Any Miami Dade College students going for the acceler. or Generic option fall 2009?

Published

I am currently at Miami Dade College fulfilling prerequisites in order to apply for the Nursing program that starts fall 2009. I'd like to be in touch with other career changers who after getting a bachelor's in a non-nursing field decided to pursue the program at Miami Dade College.

Thanks for your interest!

Whats the stress this time? DO you think you are in the same position or better or worse than before. Stay encouraged. Dont give up! Have you tried applying to other schools or anything as a back up? Mercy has a phenomenal program...but its an LPN but they do really well. Im looking at some other options myself. Just as a back up. Never know where the cards will fall. Again stay encouraged. Its a long way until june/july.

Well I am on the same boat this time around, I took 3 classes to raise my GPA, all my pre-req are done, but I got a B on the microlab, the final practical was 43 questions fill in the blank and that did not help me at all I got an 88, the points is my GPA stay the same instead of going up after killing my self the entire semester, I am not taking no summer classes for that reason, I get all stress out because I aim for no less than a A, imaging if I get less and it goes down!. I did check into an other school but they are to expensive, I am thinking about LPN too maybe after getting the license getting in transitional is faster.

I know this can all be really discouraging but we stay faithful and it seems you have really put a great deal of effort. I wish admissions did interviews or something so that they got a better picture of the applicant instead of just the GPA which does not tell the whole story. It tells a good one but definately not the whole one. The LPNs seem to have it easier in terms of transitional program and getting in and they also have great clinical experience going in. There are many roads to the same goal so keep your options open. PM if you want more info on Mercy program though. I have people who are there now.

Maybe less people will apply this year~! I know it will be less next time since they have to take the TEAS test.

Aw olofin1 I hope you get in. :/ Yea if MDC did interviews then you would get in for sure... I mean your perseverance is amazing! And that is something every student nurse and RN needs to have!!! So don't give up. Have you applied for FIU or BCC? If I don't get in this semester then I may finish my AA(I only have 36 credits I think). But I really want to go to MDC than any other school...

Hey everyone,

First time posting at Allnurses.com.

I, as well, am applying to MDC for their Accelerated program.

I have a previous degree from UF, but cum gpa from there is whack.

I finished all my prerequisites this past Spring. My natural sciences gpa is 3.75, so I'm hoping that's good enough to get in this fall.

I've talked to the Dean's of the generic program and the AO option who both were very pleasant (especially Violeta).

The department told me they should be notifying students mid-June regarding acceptance/denial.

In the meantime, my desire is to stay positive, hopeful, and make wise decisions towards a nursing career.

Questions: Has anyone heard anything for this fall yet? Are there any other people applying for the accelerated program

While I'm waiting, I am researching other Florida schools and out-of-state schools as well. I applied to FAU and Barry and was denied by both.

Looking forward to hearing from others!

God Bless!

Hello NikkiNJesus,

I, too, graduated from UF with a poor GPA and have applied to both the generic and accelerated program @ MDC. I previously applied to the accelerated program, but did not get in w/ a 3.80 GPA. Therefore, I took 2 additional courses to boost my GPA to a 3.85. Hopefully the GPA standard for the Fall will be lower than it was for Spring '10 and hopefully, we will both get in. Btw, welcome to allnurses!!!!!

Go Gators:yeah:

Welcome to allnurses. :) I haven't heard of anything from mdc yet. I applied to another school and was accepted but its so expensive. MDC is my first choice now. Good luck to all of us. :)

POMAKYYA I can't believe you didn't get in with a 3.80. Competition is crazy.

on eagles wings,

I couldn't believe I didn't get in either. I went to advisement the first day of school to inquire why and was told I missed entrance by 3 slots...apparently, the race was really close....3.85 and higher! So this time around, I figured I would reapply to the AO as well as apply to the GO. Hope you get in as well:)

Hey guys just checking I am praying and see what happens this time around.....I will be traveling around that time that we are suppose to get letters so let's see

@Pomakkya,

Wow! Denied with a 3.8 gpa?! That's crazy. Looks like I'm hoping for a miracle. Was your gpa cumulative or just natural sciences? (i.e. did the gpa you applied with before include your UF gpa? or was it only your prerequisites needed for admission to mdcc? )

To everyone else,

What other schools have you applied to or will apply to? So far, in my research there are some pretty awesome out-of-state schools e.g. Jefferson University [ABSN + MSN in 2 years], Oklahoma City [guaranteed acceptance in ABSN with all prereks completed], Lady of the Lake College [10 mth ASN program], and others. I am also contemplating applying to Palm Beach State college for their full-time generic nursing program. Would love to hear from you all your other school options and back up plans.

Later!

That Jefferson U program sounds really nice... but really tough! I heard its good to work as an RN for a while before getting your MSN because you are going to need the experience to succeed... but I don't know anything about how the program does it so I don't know. But make sure you check that out. :) I applied to UM in Feb. and got accepted to their traditional BSN. I was suuuper happy but I was really hoping for a University scholarship at least for the first semester. I am the kind of person that cannot hear the words loan or debt. I am traumatized by them lol. So I said forget it and am hoping to get accepted into MDC... cheap and safe is the way to go lol.
