Anyone applying to Yale GEPN for fall of 08'

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I thought I would start another thread about Yale GEPN. Would like to hear from anyone and everyone thats applying to the program for the fall of 2008? Its obvious that all of those that applied for the fall of this year have gotten their acceptance letters and congrats to them all, hopefully I will meet them all next year. In the meantime, I would like to hear from those going for the fall of 08. What were your major/degree in undergrad? Where are u now in the application process?

Hope to hear from all...

Hi again,

I am in the FNP specialty and just moved here from San Francisco. It's a big scary move, but definitely worth it. I currently live in the Westville section of New Haven, but spent the last 6 months in East Rock. Both are great neighborhoods and recommend either one. There is a shuttle that goes to East Rock, although it's not as great as Yale makes it out to be. East Rock is also known as the grad ghetto and Westville is a little more spread out and has more families. They are both the same distance to the nursing school just in different directions. I think Westville might be slightly less expensive than East Rock. New Haven has nice parts and not-so-nice parts, so my recommendation would be to stick to those 2 neighborhoods. Downtown has some nice areas too, but it is busier and there are blocks that are nice and blocks that aren't, so it's hard to know what you're getting unless you see the place in person.

Hmmm... what do I wish I knew before coming? I wish I knew that it really isn't as tough as I had it cracked up to be. It definitely requires work on your end, but it's really not all that bad. You will find your groove quickly, and you still have time for some resemblance of a life. You will be amazed at how nice and down to earth the faculty are - everyone is awesome.

Well, I must get back to studying... If anyone has any other questions, feel free to PM me. Have a good weekend

You are the best! Thank you for sharing with us!

I'm moving from San Francisco also, and that's how it feels to me -- very scary! Did you find the transition really difficult? What part of the city did you live in? I live in Noe Valley currently.

So is Westville part of New Haven, or a suburb? Also, do you feel that a car is necessary your first year? We were told that it wasn't, but I have a feeling that it will be.

Thanks again, and please only respond when you have time, as I'm sure I could just keep firing a million questions. ;)

Hey y'all,

I started a Google group for our class (class of 2011!), so that we can chat and figure out housing stuff, moving, etc. I'm going to see if I can get a couple current students to join the group as well to kindly share their vast knowledge with us! If you'd like to be a member, please send me a PM, and I'll then send you an invitation. :)

Hope you are having a nice Sunday! I'm doing lots of physio reading, but excited to watch the Oscars tonight!

Well, I got my financial aid statement and I have to say that I think that's the deciding factor for me. My EFC is $15K and I have to take out $32K in loans. That seems a little insane for me and that's just the first year! There's no way I can afford that, I definitely don't have that kind of money and I don't want to take out that much in loans. :o

I'm thinking that I'll probably do a BSN/RN program where I currently am and then apply to a Master's program in a couple of years.

Anyone else daunted by the financial insanity of the program?

Yeah, it is crazy (although I haven't received my packet yet), but we have been talking about it on the Google group. It's so unfortunate with how much money Yale has that they can't do more for their admitted students. I don't think it's going to keep me from going there, but then again, I haven't received my packet of info yet!

Thanks Kekela Nikol for your great advice. I know I personally appreciate it. This will be my last time posting to the forum. I just wanted to congratulate everyone for their acceptances to Yale. Yale is a fantastic school and offers a lot of great opportunities for future NPs. Unfortunately, I have decided not to go due to a combination of financial reasons and other academic opportunities. I just wanted to wish everyone who has decided to go into the GEPN program lots of luck. I probably will end up applying again sometime in the not-too-distant future, but I have been in school for a long time and will continue to be for a little bit. You all are in my prayers. Good luck and I hope you enjoy Yale and New Haven :wink2:.

Gigi

Just a reminder -- if you were accepted to Yale's GEPN program (or are on the waitlist!), please send me a PM with your email address and I'll add you to our Google group. We are currently chatting about housing, moving and financial aid, so please join us if you're interested!

Best,

Kens

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about second round applications. One of my transcripts arrived late and I was totally devastated because I am currently in sub-Saharan africa and it was really hard for me to get my stuff in.

Angela said that they only consider applications if there is space after April 1st. Does anyone know the odds of this happening and how it works?

I would seriously appreciate any information at all. I am so stressed out and sad because I know that I want to go to Yale and I tried my best to make it happen.

Thank you all in advance and congrats to those that are on their way!!

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum. I will be applying to YSN for Fall 09' and would like to get some advice from those of you who got accepted this year. Could you tell me about yourself and your credentials? I will be finishing up my PhD in biomedical sciences next year, have a 3.5 science GPA from college, lots of graduate level courses and I will be re-taking my GRE this summer. I took the GRE already over 6 years ago, but the scores are too old. I want to know what my chances are to be accepted. What is the most/least popular specialty? Is there any particular track that is harder or easier to get into based on the pool of applicants? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Congratulations to those accepted! I need some words of encouragement...

Hi,

I'm new to this...what's a PM and how do I send you one?? I'm attending YSN this fall too but specializing in oncology. There doesn't seem to be too many with that specialty. I'd love to join your google group - if you don't mind letting me know how!?!

Thanks!

MC

Hey MC,

This was last year's thread. I'm not sure if there's a 2009 Google group.

Hunt for the 2009 folks, then maybe start a group. It was really helpful and fun for us last year.

Jenn

what were you're stats by the way? I applied to the ANP/GNP program for Fall 2011...and am hoping with major fears
