Hi, it looks like there are quite a few of us "oldies" making a career change! I needed to do something different than legal secretary which I had done for over 20 years. Also, I wanted something where I felt it was rewarding and nursing seemed to fulfill that from all my research into the field. Of course, I am just getting started and have so much to see and learn, but I am excited and look forward to it. I started school when I was 48 and will also be 51 by graduation. I am a mother of 4 grown children (2 mine and 2 stepchildren) and a grandmother of 3 (1 will be 2 in October; 1 newborn to come in Oct; and 1 newborn to come in mid-August!). Life is good! God Bless!

Oh, I am also taking A & P this summer! Busy Busy! :yeah:

It really is great to hear of others changing careers at this age. When I started considering it, I thought I had waited too long and was too old to learn new tricks. Guess that is not really true! They seem a little harder to learn, but having a lot of life under my belt has really helped keep my perspective and my goals in sight! God Bless us all in our endeavors!

I know what you mean about feeling that it might be too late to start something new. I felt the same way, but I knew that if I didn't start I'd still be wondering several years later down the road. Now, here I am getting ready to actually start nursing school after spending a year to get my pre-reqs out of the way. I hear that nursing school is very difficult and intense so hopefully we will be able to learn from each other and lean on each other! Here's to a great summer and great start in the fall! :D

I'm part of the older nursing student crowd. I'm 43 and will be 45 when I graduate. You know...I can either be 45 and a nurse or 45 and not a nurse....either way I'll still be 45!! Might as well be doing something new...

Good for you! We can do it!!! :typing:up:

Just got my acceptance letter. Starting Fall 2008 at Hopkisville, KY!!:D

Congrats! :yeah:

Specializes in C-EFM, L&D/Postpartum/AP/PACU.

I am starting an Accelerated BSN program on August 25th. We have an orientation on the 24th, but it sounds like it is more of a reception than anything.

I just finished A&P this spring. I'm taking nutrition this summer, though it is not required and I'm thinking that I will review A&P. I did well in it, but I'm already forgetting stuff and I want it to be fresh in the fall.

I suppose I count as an oldie too. I will be 37 the day after school starts. I have a husband and three boys (6, 3, & 3) who will stay behind where we currently live due to my husband's job. It will be so hard to be away, but we can't afford for my husband to quit and be out of work while I'm in school, nor can I afford to worry about child care while I'm in school.

Fortunately, my school has a very generous academic calendar. I'll be home for about a week at Thanksgiving and a month over Christmas, 11 or 12 days on spring break, and we don't have summer classes so I will be home during that time, hopefully working a student internship at a local university hospital that has student nurse positions.

Good Luck! I just finished up microbiology in the spring and I really enjoyed it. This may sound geekie but, now that I am older I really think that I appreciate learning and have found the biology classes very interesting. I really didn't like school the first time around. Also, I believe that most mature students (the ones I have met anyway) have learned many life lessons that will enhance our nursing abilites when we do graduate. Go Oldies!

Wow, you have a lots of grandbabies, God bless. Someday, I hope to have many grandbabies too. I just need my three sons to find that special someone and settle down. My oldest is 24 and will be moving out of the house in August, and I have two more sons who are in college, one is going for nursing and the other is going for power plant technology (I am not even sure what that is). As for me, I am doing a complete change in careers, I have been the banking/mortgage field for the last 20 years. I can not wait to be a nurse, I am really looking forward to a more meaningful career.

Good luck to you. It must have been a hard decision to leave your children for a while to pursue your nursing career.
