  1. I want to thank you all for your inspiring posts! It makes me feel like this forever long job search may end sometime soon! Grad May 11’ here… passed boards in July… 100’s of applications… 1st interview this past Tuesday and one on Friday! What changed… I made up packets of my portfolio, (resume, letters of rec, research, and resolution i co-wrote) and hit the ground… walked right into the two places dressed professionally and dropped it off. Made follow up calls. like magic I finally got 2 interviews! No job offers yet, but at least it’s a start! Good luck on your hunt! I’ll be praying for you!
  2. There was a post on here a few days ago, warning of this scam. I'm sorry to all those who feel for it! Hope you get your money back! ... I wasn't contacted, but I feel very sorry for those who were!
  3. I have all my settings to private. however, I have heard that employers have ways of getting around that (not sure how true that is). But in any case, I watch what I post, only have pictures of my family and some friends, none of any drinking. I also make sure I'm not tagged in any photos that would suggest it either. Everything on my fb is about my family, and what my kids are doing and so on. So it's pretty clear that I'm a family person. How does that look to a future employer? I often have thought about that. Really I have nothing to hide, so if they feel the need to look, well look. However, what I do have a problem with, what I do on my time, is my time. I don't feel anyone should be judged on what they do outside of work (as long as it's legal). but thats just my opinion.
  4. Thanks Kamilia! that gives me hope! i have 3 applications at this one hospital right now, and a few at others at other hospitals. i just wasn't sure if it was ok to keep applying to different floors while i had some already in. but i think i'm going to, because i know for a fact they have already been interviewing for at least one of the positions. hoping something happens soon!
  5. Elkpark: Thank you for clarifying! I thought this was the case, but i was not completely certain. I am very glad I posted this, so at least I now know and so do others. honestly even though it is a liability to help, I will help (however, we found out today, his condition has deteriorated, and will not be coming home). i fully accept responsibilty for my education and training. but after knowing this I will be looking into personal liability insurance asap! for me, i became a nurse because this is my passon/ calling. and sometimes we are called to do our work in random places. i do not want to fear loosing my house because i helped someone in a store or other random place, out of the kindness of my heart, to turn around and be sued because someone is out for money. not that i'm saying most people are like that, however in today's world it happens everyday. i'm again very glad to have made this post so we can all be aware! And Thanks again for all your comments, advice and knowledge!
  6. i wish you the best of luck! with your test, and if your planning on staying done! i would! you already have made it 3 days, just keep it going me, i'm a smoker too. promised my kids and my mother-in-law i would quit when i was done school. so i have set my date, giving myself till labor day weekend then that tuesday will be my day 1. i know how hard it's going to be, because like you i enjoy smoking, but i know its better for my health. Good Luck I'll be thinking of you!
  7. "find something you love to do and you'll never work a day in your life" Confucius. The reason I became a nurse! and wow I get paid to do it! Why others choose this profession is not my problem. Just as long as they are providing quality care to their patients. Thats just how I feel!
  8. Again Thank You ALL for your advice! In the past, I would never even second guess it, I would help in a heart beat! as I know my family and friends would do the same for me. However that piece of paper changes everything! I would love to help in any way I can without personally streaching myself that is, I just wanted to know if there could be any repercussions on my license because of helping. I have always planned on getting my own liability insurance, just haven't done it yet (only been licensed about 3 weeks). I think I will contact the BON and find out what the legal stand point is on this issue, and what a cannot do and can do. If it was my family or my best friend, I never would of even asked the question, I just would have done it. but because I do not the them well, and I do not know his children at all, I wanted to make sure I cover my butt! The wife just is looking to my mom and I because she has never been through something like this before, and sadly my mother and I have way to many times, with our own family. Cancer plaguing my family is the reason I became a nurse! My own family is no stranger to caring for the dying. This is something I have been a part of since I was a child. I absolutely agree that careing for the dying is a privilege! I thank you all again for advice!
  9. Thank you all again so much for your comments and advice! Just 3 years ago my step-father passed away from cancer, and my mother and I were his care givers (by the end mom really couldn't do much of the "care" she was so emotionally drained all she could do was sit by his bedside and cry). After a very long sleepless week for me (juggling nursing school in the day, running home to see my kids for a few hours, then back to mom's to care for him, 2 weeks away from finals, so finishing up end of semester school work) we finally had hired an aid to come in at night to sit with him for a few hours so I could get some sleep. but the aid couldn't give his meds, so the first night the aid came, i was so happy i could finally go home and get a little sleep! I was preparing the meds for the night and labeling them (they had to be crushed and mixed with water in syringes, because he could no long swollow the pills) leaving my brother with instructions when to give them, and the aid came out of the room to tell me he passed. I guess this "flash back" made me question the entire medication thing. Thanks again for all your support!
  10. i am a new grad. i recently posted something about how i can not find a job. it was said to me many time beggers can't be choosers. however at this time ( a month after being licensed, not one call back yet!) i am only applying facilities i can see myself long term. why would i want to take a position in a place i want to leave, as soon as something comes along better? no, i want somewhere i can grow! i know i will hopefully start on a med/surg floor and eventually work my way to where i want to be SICU, or ED. but as a faithfull emplyee i want to be with one company for years to come! i don't want to job hop! but hey when those student loan payments start rolling in, i may have to take whatever i can find! lucky enough i have a very suportive husband that is in no big rush for me to get working, however i run the family financials and this job hunt will only last so long! to many student loans and no job = disaster waiting to happen!
