Any words of wisdom?

Nurses General Nursing

OK yall, my long vacation is coming to a fast halt. As several of you know, I resigned my most recent job (of 7 years) in March. The only regret I've had, is that I didn't do it sooner.

Within the first week of unemployment I had 3 interviews. All 3 ended up making offers. I had tentatively decided on one, until the 3rd called a few weeks later and made an offer I couldn't refuse.

So - on Monday I will begin my new position as Health Care Finder for Humana Military Healthcare Services. The hours are fantastic - Mon - Fri 0730-1630. I will be working at the hospital on the same base where my husband is stationed. I'm very excited!!!:D In June, I'll be going to Hampstead, Virginia for 3 weeks of additional training. Went out shopping for some new clothes today, had a haircut yesterday - you know, gotta look sharp.

Having worked primarily in psych for 12 years, this is going to be a pretty big change for me I believe, and although I have always and likely will always consider myself to be a psych nurse at heart, I'm looking forward to new challenges and experiences. I won't be dealing with any psych at all, I understand all those referrals go through an office in another state. I recently purchased the book I'd seen mentioned here - "Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy" to give myself a crash refresher course. I won't be doing any hands-on bedside nursing, but want to be as prepared as possible. I do feel that a LOT of the case management, triage, and crisis skills I developed during the last several years will be to my benefit in this new world.

If anyone has any suggestions, words of wisdom, etc. to offer - I'M ALL EARS!!! Thanks in advance.

Mary:D

congrats Mary,

I am sure you'll be doing great!

The first few weeks might be hard and strange, but you want to do it: go for it!

Looking great with a new haircut and new clothes helps a lot too!!

Take care, Renee

CONGRATS TO ALL!!! Welcome to the wonderful world of bankers hours! :lol2:

Words of wisdom from someone who has worked in the corporate side of nursing for the last 10 years...

1. Don't get offended or disillusioned with people who don't think you're a nurse if you don't work in the hospital.

2. Be mindful of the "pecking order" always, always go through your supervisor first on any issues. Going around the system tends to leave a bad taste in management's mouth when employees do that.

3. EMAIL: used a lot now, in my opinion too much in the office setting. Be careful of getting too comfortable with expressing opinions and thoughts through email, do it in person instead. Why do I say this? Because email gives you a false feeling of detachment - you are not speaking directly in front of someone so, just by nature, you can tend to feel you can say things you wouldn't normally say face to face. If the person says, "just send me an email" say, no, I'd rather meet in person, this is very important to me. Plus, whatever you type in email can be held against you indefinitely! Whenever I communicate in email, I look silly but I say it out loud to make sure it comes across in the right way before I send it.

4. Ask a lot of questions, don't be afraid to get clarification. Now, on that same note, corporations like to see and retain people who can "hit the ground running".

5. Before complaining about something that you don't find right or does not work, think of the alternatives you can offer before you present your complaint. If you cannot think of a way to fix it, it's best to state, "I've encountered this problem and I need help in finding a way to fix it. I've thought of some scenarios, but I would like your input." Corporate likes critical thinkers who are action-oriented.

Those are a few just off the top of my head....

Congrats to all of you, and have fun on your new jobs! I went to bankers hours about 8 months ago for the first time in my life, felt weird at first. I had never had to drive in rush hour traffic to get to work!!

also, more people are off on weekends, I used to never run errands on weekends so shopping, going to the cleaners, etc. takes longer. Good luck!!:D

Congrats Mary. Having the psych background will be the best asset you could have. The insurance stuff would be new to any nurse---but nurses are so much better at figuring unique ways to assist our patients. You will probably read this after your first day--so enjoy yourself.

:)

So Mary, how was it? I thought of you today while I was having a really nice day at work. Hope you had the same :D

I LOVED IT!!!!! It's going to be great! I really can't wait to get started on my own but have to go through all the orientation and training stuff of course. Worked alongside a really great nurse today, who obviously loves her job and was so patient with and informative to me. Everyone there seems passionate about their work - haven't experienced that in a work environment in a long time. Feels SOOO good.

LasVegasRN - thanks for you input - I will keep everything you said in mind.

Renee, Dennie, Zudy, Zumalong, and Heather - ALL you guys are great. Thanks for the votes of confidence and all the support.

You know the thing that just hit me today, that makes me proudest of what I will be doing? I will be acting as a healthcare advocate for ALL the brave and wonderful men and women (as well as their families) that serve or have served to defend our country. Could I possibly have a more honorable job? WOW!
