I have been getting really bad arch pain lately. I have Sanitas brand clogs and haven't had much luck. Dansko's don't do it for me either and neither do most Nurse Mates shoes. Does anyone have a good non-clog recommendation for a nursing shoe for 12.5 hour hospital shifts that has worked well to help support their arches and reduce pain?
Did this make your morning foot pain go away? When I first get out of bed in the morning I have severe pain for the first few steps.....
Oh yes. One of the sources of pain in plantar fascitis is the "curling" of the tendon while you sleep. Then when you put your weight on the foot first thing in the morning, the tendon is forced back into a flatter position. Stretching your foot, both flexion and extension, before you get out of bed helps tremendously.
There are also devices that keep your foot in flexion while you sleep so that the tendon doesn't curl. I don't know how well they work.
I'd suggest a podiatrist. They can figure out what the issue is and give you some ideas about treating it. Physical therapy may help as well -- there are exercises you may be able to do to help. As for shoes -- you want something comfortable and supportive that fits YOUR foot. Plan on spending $100-150 at a small store with good customer service. As soon as you learn what works for you, you can shop for deals online. Everyone will recommend what works for THEM. (I like Danskos myself -- stainless steel arch support and good alignment for my knees, hips and back. But your milage will vary.) What you need to find is what works for YOU.
Orthotics were a life saver. Custom can be expensive and not covered. Now you can buy the "average orthotics" and try to see if that fits your needs. Dr. Andrew Weill has a brand of shoes called "orthaheel" shoes with the average orthotic built in. I use them for sandles where I can't use my custom orthotics.
Stretching exercises, icing insole down for 20 mins 3xday, orthotic insert, New Balance sneakers are what my Podiatrist recommended.
Please see a Podiatrist to be properly assessed, diagnosed and treatment plan developed--well worth your peace of mind and pain gone!
