Future student looking for good NMW reads
Baby catcher by Peggy Vincent is an excellent memoir and it gives you a great look at what it means to be a homebirth CNM. One of the best midwifery memoirs.

How do I find a list of accredited online adult NP programs?
Have you looked at the Frontier School?

Is it worth it going for a doula Certification?
I would say no. But, it depends on how long it will take you to start midwifery school in earnest. If it will take you 10 years to start midwifery school, then why not? However, if you plan to start school soon, then go ahead and take the doula training but forego the certification process. I worked as a certified Lamaze CBE and an uncertified doula. No one ever asked me if I was certified and I don't think not being certified impacted my ability to be a good doula.

Labor of Love: A Midwife's Memoir
I read Labor of Love and felt like it was just OK. I think I felt this way because I had read Peggy Vincent's Baby Catcher: Chronicles of a Modern Midwife. This book was EXCELLENT. IMO, Vincent's book is a better read than Labor of Love. I am going to look into the other books mentioned on this thread...I always love a good midwifery read.

some truths about CNM salaries and benefits
Thanks for this breakdown! I am also interested in hearing others' experiences. Also, what about those that work for themselves?

so where do u get your scrubs from....
I get mine from Blue Sky Scrubs. They are high quality scrubs- extremely soft and well-made. They are kind a price - $20 for the simple scrubs and $30 for the original scrubs. Price is for a top or a bottom.

Anyone applying to Yale GEPN program for Fall 2009?
Abby - we won't hear about the Fuld scholarship until the summer. At that time they will announce their decisions and they will announce the amount. So...did everyone get the email from Frank Grosso? There's so much stuff to be done and it's all in ten different places...they should have just had one list that we could check off...

They just have to be pictures of that size. This is kind of a random question. But, how is everyone sending their responses? By regular mail or are they sending it priority or something else?

I've heard of the HSPS but the possible sacrifice just isn't worth it for me. One thing you should ask is if they can enact a "stop loss" action on you. If the US is in a protracted engagement and the army needs service members, the army can stop anyone who's unit is set for int'l deployment from leaving their post, even if their service contract is supposed to end at X amount years. I'm not sure if this applies to those in education- and loan- related service agreements but I know that it happens for regular enlisted members.

Biddy- The merit scholarship was awarded to me. I will still have to take out about $50,000 in loans the first year which sucks. The YSN scholarship is based on EFC (I had a low EFC because for much of 2008 I was not working). I would definitely call them to negotiate because if your husband won't have a job for the next six months or so then they should definitely take that into consideration. Be honest with them that you are considering JHU b/c of the lack of aid. Why is Yale so much more expensive than other schools? And yes, the "9 Months" on the Financial Aid award letter threw me off as well. I also feel like they understated the travel and parking fees. Somewhat related to financial issues....Are people getting cars?
