Is there anyone starting NS in the Fall of 2008 with me?
I'm taking nutrition this summer, though it is not required and I'm thinking that I will review A&P.
It is surprising that nutrition is not a required course for your program. Nutrition is such a cornerstone, perhaps thee cornerstone of good health and the scant attention paid to it by western medicine amazes me. The nutrition course required by the program I was accepted to (but also by other programs around here) is pretty basic. I took it 20 years ago and it is being accepted! Admittedly, I am not fighting it, and haven't took upon myself to redo it, but have since taken additional and varied nutrition classes. I once toyed becoming an RD. Even in the hospital, the food served to patients is often nutritionally marginal, at best. How can people get well on that?
Good for you to take it it without being required. I think that is great.
Good luck and best wishes, congrats on your acceptance.
HI EVERYONE!! JUST JOINED AND VERY EXCITED:hgu: I JUST STARTED NURSING SCHOOL ON MAY 19. THIS IS A NURSING ESSENTIALS CLASS AND WE HAVE CHECK-OFFS ONCE A WEEK. OUR FIRST ONE WAS VITAL SIGNS AND I AM SO HAPPY I PASSED!!! MY NEXT ONE IS THIS FRIDAY ON STERILE DRESSINGS. i HAVE TO SAY I AM QUITE NERVOUS. YOU ALSO HAVE TO PASS A DOSAGE CALCULATIONS MATH TEST WITH 100%, WHICH THANKS TO JESUS ABOVE I DID LAST FRIDAY. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THOSE ENTERING THE BIG NURSING PROGRAM!!! I AM SURE WITH ALL OF THIS SUPPORT EVERYONE WILL DO GREAT:yeah:

I'm not as cool as all that. :wink2:
I meant to say that it is not required as a prerequisite. If I don't take it this summer, then I will have to take it as part of my program next spring. I think I prefer to get it out of the way, rather than have 19 credits in the spring including what are rumored to be our hardest clinicals of the program.
I too feel that nutrition is very important. I have had a personal interest in it for about a few years myself. I have not taken any formal classes in it, but I have done a lot of research. In fact, my nutritional understanding is what finally got me on the right track for getting back to and maintaining a healthy weight. I feel better and look great and I don't sit around obsessing about food anymore.
Wow, I can't believe that I totally missed this post for this long...lol!I too am starting NS this Fall and am so glad to see so many folks starting this Fall too.
I am an "oldie" too, starting this journey late in life. I am the poster child for all those students that think they can wait to go to college.
I tell my daughter all time that I don't want her to end up like me changing careers midlife. My excuse at the time was I didn't have the funds, when I was in high school no one talked to me about college or encouraged me to go or ever told me anything about grants/scholarships. I Didn't have the funds because there were just all of those other things I wanted to spend my money on instead of education.

Now I am a single mom returning to school, I know it would have been so much easier when I was young, but I don't think that I would have had the drive to succeed like I do now. (that hindsight 20/20 thing!
)
Anyway, I look forward to chatting with everyone throughtout this wonderful journey and good luck to all!

I can so relate to what you say. I just turned 40 in April, and even though I have regrets about not doing this sooner, I know that I am a much better student then I would have been right out of high school.
I am a married mom with 5 kids 4 are still at home. My oldest will be 22 this month and my youngest is 2. I start my school's PT ASN program 8/25. I have orientation 7/21. We sign up for our classes then the letter says. Oh, and I'm from Indiana. I am done with Pre reqs but have 3 co reqs left. Advanced ANP, Micro, and critical thinking left to do with the nursing core.
It will be fun to have so many to share this with that know exactly what the other person is going through.
Thanks for starting this thread
WishNHope, congrats for your determination and hard work. Your daughter will benefit from seeing such dedication. I think age is relevant. If you're heart is in it, then you are going to most likely do well and most of the older students do very well because they are more mature and know their purpose for going to school -- to get the education (especially when you're paying for it - right?!).
One question -- I know what a pre-req is but what is a co req? I thought they were the same? Are you going for your BSN or ASN? Maybe you mentioned it in your post, I'm not sure.
Best of luck to you and all of us out there starting in the fall!
I too will start in the fall. I am from michigan if you couldnt guesse. ha ha I will start in august and am looking forward to it. I cannot wait to start. I have turned into quite the nerd. ha ha. Married with children and working part time. I am ready for the challenge. I would like to get into my books soon. Planning on going to the school this week sometime to get the numbers off the books to try to get them cheaper somewhere other than the book store. I love this site and am soo happy I found all of you. TTYS
nurse2b2010 ,
Thank you. My kids hear all the time how valuable an education is, I think it is sinking in. My 17 year old has visited some colleges, but is still unsure where she wants to go. she will only be a junior, so she has a little time left.
We had pre reqs to complete before we could apply to the program. Which were the usual. ENG 111, ANP 101 &102, PSY 101. We also have co reqs which we have to complete before we finish the program. I tried to take as many as I could before I started NS. We have some choice in choosing which co reqs we do. But,the categories and choices are limited.
The co reqs I have completed so far are MAT 111, SOC 111, ENG 112.and COM 102.
I am starting the ASN program. It is a brand new program. They have been doing LPN for a long time. I go to Ivy Tech and there are 3 combined campuses in our region. We used to have to go to Kokomo for ASN classes. But now Logansport & Wabash both have Part time ASN classes. I am going to Logansport.
I am glad that it is PT because I work midnight 12 hr shifts Sat-Mon. It is a very easy job with a lot of down time. I work with dd individuals doing community living. I work in only 1 home with 3 girls. They are extremely high functioning, but all have physical disabliites for example, one is blind.
I really like my job. I have thought about trying to stay in this field when I get my nursing degree. It does give me some experience although not a lot towards nursing. I pass meds and do progress notes etc.
Sorry, didn't set out to write a book:wink2:
I'm so excited to get going.
I will be starting in the fall. 8/27 08 to be exact.
I am doing fairliegh dickenson university 2nd degree accelerated part time BSN program.
I still live at home, not married, no children.
Classes 3 nights a week.
I plan to keep my full time job as b/c the fall semester I will only have 4 classes which should be managemable.
Cant wait to start
I'm excited as well! My classes will begin on August 18, and we have orientation on Aug. 15. My classes are in the afternoon (between 2-6) and my clinicals are on Wed. and Thur. from 3-8PM. We had the choice of morning clinicals (7AM-12PM) or evening clinicals. I would like to work while in school, as I am a single mom and bills do need to be paid, but I don't know how I'm going to do that yet. I'm told that we need a lot of extra time to practice labs and of course study.

I received my acceptance letter from Baptist School of Health Professions San Antonio this past Saturday. RN program to start on August 25! Will take CPR class this Thursday, get up to date with my shots next Tuesday, and have processing day June 28. Orientation will be held August 20-22. I can't wait!
What a great way to start off NS!
