Anyone applying to Yale GEPN for fall of 08'

Published

I thought I would start another thread about Yale GEPN. Would like to hear from anyone and everyone thats applying to the program for the fall of 2008? Its obvious that all of those that applied for the fall of this year have gotten their acceptance letters and congrats to them all, hopefully I will meet them all next year. In the meantime, I would like to hear from those going for the fall of 08. What were your major/degree in undergrad? Where are u now in the application process?

Hope to hear from all...

i made a slip up and forget to turn in my financial aid forms by feb 1. turned it in today but i'm not expecting to get an amount of aid decent enough to make me go there. incredibly bummed out but where do you look for private loans?

I recall hearing that too (about the $67K average loan debt). Trying to decide between Yale and OHSU myself (got into Columbia as well but have pretty much excluded that as an option...) I was hoping that the decision by Yale and some of the other Ivies to use more of their endowment for tuition assistance would bode well for our financial aid packages... We'll find out soon, I guess! :D

krysprout - I'm hoping the same thing! We'll see how much it will affect our financial aid packages!

shortcake - check out Asherah's post above, there is a link to more information about private loans. :)

How much do you guys think turning in the forms late affects things?

Or, does it only affect how quickly you get your packet in the mail?

I am sure everybody received the email from Carolyn Falls this afternoon about the delay in the financial aid letter until early next week. This is kind of a bummer for me as I am flying home next week to have a long discussion with my parent about my loan situation.

I was wondering if there's any current GEPN students on here that could let me know how much money approx. that we are likely to get from Yale?

Thanks! :)

Yeah, I was bummed too. I'm worried that we aren't going to get anything but the maximum in Stafford loans.

Kev, if that's the case, what will you do?

Kens,

I will still go to Yale regardless the amount of the financial aid. I have talked to my parents and they are willing to co-sign for any loans that I may have to take out. Back 5 years ago I thought about going to med school so I am 'kinda' prepared for the worst :uhoh21: when it comes to loans.

$67,000 average in loan doesn't sound terribly bad, does it?

Ooohhh money money money money ... :D

No, it doesn't sound bad, but I don't understand how that is possible unless they give out a pretty good chunk of money!

Haha true that. Does it really sound too good to be true? :uhoh21:

Do you know any info from previous years?

Hi incoming GEPNs! I am currently a GEPN student at Yale and am so far loving the program. Be prepared to be put to work!! I remember spending a lot of time in this forum last year looking for any tidbit of info I could get... I was quite excited. I just looked at the last few posts and saw that some of you were wondering how much money Yale gives out, and i'm sad to say that it's really not much. I think most people that got a scholarship was $5000 or under. You should be getting a packet from the financial aid department soon and that will have a ton of info in it. It will tell you how much in loans you qualified for, and then if there's a difference between the estimated cost for the year and what you received in loans, you can take out as much of the difference as you want in private loans. They recommend some private loan venders (Yale itself is a private loan vender) or you can find one on your own. Last year, the total cost for everything (tuition, books, living expenses, etc) was $61,000. How much money you take out really depends on what kind of savings you have or if you have family to help you out. I ended up having to take out the full 61,000 (ouch!!!). Rest assured, if you have to take out the full amount also, it's still definitely do-able.

I am more than happy to answer any other questions anyone may have - just PM me as I don't check these boards too often (I was procrastinating right now and haven't been on this site in months). Enjoy your time off before starting!! :)

Hi, KekelaNikol!

Thanks so much for joining out posting and sharing your knowledge with us! Yes, we are all scrambling for any bit of information that we can about that program. Also, some people have tough decisions to make between schools, so it's great to hear from a current GEPN student.

What is your specialty? Where did you move from?

Are there things that you know now that you wish you knew before starting the program?

How do you like living in New Haven? What part of town do you live in, and what part(s) would you recommend to others?

Thanks a million for your help! :)

Kens
