  1. In my personal experience, cost of living is much higher and wages much lower, but maybe it will work out better for you than me. Really though, Utah is a nice place, I didn't mean to sound harsh.
  2. Well Said ElkPark~ an MA that I work with is considering Everest College, to the tune of $85K!!!!!!!!!!!! That is predatory lending in my opinion, as student loans are stuck with you FOREVER! sigh
  3. Expect a paycut if you are used to CA wages. I moved to Utah three years ago , and still only make my new grad base pay from Oregon
  4. Hi there, I know exactly how you feel. I spent so much time trying to make sure I had all my ducks in a row, and I knew that I wanted to start my RN/BSN program right after I graduated and go full-time. Here in Oregon, you can see your RN license online in less than a week, and I had my license in my mail in about 5 days after I had passed the N-CLEX (Sorry, that not all states are that quick ) My RN-BSN program let us be "provisionally admitted", as there were two new grads in our co-hort. I was the only one who was going to go full-time though. Then, we gained "full-admission" as soon as we sent a copy of our licenses to the school. Have you actually talked to the dean of the program, or just the admissions office? Good luck- It can be done :-) I started my RN/BSN program in Sept of 05, and Finished in May of 06, after completing my ADN in June of 05. I'm now in my second semester of a WHNP program
  5.  I am moving out of state and sadly, all my precious library of nursing and medical textbooks will not be making the journey. There is only so much room on that moving van. However, I would love to donate them to an organization that might be able to ship them overseas to nurses in Iraq or Africa or Indonesia- or anywhere. I am talking about basic nursing texts, care plan books, clinical skills books. They are circa 2003 or earlier, so they are not too out of date. However, I am positive that current nursing students in the US are using more updated versions. If you have any info or contacts, please post them for me. I am in Oregon. Thanks so much
  6. Hi There- Well, I have taken my BLS the last two times from them. They were fine. But, I personally have not taken any online versions. My friends have taken the online ACLS and liked it.
  7. Hi there- I'm an Oregon L/D RN and trying to narrow down my choices for CNM programs. So far, UofU is my #1 choice, but I would love to pick the brain of a current student if anyone is willing. My main questions: 1) Did you take any of the general courses as a non-matriculated student prior to starting the program? This has been recommended, but I am curious about how many you took at one time, which ones, and how the financial issues were worked out. If you did take them, how soon prior to starting the program did you take them? 2) Were/are you able to work as an RN during the program? If so, would you be willing to suggest a great unit that is understanding of Masters students. I would need to start working as soon as we moved to SLC from Oregon, prior to school starting, possibly as soon as next summer. 3) I am studying right now for the GRE, what score do I *really* need to get on this insane test? 4) Are you in the CNM, WHCNP, or CNM/WHCNP program? Any advice or info is totally welcome :-) You can PM me, email me, whatever. Thanks so much! About me: 32, married, three kids, three cats, five guinea pigs and now a dwarf bunny . L/D RN who can't wait to go back to school, but is terrified all the same.
  8. I'm 31 now, and have a 14 year old son, and 10 and 6 year old daughters. Yes, I was a senior in high school(17) when I became a mom. Was this the best age? No, but being a young mom has its advantages too. Even though it was definitely a struggle, I will be in my forties when my children leave the nest, and I will have that time in my life to travel, work more, and have more freedom. On the downside, it has taken me much longer to complete college, and I am still in the process of buying my first home. I don't think there really is a "best age" for starting a family, because raising children is the hardest job you will ever have regardless. However, I sometimes wonder about parents starting families in their late 40s, early 50s and wonder how well it is working for them.
  9. http://www.marquiscompanies.com/snf_what.cfm http://www.marquiscompanies.com/employment/index.cfm?act=res&jbId=281&detail=true&type=single&locId=22 I know that Marquis seems to recruit new grads and they have a mentorship program for RNs (not sure about LPNS). They have quite a few locations in the Portland area. Good Luck!
  10. I would have to see the original problem you were setting up to know. Will you post it, and I will help you.
  11. If you have the problem all set up, there is one easy way to know what to to. Multiply all the top numbers together, and then divide that huge number one at a time by each of the bottom numbers. It always works - as long as you already have the conversion factors all set up correctly first. I also cancel out each g/mg/min/hr factor as I go as well. . I took four terms of chemistry, three of which I struggled through only because I wanted my BSN, so I completely understand how you feel. Good Luck! Let me know if that just confuses you more
  12. Hi There*~ I graduated with my ADN June 11, and passed NCLEX with 75 on June 30. I am admitted to a full time RN/BSN program that I will start in Sept and will graduate in May 06. Hence why I am searching high and low for a PT RN job. But I'm not getting very far. sigh. I am also impatient, as it has only been about a week since I started expanding my job search from the "one" hosptial that I am hoping to work for. Any advice is totally welcome. I know that most employers do NOT want a new grad at PT status, but there is no possible way that I can juggle full time with full time BSN completion. There is a reason to my madness. I have a scholarship for my BSN, with the stipulation that I remain a full-time student. Due to location, I chose to complete my ADN and then transfer for the last year only vs. all four years at the school an hour away for the BSN. After gaining experience as an RN, I will be attending a FNP program (hence the need for the BSN). One year from now, I will be free game for any shift, anywhere.. But until then what the heck am I to do? Has anyone been in this situation?
  13. Hi there- I searched allnurses.com and so hopefully there isn't another thread somewhere. I am seriously considering Gonzaga's FNP program. It's offered at a distance via DVD and email, PT and FT. I'm working on my RN/BSN right now and will finish that next May. I would love to hear from anyone that has attended Gonzaga and could tell me more about it from a student's point of view. It sounds so good on paper, but you know how that can be :thankya: Thanks!
  14. I heard that Salem Hospital is recruiting for BSN grads- they are going for MAGNET status and they need more BSNs to achieve that accreditation. :idea:Salem is about 45 miles from Portland.
  15. :) It's nice to know I'm not alone. I have stopped buying soda (which is really hard for me), and I actually went to the gym yesterday and had a great time working out. Maybe we should all start a Nursing school survivor weight loss program (Then we could sell it on infomercials -Make a video of us all dancing in our scrubs and waving bedpans in the air. Transferring each other in and out of wheelchairs for added arm and back workouts.) :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle OK, sorry, back to reality now. Have a great day !
