Anxious... Will I have my job if not hired for new job?

Published

I am going to try to make this as short as possible. Here is my situation. I interviewed for a position within the same hospital that I currently work for. The interviewing manager asked me if I had told my current manager that I was applying, I replied with no. The interviewing manager then asked me to tell her because she was going to contact her for a reference. So I told her. A few days later, my manager approaches me and asks me how interested I am in the new position because she needs to contact HR for my replacement if I am going to take the new job. I told my manager then that I was unsure and couldn't commit 100% at this time because I hadn't been offered the job yet. My manager told me that she had spoken transfer dates with the other manager so I will more than likely be offered the position according to her. I then told my manager I still didn't feel comfortable committing without an offer, but I was interested in the new position so she could take that information and do what she needed to do. This all occurred middle of last week. I have not heard anything from the interviewing manager or HR as of yet and my manager already contacted HR to start the hiring process to replace me!!

I don't know what to do. What if they don't call and offer me the job? Will I still have my original job? Do you think that I will be offered the position based on this situation?

Sounds to me like you may have been had. Although it would be difficult to construe your request for a transfer into a quit, I would not put anything past an employer. At any rate, if I were you I woud beat feet down to HR and get the real story without delay.

I agree with the previous post. You have not given a letter of resignation to the hospital, so IMO, they cannot "boot you out the door." If HR can't give you a straight answer, speak with the nurse manager of the unit to which you want to transfer. "The squeaky wheel gets the grease!"

Imagine coming into work three days from now and walking past the new nurse, your replacement, while being escorted by your old manager to HR for your exit processing. I once was in the copy room getting records ready, and a nurse that I had never seen before came into the room and introduced himself. When I came back to the nurses station I got called to the ADONs office. Guess what?

I have never had this happen so can't give very good advise except like the others, I think you should actively find out what is happening even being quite frank with the other NM rather then wait for a call.

depending on the state you live in, they may be able to "boot you out the door" for no reason. however, you may then qualify for unemployment. if that's the case, you just go to the bean counter (the person that's all about cost efficiency) at the hospital, they will hit that fan (usually), because the more people that get unemployment that worked for the hospital, the higher the unemployment insurance cost is for the hospital, $$$. if they can come up with a good/decent reason for getting rid of you, then you may not qualify for unemployment and/or the bean counter might side with them (not raise cane about wasting money).

i'd think that you're getting the job or worse you'll get cut back on hours.

Wow. I don't think as pessimistically as some, I guess. I think your manager is only attempting to keep her unit covered in a timely manner and she is basing her actions (posting for a new nurse) upon her interaction with your potential new boss.

I think you need to give it some time, maybe contact the potential new manager and let things progress without panic.

they cannot "boot you out the door."

Technically, depending on the state in which you live, they can and will. I'd be talking with the manager of the department in which you are trying to transfer ASAP! :twocents:

That's HORRIBLE! Im sorry to hear that happened to you.

I kind of had a similar situation just recently. I had informed my manager that I was seeking another job because I need to work a full-time job (I'm working 2 part-time jobs now). She was understanding and appreciated me letting her know. Well, I was taking my time because I wanted to find the right job for me (and plus I like my current jobs and didn't want to just jump into anything). I found out last week that the manager of one of the jobs I'd applied for had called my manager for a reference and disclosed to her that she planned on offering me the job. My manager accidently let it slip to me about week after she found out (she'd found out two weeks ago) because she thought the offer had already been presented, but it hadn't. She didn't ask me if I planned on accepting or anything but I told her I'd let her know when I got the official offer which ended up coming later that same day. I didn't accept the offer until today though because we had to negotiate the salary. However, while helping a friend look for a job on the company's website last Thursday, there posted was my current job :eek!

I honestly don't think my manager was being malicious or trying to push me out, but my position has been hard to fill in the past and stayed vacant for months before I was hired. I think she just needs to get started early on the hunt, which may also be the case for your manager. I did tell my manager today that I officially accepted the job, but didn't mention that I'd already saw her advertising my job. Actually, if the new job weren't salary, I would have filled in occasionally. I would call HR and find out if they heard anything (I did this with the job I was offered, but at the time they had not heard from the hiring manager), it won't hurt anything. Good luck.

So I heard from the hiring manager today... they have contacted human resources to offer me a job, so just waiting on them! Now just have to negotiate a salary! YAY!! Worrying like crazy for nothing!

Congratulations on the good news! (But you were not worrying for nothing. You were not being given appropriate cues concerning an outcome.)
