Hey y'all. I work on a med-surg floor. I've been there about 3 years.
Am I the only one that gets excited about the sick patients and codes? Now I don't want MY patient to code. But I just love the adrenalin rush of taking care of super sick patients. Am I alone?
Maybe I need to work in the ER or ICU! haha! I just think it is so exciting when you have to move fast, think hard, and put everything you know together to save lives. :redbeathe

I am addicted to adrenalin. That is why I like airplanes, boats, scuba diving, and why I went to paramedic school. I enjoy the rush of being a paramedic, just can't survive on the pay. I could not handle LTC, PT or the like. Give me the blood and guts. Nursing is so cool because there are so many different areas that you can go into. Different strokes for different folks. If adrenalin could be detected on a drug panel, I would be in big trouble.

yep! me!! that is what attracted me to the er in the first place. it is also why i am leaving med surg and will start my new ed job next week. my current med surg floor feels like ltc but fast paced. i cannot take working there any longer! in fact, i think i am going to call myself off tonight!

I love it as well. I am an LPN so none of the hospitals will of course hire me right now, so I volunteer at the ER. No one seems to understand that the blood & guts and crisis situations are just perfect to me. So until I hit the lotto and can go back to school I will only be able to observe..

Think about a move to ER. I came to ER from case management (a total lack of adrenalin, other than the kind that comes with extreme frustration and anger!) and didn't think I'd be able to move fast enough to keep up. But I love it! Its zero to 60 in the time it takes for a call to come across the HERN. Don't think I can ever go back!

I am not an adrenaline junkie at all.
A good day in SICU is 2 chronic patients trying to get weaned off the vent or patients who transfer out.
This frees up the real adrenaline junkies to take patients likely to code.

adrenaline junkie present here---so i'm guessing, it's better for me to get a job in a fast paced and highly charged department like in ER, trauma or ICU?

Yes and I worked for years in one of the largest trauma centers in the nation for years. I could not wait to get to work every day. It was the best job I ever had. But you had to be a young person to do it cause you ran your butt off the entire 3 years that you were there. I had to have my daily FIX. It was a county hospital. We saw about 300-400 patients per day and it was great. Lots of great stories to tell my friends.
