  1. Baby catcher by Peggy Vincent is an excellent memoir and it gives you a great look at what it means to be a homebirth CNM. One of the best midwifery memoirs.
  2. Have you looked at the Frontier School?
  3. I would say no. But, it depends on how long it will take you to start midwifery school in earnest. If it will take you 10 years to start midwifery school, then why not? However, if you plan to start school soon, then go ahead and take the doula training but forego the certification process. I worked as a certified Lamaze CBE and an uncertified doula. No one ever asked me if I was certified and I don't think not being certified impacted my ability to be a good doula.
  4. I read Labor of Love and felt like it was just OK. I think I felt this way because I had read Peggy Vincent's Baby Catcher: Chronicles of a Modern Midwife. This book was EXCELLENT. IMO, Vincent's book is a better read than Labor of Love. I am going to look into the other books mentioned on this thread...I always love a good midwifery read.
  5. Yale has a two-year on-campus RN to MSN/NP program. Good luck!
  6. Thanks for this breakdown! I am also interested in hearing others' experiences. Also, what about those that work for themselves?
  7. I get mine from Blue Sky Scrubs. They are high quality scrubs- extremely soft and well-made. They are kind a price - $20 for the simple scrubs and $30 for the original scrubs. Price is for a top or a bottom.
  8. I went to Georgetown for undergrad but when I graduated I also completed some pre-reqs at my state school. My undergrad and post-grad GPA was around a 3.5. Application due: end of October (three page essay, three letters of recommendation, general app form) Offered/Denied interview: mid-December Interview: end of January Final Decisions: mid-February If you want any details, feel free to send me a message :)
  9. Abby - we won't hear about the Fuld scholarship until the summer. At that time they will announce their decisions and they will announce the amount. So...did everyone get the email from Frank Grosso? There's so much stuff to be done and it's all in ten different places...they should have just had one list that we could check off...
  10. Well...all of my paperwork is in! I wonder when we start getting more info about the upcoming school year?
  11. This is what I did too...I actually used the proofs from my senior year in college! LOL. I am going to send everything off tomorrow morning :)
  12. They just have to be pictures of that size. This is kind of a random question. But, how is everyone sending their responses? By regular mail or are they sending it priority or something else?
  13. I'm really glad you decided on Yale!
  14. I've heard of the HSPS but the possible sacrifice just isn't worth it for me. One thing you should ask is if they can enact a "stop loss" action on you. If the US is in a protracted engagement and the army needs service members, the army can stop anyone who's unit is set for int'l deployment from leaving their post, even if their service contract is supposed to end at X amount years. I'm not sure if this applies to those in education- and loan- related service agreements but I know that it happens for regular enlisted members.
  15. Biddy- The merit scholarship was awarded to me. I will still have to take out about $50,000 in loans the first year which sucks. The YSN scholarship is based on EFC (I had a low EFC because for much of 2008 I was not working). I would definitely call them to negotiate because if your husband won't have a job for the next six months or so then they should definitely take that into consideration. Be honest with them that you are considering JHU b/c of the lack of aid. Why is Yale so much more expensive than other schools? And yes, the "9 Months" on the Financial Aid award letter threw me off as well. I also feel like they understated the travel and parking fees. Somewhat related to financial issues....Are people getting cars?
  16. Total Student Budget for 9 months: $65,660 I'm guessing the particulars of the Scholarships will differ by need and merit. Scholarships: $16,160 (around $8,600 of this was the YSN scholarship, the rest was a merit scholarship) Loans: $28,000 Sub. Stafford: $8500 Unsub. Stafford Loan: $12000 Perkins Loan: $6000 Nursing Student Loan: $1500 Unless your EFC is out of the park, I think everyone's package will look very similar. As you can see, the aid given does not necessarily meet the need. Private Scholarships is likely to be= Budget - (Scholarships + Federal Loans + EFC)
  17. I got my financial aid letter today. Just as I expected....there really weren't any surprises.
  18. I haven't heard yet....Anxiously waiting but I'm fairly certain (and at the same time afraid ) that there won't be any surprises and that it will be very similar to what they outlined in the Financial Aid presentation on interview day.
  19. I also want to find a place with other nursing students. Living in a one bedroom is extremely expensive (my host pays over $1000 for hers). So, I would like to find a share with other students that is less than that!
  20. Yes - I think he was the dean/director of student affairs? He did say there was a website that they would send us... I stayed with someone who lived in Wooster Square - she had a really nice 1 bedroom apartment.
  21. Oh I was just talking out my own reservations about living in on-campus housing- not really responding to anyone in particular :). But it's great to know that the on-campus apartments are unfurnished...they would definitely be an option in that case.
  22. I am leaning towards living in an off-campus apartment in East Rock or Wooster Square. But, I am definitely open to living on-campus as well. The thing is I already have furniture that I would rather not give away or sell. I have a dining room set and a couch and my own bed, etc. That's all stuff I would rather keep. Anyways, anyone interested in perhaps looking for apartments together...let me know by pm!
  23. I got in!! Yay! So happy. Finally found out today when I came home and got the mail. I am going to be in the nurse-midwifery specialty. Congrats everyone and I hope to see you all in the fall!
  24. Elizabeth83 called earlier today and they said they can't give results over the phone.
