Nursing Students Post Graduate

I thought I would start another thread about Yale GEPN. Would like to hear from anyone and everyone thats applying to the program for the fall of 2008? Its obvious that all of those that applied for the fall of this year have gotten their acceptance letters and congrats to them all, hopefully I will meet them all next year. In the meantime, I would like to hear from those going for the fall of 08. What were your major/degree in undergrad? Where are u now in the application process?

Hope to hear from all...

Oh Wow! That's all I need...MORE ANXIETY (lol). Thanks for the update though.

Anxiety.. OMG that's not even the gest of how i 'm feeling. I'm going to focus on other things besides that letter. I'm going to work out and hangout and pray...lol.

I'm curious to know how many people applied for my specialty. If I get an invite for an interview I don't think I will care too much.

wish u all the best

Christina: I didn't get your PM, try resending it to me...I've had trouble with receiving PM's before. Sorry bout that!

To all, Exciting news!!! I emailed Angela today to ask her a question regarding an address change, etc not important. What is important is she said that interview letters were sent TODAY 12/18! Good luck everyone!

smit1989, may I know Angela's answer re: address change? I plan on moving out of state and I would love to know if I need to notify Yale in advance about that.

TIA!

If the interview letters were sent yesterday, how long do you guys think they will take to reach central US?

I don't know. Mail from the Northeast usually takes about 2-3 days to get to me in the South, but one time my mom mailed me something and I got it the next day. With the holiday mail and, if their University Mail services are anything like where I work, I would give it at least 4-5 business days.

I agree with Birth at least 3 days depending on if they mailed them early tuesday or late tuesday. Realistically I would give it a week if it comes before Christmas great if it comes btw the 26 and 31 I am cool with that too as long as I get an invite I am cool.

Does anyone know if, since Yale does not award a BSN, it will be impossible to continue into a DNP program? I was looking at some of the schools that offer it such as Columbia and Johns Hopkins and they require a BSN and MSN to apply. Just wondering if there is some workaround that I am not aware of?

I'm not sure about DNP, but I believe a BSN is not required for admissions to a doctorate (Ph.D.) program in nursing. At least not in Yale, I don't think.

I heard that many schools have started "phasing out" DNP programs and replacing it with Ph.D. programs, but then again I'm not sure. This is a good question since I'm interested in continuing on to get my Ph.D. down the road.

The DNP (Doctorate of Nursing Practice) is not being phased out. In fact, it is set to be the entry level to nurse practitioner set for 2015 by the AACN. You can do a search on these boards to read more about it and what people are saying.

I am concerned that the Yale GEPN traps students where they cannot apply for the DNP programs, because of the requirement of a BSN. Can anyone confirm this?

Hi fnp4me,

I too have been checking out DNP options and had the same concern but I think it depends on the individual program. The University of Washington's DNP requires either a BSN or an MSN but not both - their admissions requirements vary depending on which degree you're coming in with. Same with the University of Arizona (which incidentally offers the DNP online - very intriguing). It seems as if doctoral programs are realizing that a whole crop of Master's-prepared nurses will not have their BSNs because of the direct-entry options.

Have you looked at the All Nursing Schools website? You can search for nursing schools by degree and they link to each school's site so you can look up their particular requirements.

Pardon me for lurking since I didn't apply to Yale (staying on the West Coast) but know a lot of people who did. A good friend of mine graduated from their program about two years ago and absolutely LOVED it! Good luck to those of you awaiting letters ... I'm going to go pounce on the mailman and see if he has anything for me from UCSF. :)

I just got my interview letter today - and I got one scheduled for Jan 18th. I applied to WHNP...

Note - I live in CT so it prob only took a day or so to get to me...but you guys should all be getting your letters very soon!

Teenyjo, you are right! I was looking at the admission requirements for Columbia University's DrNP program but on a separate FAQ it says:

What are the admission requirements for the post-master's DrNP program?

Admission criteria include:

New York State license as an Advanced Practice Nurse

Current professional certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse

Master's degree in advanced nursing practice from an NLN or CCNE accredited program

Relevant experience in advanced practice nursing

Three references attesting to applicant's academic ability and potential, including one from a professional colleague

Satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

Statistics course taken within the past five years

Resume or CV

Personal goal statement

On site interview

It doesn't look like the Yale GEPN pathway will prevent eventually getting a DNP if you want. It also looks like Johns Hopkins just requires a "Bachelors OR a Masters" so you are correct in that they are assuming all APN's aren't traditional BSN - MSN applicants. Just thought I'd share!
