another new grad that can't find work.

Published

I hate to be another new grad on here upset cause i can't find work.... but.... I CAN'T FIND WORK! i graduated in May, passed boards in July! and still nothing! honestly, i didn't think it was going to be as hard as it is to find a job! at this point i just want to cry daily :crying2:, when the phone doesn't ring with any call backs! i have dozens of applications in, i'm making follow up calls, i just don't know what else to do!

i'm sorry i just had to come on and vent a little! i'm very much becoming depressed cause i still have not gotten ONE call back yet! all i want to do is work! i'm starting to get scared i'm not going to find anything, and i have all these student loans to pay back! ugh

Where are you located?

Specializes in family practice.

You might have to move if you are desperate to find a job and pay your loans,

PA ... and in the middle of nowhere mind you.. the closest hospitals are 45 mins away... i have been applying as far out as 1.5 hr away. i'm seriously going to go nuts here soon if i can't find a job! or at least get a call back!

Honeykrown, that isn't possible at this time... i own my home, and and my husband (though he has a drive) a great job. our kids are settled into their school.... there are many hospitals within a somewhat reasonable driving distance.. i have been looking everywhere! they just are not hiring new grads! they want at least 1 year exp. or they are only hiring their own (current employees that just grad from nursing school). i just want to rip my hair out! one hospital system in metro philly area has 5 hospitals .. and only 7 RN positions open ... all require more than 3 years exp... i mean come on! what am i suppose to do!?!

Have you tried LTC and Home Health companies?

Be patient. A month after being licensed is not a long time to be searching for a job. Unfortunately, there are graduates who have been searching for jobs for six months or a year.

Apply to everywhere- not just hospitals. Try doctor offices, LTC, SNFs, home care, etc. Make sure you have a good resume and cover letter. You may have to accept a temporary, non-healthcare position until you find something as an RN. Good luck to you.

I have looked at LTC, my fear with them is, one: for an RN in this area they are mostly managment positions, and i'm honestly not sure i'm ready for that type of resonsibility. two: it also does not count as med/ surg, acute care exp. and my long term career goals are to be a critical care nurse (SICU, or ED).

i used to work for home health as an aid. most of the company's here want at least 1 year med/ surg before they will send you out in the field. i should say any that have any type of good reputation that is.

right now my only other option, other than applying for every position i am able to is wait. a couple of the big hospitals will start taking applications for their "new grad" programs again in september for this winter. i just wanted to be working by now!

i know i'm not alone, only about half of my graduating class has jobs so far, and i been hearing all over the news about other new grads in our area saying the same thing. and at the same time articles about how hospitals are so poorly staffed and blamed for 2 people dying.

Thanks Ashley! i know it hasn't been a long search yet. i'm just fustraited that i haven't even gotten one call back! i'm just praying i find something soon!

LTC does count as RN experience and it will further your long term goal of becoming a critical care nurse a lot better than not working. My previous employer shut down their new grad program but is hiring young nurses off LTC TCUs.

I was a home health/hospice aide for a year. There are a wide variety of home health companies out there. You could find something that fits your skills and helps pay the bills. And you would be working as an RN.

Then work! Swallow your pride and take an RN position in LTC or home health. You can still apply as a new grad this winter. Many of my classmates have taken this option.

:nmbrn:This answer is perfect. A month isn't very long. I just got a job and I graduated in Dec 2010. The right job will come for you, at the right time. I know it's hard, but keep applying and be as patient as possible. Go to places in person (to apply), call and check on the applications you have put out there. I wish you sooo much luck!!!!

Be patient. A month without a job post passing boards is not bad.
