Anyone applying to Yale GEPN for fall of 08'

Published

I thought I would start another thread about Yale GEPN. Would like to hear from anyone and everyone thats applying to the program for the fall of 2008? Its obvious that all of those that applied for the fall of this year have gotten their acceptance letters and congrats to them all, hopefully I will meet them all next year. In the meantime, I would like to hear from those going for the fall of 08. What were your major/degree in undergrad? Where are u now in the application process?

Hope to hear from all...

I'm deciding between Yale and Penn but am leaning towards Yale. It is a tough choice though since Penn offered to cover so much of my first year expenses in grants... What criteria are you guys using to decide? Must be more than just $$ since all the programs are so expensive. I'm a little worried that you don't have the option of a step out year at Yale since I heard it's easier to get an NP job if you've had prior RN experience... What are your guys' thoughts?

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Maybe I'm confused, but I totally thought you could step out for a year if you wanted to. Remind me of your specialty?

FNP. I believe the Yale program is straight 3 years with no option to step out, or at least they don't encourage it? I think you can do part time though? Is that not true for other specialties?

Well, I know acute care likes you to have more clinical experience before starting the program, but it's not mandatory. That was a surprise when I learned it during the interview, as I thought I would just be going straight through without question.

Hey, do you guys remember what our uniforms look like? They were blue scrubs with a white lab coat, right?

I'm glad to hear that you are planning to go straight through since I got the impression that they really preferred that we work for at least six months before starting the MSN portion (although it's not mandatory of course!). I'd like to go straight through as well!

I don't remember stepping out being an option at Yale. I would prefer to just go straight through anyway.

Yale blue :D

One option that I am considering right now is working part time as an RN while I'm in the specialty years. That way I'll have some paid experience as an RN under my belt when I apply for NP jobs. Of course, if at that time I decide not to work during the last two years, I won't have to. But at least I'll have the option!

I don't remember stepping out being an option either... However, I'd rather go straight through anyway! :) I can't remember about the part-time option during the specialty years - I feel like I remember someone saying that was a possibility.

Yale blue :D

Hee hee, I stand corrected!

I'm coming into this post rather late in the game, so I apologize. Congrats to everyone who received an interview and was either wait-listed or admitted. For those who did not get admitted, I wish you the best of luck in your career and I'm sure you all will be phenomenal nurse practitioners. I, myself, have been admitted to the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner specialty at Yale. I am incredibly honored to be admitted and think the Peds program at Yale is top notch. However, I have not fully decided if I am going to attend; I have been admitted to other programs including a doctoral program.

I have read some of the posts and I know how difficult it is to choose between two great programs. If there is anyone who is deciding between UPenn and another school, feel free to send me a message. I have lived in Philadelphia for the past five years and am a Penn alumna. Although I cannot speak intelligently about the nursing program, I would be happy to give you a student's perspective about the school in general. Feel free to IM me on here if you are curious or would like to know some things about Philly (especially housing). I wish you all the best of luck with your decisions and I may see some of you at Yale this fall :).

So I've decided on Yale as well. Screw UW and their waitlist.

I'm doing A/GNP -- anyone else in this thread an admitted Yale Gero?

Kevy, I work in a Level I Trauma Center ED too! But I'm not going into acute care, as much as I love the environment of the ED. I've been here a year and a half and it really has been awesome. But the only NPs in our ED are ANPs who do the fast-track primary care type stuff, sniffles and sore throats and whatnot. But all the nurses here rock. Seriously. They kick ass.

Anyway, can't wait to meet y'all. Bring on the blue scrubs!

Glad to hear you chose Yale, fibergirl! Yes, bring on those blue (er, Yale blue) scrubs! :yeah:
