  1. I have a BA (non-nursing) and finished my ADN last year. I'm glad I went that route. It was extremely cheap and provided an excellent education. I am now about to begin my masters to become a nurse practitioner. Also, now that I'm working part-time during school I am getting tuition assistance towards my masters. Getting my ADN didn't hurt me a bit!
  2. I think it's a great idea and have considered it myself. It seems much more convenient than an adult family home where you would have staffing issues around the clock. I agree that you should not get involved with a partner. It's unnecessary and could really complicate things. Compare a partnership to a marriage where assets are combined and separating is like a divorce.... Also, a bachelor's degree is not necessary at all. I have a BA in economics and a minor in business and all I learned in school was theories. I've done my husband's books for years and nothing I learned in school helped me. I think you either have business sense or you don't. If accounting is difficult for you, hire a bookkeeper - they're not that expensive. In my state, to get started in business all you have to do is fill out a master business application and register with secretary of state. It's not rocket science. I'm sure a bookkeeper could help you with that as well. Let me know how it turns out and good luck!
  3. I'm in the same boat. Someone please respond and let us know what we're in for with this test!
  4. I'm looking at this program also. Did you find some info that you could pass along?
  5. I think it depends on the school. Both the University of Washington and Washington State University allow this option, but Pacific Lutheran University does not (at least not yet). The safest thing to do is check the website of the school you're looking at. The trend seems to be heading that direction. If you find a school that allows this, it's definitely the cheapest way to go. Four years ago when I was looking at PLU's direct entry masters, the cost was over $40k.
  6. I'm not sure about the entry level masters at the UW, but the regular MN no longer requires the GRE. This requirement was just recently dropped. Have you thought about just getting an ADN at a community college? That's what I did. I have a BA in economics and got my ADN at a CC. If money is an issue, this is a much cheaper way to go. The tuition is less than $800/qtr. Now I can use my BA and my ADN together and apply for the masters program at the UW. Also, the hospital where I work will pay some of the tuition. About 4 years ago I checked into the entry level masters program at PLU, but it was too expensive and too intense. They go for 15 months straight - even through the summer. The CC was cheaper and I was able to spend the summers with my kids. Just another option for you to consider;)
  7. I just graduated with my RN in June and have been offered two jobs to choose between. The first job is on the med/renal floor of a busy hospital. I know I won't enjoy this job (full patient care with no CNA's), but I know I will learn a ton the first year and that this job will open the door to other positions within the hospital. The second job offer is in a lap band clinic. I would be doing the fills on the lap bands (putting saline into the port to tighten the band) and doing follow up appointments with the patients. I have kids and this job is M-Th 8-4:30 and 8-12 on Fridays. This position has a lot of autonomy and I would actually enjoy going to work each day. The problem is that these skills are so specific that they really aren't transferrable to another job. It's the only clinic of its kind for miles. What if, after 5 years, I'm tired of this job and want a change? Could I get on with the hospital then? I would have lost all my skills by then. Please give me some advice about this decision. I haven't been sleeping. THANKS!
  8. Is ICU the most lucrative specialty for travelling?
  9. Almost makes me want to fly down to San Francisco from Seattle just to work the weekend shift. Someone could leave Friday and come home Monday. Has anyone ever considered it?
  10. I'm a nursing student in Olympia so I've only seen it from the clinical perspective. I think they're both fine. CMC is smaller and at least from my experience in clinicals seemed a little slower than St. Petes. The good thing is that if you find you don't like one hospital, you can always move to the other. I know people that work at both. A friend of mine just graduated and was offered a position at CMC in the ICU. Good luck...you'll love Olympia!
  11. I have a B.A. and am in an ADN program. It took me 3 quarters to get my prerequisites (chem, A&P I & II, Micro, statistics, etc.) since a lot of the classes need to be taken consecutively and could not be taken at the same time. I just finished my first year of nursing school and could take the LPN exam now if I wanted to. I will have the summer off and then will start the last 3 quarters (RN portion) in the fall. So, it will take a total of 3 years to get my ADN and that's after 4 years of college! I don't know of any faster programs except the accelerated BSN programs, and you're right - they cost a fortune! If I want to go on for my masters I can use my BA and ADN to apply without a BSN so it works for me. The program is dirt cheap ($800 per quarter) and I get summers off to spend with my kids. Good luck...
  12. My sister in law is a hygienist and makes $38/hour. There are some in the Seattle area that make $50/hour. She works 3 days a week and has full benefits. She also picks up extra hours for another dentist whenever she wants them. Hygienists are in HUGE demand around here and can get work whenever they want. The hours are great. I considered it because of all this, but I just can't see myself doing that for the rest of my life!
  13. Corvette Guy: You're going to love it here. I live in Olympia and my kids are in the Tumwater school district. Do you have a place to live yet? Do you have kids? I'm in nursing school right now.
  14. Hello and thanks for the reply. The respiratory therapist is performing the treatment. I need to know what the nurse would need to do before, during and after the procedure.
  15. I'm hoping someone can help me with the following: State the responsibility of the nurse before, during, and after the administration of respiratory therapy. Thanks so much!
