We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.
I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?
As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.
I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?
Your comments highlight my original concern:
You seem unable to research properly and separate science from opinion
And that makes me question what kind of nurse you are
Not basing practice on sound science and evidence-based practices is just wrong
It would be a little like an architect stating they don't really believe or need math, and are going to use an alternative method for calculating measurements
As far as your comments on flu, and handwashing being adequate protection, do you understand that flu is a droplet transmitted illness?
That it can spread up to six feet via a cough or sneeze?
Wash you hands until they are raw, get coughed on my a pt with flu and you have no vaccine on board and it is game over
Dear lord, modes of transmission were covered in my Nursing 1000 first ever taken course
Did you not receive this education somewhere? If so, time for you to re-up on that knowledge
Or perhaps you were too busy reading infowars during your lectures
I wanted to respond to a few things here and ask some questions. As far as "human and monkey cells", you are aware that some vaccines may be replicated in a human cell line (and could perhaps carry a small bit of genetic material) but they don't actually contain any "human cells" right? This is a myth created by poor understanding of science. Same is true for "monkey cells" myth.
Formaldehyde is a natural byproduct of the metabolic oxidation of methanol, found in most foods. The level of formaldehyde created naturally by our bodies is more than 50 fold higher than the amount in a vaccine. So if you want to avoid formaldehyde then you better stop eating most food.
Aluminum is, again, much higher in our diet than in an injection. So if you want to avoid that you will need to further your strict diet, avoid most tap water, and use cookware and utensils without aluminum.

Monkey cells a myth? Obviously you have not read vaccine inserts. Vaccine Ingredients and Manufacturer Information - Vaccines - ProCon.org

As for the formaldehyde and aluminum, I avoid it as much as possible. We are exposed to enough chemicals in our environment. I'm not going to knowingly add more to the mix.
I like how many always claim science as their reason to believe something. There is science that can prove vaccines are unsafe, and there is science that can prove vaccines are safe. It comes down to the person and what they are comfortable with. If the benefit vs. risk ratio isn't good enough, they will decline. To me, that is thoughtfully thinking about vaccination. Many just go to the doctor and do whatever they are told. When you can't sue a vaccine company for damages, a red flag goes up in my mind.
As for handwashing, yes it works! I never got the flu vac and never will. I stay at least 3 feet away from those sick and don't touch my face. If you were interested to see data, you could find it. The flu is not a scary illness. How about heart disease or cancer? Those kill more people every year than the flu ever will.
Have you ever seen the video of how far and fast a sneeze travels? That and the fact that airborne particles can stay in the air for quite some time after the exposed/infected sneezer leaves the room says that "staying at least 3 feet away" is just laughable. You may never even know there has been a compromised person in that space prior to your arriving there. What then? Are you going to hold your breath, just-in-case?
Anyone who has the ability and knowledge how to do so, could you please post the 'sneeze' video again?
Perhaps most healthcare professionals trust the CDC because they apply the scientific method and conduct extensive research in any subject before releasing an statement.
I am not one to never question something. The CDC is not God. They are a body of humans, and last I knew, humans make mistakes. I will always question everything. Just because they apply the scientific method doesn't mean that something could distort their findings. I also look at who is funding studies because if a group has a special interest in a particular study, you can bet the data will be skewed or biased. I look at things from all angles.
Let's talk about the FDA. They release drugs out to the public saying they are "safe." Later, word gets out that it has caused harm and the drug is pulled. So did science fail there? Hmmmm. Their data says it's safe, but then its not?

What kind of nurse do you plan on being if you stay at least 3' from sick people?
Flu's not scary? Have you managed a pediatric flu case yet? Didn't think so. Do you know what droplet and airborne precautions are? Didn't think so.
There isn't a vaccine for heart disease or cancer, so you can't make that comparison.
Finally, are you saying you can't use science to believe in something while using science to argue why you believe in something?

The flu is droplet not airborne. TB is airborne. Yes, 3 feet away because droplets do not travel that distance.

All the compounds that you describe as "harmful chemicals" are naturally found in the human body. We have so many chemicals that our bodies use for functioning, that you may be surprised. Heck we even have mercury, orificenic, etc; in really tiny amounts.
Perhaps all the anti vaxers should be put on community service in african countries that are struggling with crisis related to diseases that the vacciness we have currently have almost erradicated. That way they would see the suffering that having an outbreak would bring.
