And you thought a thong beneath whites was bad...

Published

A girl in my class has several surface piercings. If you don't know what that is exactly, it's when the piercer takes a stud - much like the ones used in ears, but instead of an earring back it has a little flat disc welded onto it - and makes a tiny cut in the skin, inserts the stud and voila! It looks like a diamond (cubic zirconia) is sitting on the surface of your skin - kind of like the little sparkly stud nose rings.

Anyway, a girl in my class has one of these piercings RIGHT ABOVE HER BUTT CRACK! No lie. She also insists on folding over the top band of her scrubs "to make them fit better", which shorten the top part of the scrubs which makes her butt - and her piercing - show every time she bends over. Once, a patient got a real good long look too. And the nurses at the nursing home won't even talk to her because she offended so many of the residents. Our instructor has talked to her about her pants but she still hasn't done anything about it!

I just think it's funny...and slightly annoying. I have tattoos on my arms. I ALWAYS wear a long sleeved short so that they're not showing. I also take my nose ring out before clinical. This is our school policy. It's kind of annoying that I go to such lengths to follow policy and she keeps flashing her butt to people without consequence.

So...hot pink/red/blue/polka dotted thongs beneath whites are NOT the worst thing in the world lol. I think the only thing worse than a diamond above your butt crack would be a tramp stamp LMAO.

Now I feel old. Not only did I not know what a surface piercing was, I feel disturbed over it! Right next to the spine AND the orifice? :barf01:

We thought we were such rebels sticking safety pins through our belly buttons in the 90's...

Whaaaaat???? You mean my friend and I weren't the only ones that did that?!

Excuse me, but don't all of you mean 'gluteal cleft'?

UPDATE: So, I guess the nursing home facility staff complained to the instructor about this. Here is how she chose to deal with it: She made an announcement to the class to make sure we keep our pants pulled up. She then demonstrated techniques to avoid flashing "the goods" - squatting instead of bending over, holding the back of your pants while bending over, etc.

I casually asked butt-diamond-girl if our instructor said anything to her personally about this whole thing - since she's constantly complaining about her pants falling down - and she giggled and said, "Of course not! I'm smart enough not to bend over when she's around!" and she acted proud of the fact that she's getting away with it. This may sound immature, but I hope she gets an infection in her piercing and walks around like a penguin for a week. I'm also a little more irritated than usual because I got a nice lecture about my nose ring - was walking from clinical site parking lot, taking out my nose ring at the same time, and I was 30 minutes early (always there before everyone else). The instructor came up behind me and started lecturing me on piercings and removing jewelry - even though I wasn't in the building and I wasn't "on the clock" for another 30 mins. I looked at her and said, "You know so-and-so has a piercing right above her butt, right?" And she just looked at me, opened her mouth, closed her mouth, and didn't say anything.

LOL at butt diamond girl!!!

Speaking of whites, so glad our uniforms aren't white. Would have made for a very awkward 20 or so minutes when I got hosed down by the elderly gentleman I was assisting with a shower. Than he went down hill and by the time he was back in bed and stable my scrubs were dry. Had than been white, yea that would have been very uncomfortable with a room full of people :|

You would think that my school would at least allow us to wear royal blue bottoms (royal blue and white are school colors). We've had more issues this year than any other year with students wearing inappropriate under garments - including one male student who chose not to wear anything at all, thinking his pants were thick enough - he learned his lesson though, when an Alzheimer's pt started calling him by her (deceased) spouse's name and trying to touch him through his pants LMAO! I still think about the look on his face when I need a laugh...

To each there own. I do not think piercings such as nose or eyebrow rings should be prohibited or forced to be covered; they are on the face. But a piercing on a body part that should not be seen anyways? NO excuse for why that should be seen. Uncalled for!

Agreed. I think some of the reason for prohibiting such piercings is infection, another is because they're believed to be unprofessional - however, patients have seen worse when most of the nurses who take care of them day after day have tattoos and piercings all over.

I just don't understand - policy is that NO piercings are visible - no tattoos visible, nails must be natural/short/& unpolished, etc. Butt-diamond-girl has managed to violate most policies without reprisals - except for the tattoos because she says they're "trashy" LOL. And a butt piercing isn't? Okaaaay. Last week she came to clinicals with long acrylic nails on and just tried to avoid our instructor as much as possible to avoid dealing with it. She's a walking incubator for bacteria...

Here's a funny butt-crack prank - courtesy of my husband - Back when he was in high school and smoked (doesn't any longer); he would hang out with his friends and smoke. When someone would bend over and show butt crack, they would tap their cigarettes over the crack and ash down the butt crack! LOL...might take up smoking just to do this to butt-diamond-girl...just kidding!

ok seriously butt diamond girl that is great. Im a visual learner so I googled butt dermal. The one right above the crack looks stupid, but the one in the dimples :yelclap:

Eeeeeeeeuuuuuuwwww. I think your classmate cares a lot more about her appearance and getting by with violating the policies than with patient care. That's beyond unprofessional. That's selfish and dangerous.

What really appalls me, though, is that your instructor is so unobservant as to not notice. When I've had clinical groups of ten students, I haven't always had sufficient time to spend with each student. Yeah, a student could moon the entire clinical facility and I might not catch her (or him) in the act if I'm busy with someone else. But I would certainly notice if someone had acrylic nails.

The policy should be equally enforced. If students with nose piercings have to remove their jewelry, so should diamond butt girl. The thing is, if the facility thinks that students from your program are unprofessional, the school COULD lose use of that facility for future clinical groups. Clinical sites are hard to find and students do need to conduct themselves professionally or risk making their school look bad. It is not a chance that I would want to take as an instructor.

Although I can't resist making a twisted crack :grn: about Ms. Diamond Butt, the bottom line :grn: is that this is a serious matter.

How would you suggest I go about bringing this to the attention of my instructor? I've checked the clinical schedule and I don't have butt-diamond-girl in any of my clinicals for the rest of the year (good for me) so I can't really encourage staff to talk to my instructor about it. The last 4 weeks of this semester we spend divided up and I have a different clinical instructor...believe me, I want to resolve this, and so do my classmates - but no one wants to be the snitch except me - and I don't want to cast myself in an unfavorable light. Plus, I don't really have "evidence" of the offense - especially if none of my classmates come forward and I doubt my instructor will call up all the facilities to find out if any staff were offended by the butt-diamond. Luckily, the instructor has butt-diamond-girl in her group the last 4 weeks, so she may see or hear something. I just don't know what to do.

I hate to say this but I think you did what you could. If your instructor isn't seeing this, either the student is REALLY good in terms of hiding or the instructor needs to brush up on her observational skills. If I was the instructor, I would be watching this student like a hawk. I would not encourage a student to "snitch" on another, but if a student told me that another student was flagrantly violating policy and bragging about it, I'd follow up.

You might have to let this one go. Eventually Diamond Butt is going to get noticed by someone who will call her on the carpet for her behavior. Might not be this instructor. Might be the next instructor or an employer.

At least I certainly hope someone does something about this. It's unprofessional, and, as you said in another post, it's potentially hazardous to a patient.

You do realize that the next time I have a clinical group, I'm probably going to be doing thong checks as well as looking for visible piercings in areas that shouldn't be visible in a clinical setting. I shall forever be known as Moogie the Weird. I do thank you for starting this thread because, although we've all had a couple of laughs at this idea, many instructors would not even know to look for a visible backside piercing.
