Hi all,
I would like to know if there are any nurses who make at or over 100k per year just working as an RN - not CRNA, Advanced Practice etc., just bedside nursing... and how do you do it, overtime, premium pay etc. or any other combination that works for you and where are you located? I know east and west coasters tend to make more. I'm asking because I want to increase my income so that I can knock out some student loans before going back to school and piling more on. Thanks for any and all replies.
Thanks for the clarification then. Is that $1400 for a one-room apt.?Sorry but I'm not understanding this question above. Are you asking "what salaries do experienced RN's in SF make?"
It is indeed frustrating the discrepancies in salaries from place to place.
But you are right. The middle class is being pushed out of the real estate market here in certain parts of Florida do to the high cost.
No. A 1 BR apt probably goes for $800 or so. So that's a $700 difference, or about $4.50 per hour for a full-time nurse. Not even close to being enough to justify such a huge difference in pay.
Yes, my question was, if new grads in San Francisco are making $46/hr, what are experienced nurses making?
I sold my house in CT last year after 14 years of waiting for my mortgage to be right-side up again. I have no plans to buy a house again, certainly not at the inflated prices that the California speculators have caused in the Arizona housing market. I really don't want to be making mortgage payments when I'm 78. When my teenager finishes HS, I'm going to pay cash for a trailer to hang my hat and then go traveling.
Some contract highlights. Northern California includes the SF bay area, east to Sacramento, and south to San Jose. I think the higher rates are for the San Francisco area. I'm told Kaiser NoCal is the same for all facilities.

Many smaller area cities have permit parking only. You have to use a meter or park in a lot. Residents get free permits and may apply for temporary permits for visitors.
People who work in some cities may purchase a permit for a fee.
My daughter knows paople who live in vans and RVs, shower at a gym, and work in these cities parked near work.

Thanks for the link. Almost enough to make me want to California. Almost.
By trailer, I meant mobile home. A permanent address, more or less, for between travel assignments. Not an RV. I wonder about RVs...they cost more than a house, don't they? But do RV owners have to trade them in every few years because they're a house on wheels?
15.00/hour. They make 12.00/hr ringing clothes at Dillards. Are you serious?
No, wait....it was actually $15.25 they offered me lol! This was with having my license almost a year, and working at my previous job for 8 months. They offer such low pay here because they can. One company owns like a ton of hospitals here....so they know all the nurses are going to have to work there...so they can keep pay low. I did quit that job when I found out how much work it was and I was not getting paid for that much work and stress.
Almost makes me want to fly down to San Francisco from Seattle just to work the weekend shift. Someone could leave Friday and come home Monday. Has anyone ever considered it?
One of the TV stations in the Bay Area did a news story on SF City firefighters who do just that - live in rural Oregon, Chandler (AZ), and other cities - swap shifts to work a whole bunch in a row, and then fly home for 8-10 days. Here is the link:

Per diem nurses (no benes) with the State of Connecticut Dept of Mental Health make $49.75/hr for 3rd shift. Great pay gig for mostly passing meds and dodging punches/kicks.
Housing cost is ridiculous here, although. $200K for an ordinary 1,000 sq ft ranch style home. Condos are currrently even more expensive than stand alone homes.