  11. Thanks so much for the imput! i talked to her today, and hospice will only be there about 4 hours a day. she knows she going to need help, since she needs to work (she has already taken a lot of leave due to long hospital stays), and sleep. and generally can't do it alone, his children live to far away to help and she has none. He was dx with stage 4 cancer, a 2 months ago. the doctors didn't even know where it started untill about a month ago. sad story: they were both divorced, been together about 15 years, last year finally got engaged! he started having back pain. he went to the doc, after many tests, wrong dx's 8 months later, stage 4 cancer. they told him he had about 9 months to a year, with chemo and radiation. they got married right away! on the same day i graduated, i remember this clearly since my mom was suppose to be the maid of honor, (since the wedding had been pushed up because of the dx, my mom attended my graduation instead). then about a 2 weeks ago things got bad. he had spent the last week in the hosital, and will be coming home on hospice this week. he is confused (to the point he no longer knows who his wife is), and very fidgety, and from what the wife says, keeps trying to get out of bed. i guess i'm concerned, that the what if she goes to work, or goes to sleep, and he needs one of his meds, am i allowed to give it? i feel so bad for them, and want to help, but at the same time, i don't want to jepordize mylicense in any way!
  12. i feel, that your careers will have little impact on your marriage. i am a new RN (yet to land my 1st job) and my hubby works a pretty much 7 -3 management job in construction. we have been married now 8 years, with 3 children. we have discussed many times that realistically i'm never going to find a job 7 - 3 for the next few years. so right now i'm searching for night shift positions. he doesn't like it.. but its the name of the game if i want a job. we like other couples have had our problems, but we finally agreed: one: we have eliminated the word divorce from our marriage, it is not an option. two: we will not fight about money. we discuss it, make decisions about it but if a fight even begins to start we say ok break time from the conversation. our marriage every year gets better and better! (not to say we don't have our hard times, or fight now and then). you have been together 10 years! Congrats! my paster told us once that if you can make it 5 then you can make 10, if you make if 10 then you can make it 20 and so on. i know 2 RN's married. One and ED nurse and one in the service... He is pretty much home for 3 to 4 months and in Germany or other countrys for 6 to 8 months at a time.. they make it work. been married 12 years now. your marriage is what you make it! don't worry about statistics and what goes on outside of your home. worry about you, your husband and your child! yes it may get stressful at times. but you and him both know that crazy scheds come with the job. so be understanding. sched dates. maybe working different shifts will cut down on babysitting costs. no marriage works without communication, compromise and trust. if you have made it this far you can make it forever! :redbeathe
  13. Ok so this may be a very dumb question. A friend of my mothers husband is dying of cancer. He is coming home from the hospital soon on hospice. He is very ill, and from the sounds of it does not have much time left. His wife is a very close friend of my mothers. My mother is organizing, friends to come help the wife take care of him, and of course offered my help. Not that i don't mind helping! but I have taken care of many family members who has since passed on from cancer. However in the past, i have been family and not a licensed nurse. So I didn't know if i'm allowed to give him his meds? I know my mother's friend, but not all that well. As a now RN helping a friend, am I allowed to give him his perscribed medications? She is not paying me, so I'm not the hired RN. But it's not like they are family either. I just wasn't sure since now I'm an RN, where the legal standpoint is on this type of thing.
  14. Thanks witc! i hope you find something soon! i know it hasn't been very long yet, but i'm seeing many stories like yours, and it is making me worry! honestly, if i was "movable" or single, i would seriously consider joining the airforce. a few years ago the reserves made me an offer i almost couldn't refuse. but after my hubby and i talked long and hard about it, it was just something that wasn't for us. i know many of us new grads all over the country are in the same boat, it just really stinks! i pose another question for all the new grads that have gotten jobs. how long after submitting applications did you get a call about interviews? and is it wrong to keep applying for many jobs at the same hospital? or should i limit to a certian number for a time period?
  15. I never said i was not apply at LTC. i have been, i just stated that i have my reservations about working in one as a manager. as far of the 2 hospitals: one of them in a national owned, where the level of care has been in question and the hospital is doing everything in their power to cut corners and make $$, so no i will not apply somewhere i think my license will be in jeopardy. the other hospital yes i do have personal reasons for not wanting to work there, however if i do not find something soon, i will be applying there. and no i can not move at this time, let me just get this one straight......let me sell my house and loose a lot of $$ because of the economy to go accross country to find a job, when my husband is not guaranteed to find a job. not to mention leaving my family, and up-rooting my 3 children (that just makes complete sense) and maybe right now i am making the choice not to apply to 2 hospitals, but like as you stated, my husband does support our family at this time, i don't feel that i need to subject myself to a working enviroment that i don't agree with. sorry if you feel my post is a waste of space, like stated upbove, i'm just frustrated i'm not getting any call backs. and i know i'm not alone i was just looking for some support, and encouragement.
