I'm still an undergrad completing a major in molecular cell biology. I thought I wanted to do research and realized I hate being in the lab and I really need a career working with people. I personally want to practice critical/acute care. I love the thrill of the ED, but I know after years of the fast pace, it'll wear me out... so then I hope to work with the terminally ill and practice more holistic-type medicine.

I don't have very "hands-on" patient care experience either. I work at a chiropractic office and I love it, but I really only get to initiate biofeedback training and other physiotherapies. I have volunteered and shadowed a variety of places to get a feel for where I want to be, however. I really loved working with life star and the trauma clinic and so I hope to be working with trauma patients in a few years!

what are your stories?:nurse:

HI CharmedJ7

I have no idea either. But the good thing is our chance of getting in is not zero since we applied. What specialty did you apply?

CharmedJ7,

I can totally sympathize with you. I'm finishing my BA in Social Policy at Northwestern and the difficulty of many of the classes is just killing my GPA (something I never worried about until I started applying to nursing school!). I do have some clinical experience with infants (which might be lucky since I'm applying for PNP), but other than that I'm pretty much in the same boat as you...volunteer experience and internships with social service agencies but not much clinical. I'm also super confused about the GRE situation. I took the GREs last week and I was happy with my results (not ecstatic, but I think they're solid). I know Yale (and many other universities') standard answer is "get above a 500 on each" but what is a real competitive score?

Anyway...it's really nice to have all of you to bounce this off of

Good luck to all!

Sevillaes - I wouldn't worry too much about the GREs, unfortunately for me (since I did really well) I don't think that they matter much unless you really bombed. I'm crossing my fingers that it does me some good but my impression is that 'the total package' matters more, especially clinical experiences or those which show you *really* know for sure you want to do this profession. Also, yay Northwestern! I'm from that area and I took a class there one summer, hope you are enjoying it!

For me I've done tons of research into it, talked to many health professionals (although cannot for the life of me find an NP to shadow, maybe because I got to school in Quebec and it's a bit less established here), have a lot of experience with people across the lifespan and different cultures, and have an academic basis in both the arts and science of human functioning. I just wonder what percentage of people applying have the whole package, the academics, well-written essay, solid recommendations, and healthcare experience? I'm quite sure now that this is what I want to do, but I haven't known for ages so I don't have an application perfectly tailored to nursing by any stretch.

Anyhow I'm applying to 8 schools for FNP, pretty much anywhere I have the pre-requisites for. It'll be really interesting where, if anywhere, I get in. What about you guys? Where else are you applying?

Hello All,

I, too, am applying to GEPN 2009 for the FNP specialty. I don't have as much background in the sciences/healthcare field but I have taken a ton of prerequisites since March and have been doing research in an ER and NICU at a hospital here in NYC. As an undergrad I was studying Theater and Music so I'm completely new to all of this! Since graduating 4 years ago I've lived here in NYC and worked in the Performing Arts Industry and have also lived abroad in Asia and Central America. It's been a crazy 4 years but I've been searching for something that would enable me to give back to the world and also find skills that would change me for the better... and I came up with the FNP specialty.

It's great to know there are so many others applying to the GEPN who are very excited about it. I want to attend school somewhere with others who are completely excited about school. I was taking prerequisites at a local community college and the students there weren't as driven the way all of you are who posted in this forum.

Good luck to everyone and I hope we all get into Yale for next year!
