I thought I would start another thread about Yale GEPN. Would like to hear from anyone and everyone thats applying to the program for the fall of 2008? Its obvious that all of those that applied for the fall of this year have gotten their acceptance letters and congrats to them all, hopefully I will meet them all next year. In the meantime, I would like to hear from those going for the fall of 08. What were your major/degree in undergrad? Where are u now in the application process?
Hope to hear from all...

So when I calculated it, I think it came out to be $94,000 for the three years, give or take. So, not as bad as it could be, but still bad enough! Are you worried about this, too? Perhaps I should just not worry about it!
Does anyone here know about how the private loan thing works? I imagine we have to find it on our own, and I'm guessing that the interest rate isn't incredibly low? I'm going to have to do this 100% by loans.
I'm in the same boat. Whatever isn't covered by financial aid, I'll have to get in private loans. I was really surprised when we were told at the orientation that the average student debt at the end of the program was like $67,000. Did anyone else hear that? Maybe I was just dreaming, but that isn't nearly as bad as I imagined!
How does that work though? If the average expense for each year is $50K and they really don't give free money (scholarships/grants), wouldn't the average debt be more. Maybe it's because people work part time as RNs during the specialty years.
Btw, the chat board says they're going to try to send out financial aid packages by the end of this week. Hopefully, we'll all get something!
This is from Yale's website:
Tuition, Special Fees, and Costs
Full-time tuition for master's and doctoral students is $13,955 per term in the fall and spring terms. Students in the first year of the Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing also have a summer tuition fee of $10,545.
So this equals about $98,000 or so.
That seems right, yes?
Although that's just for tuition, not living expenses. Also, perhaps the masters portion has summer courses?
I don't believe that there are summer courses during the specialty years - from what I heard that at the orientation. I think the only summer session we have is during the GEPN year.
Your numbers seem right - but I guess that would only be the tuition, not including living expenses and all that.
Kens and all,
I'm not heading to Yale, but I've been doing some preliminary research into private loans. This site has a pretty comprehensive list of private lenders which can be used to constrast current rates or link to their specific sites.
I'm sure the Fin. Aid office will give you specific instructions, but I've been told by JHU not to apply for any private loans until the school's award package has been granted. Just wanted to post this for anyone who may be interested:

I recall hearing that too (about the $67K average loan debt). Trying to decide between Yale and OHSU myself (got into Columbia as well but have pretty much excluded that as an option...) I was hoping that the decision by Yale and some of the other Ivies to use more of their endowment for tuition assistance would bode well for our financial aid packages... We'll find out soon, I guess!

That's pretty much what I said to both Columbia and UCSF. Screw Columbia for not giving me money, and screw UCSF for still not letting me know if I get in or not!
Can't wait to meet you in the fall!
