ANATOMY 1 class is ALWAYS FULL! X(

Published

Hello, I currently attend Cerritos CC (located in OC, California) and am working on my pre-reqs so I can apply to nursing school. The problem is, I've been trying to sign up for the required anatomy class with no luck for a year (always full, even the waiting lists!) and it's driving me crazy! My registration appointment has passed and all the anatomy classes were closed so no luck this time either. I just want to give up nursing altogether because it feels like I'm wasting time and not going anywhere. I applied to the nearby Fullerton CC for Fall 2006 and my registeration appointment date is the 9th of AUGUST and their anatomy classes are filling up and several are closed already. There is Cypress CC which is also pretty near where I live and I emailed the nursing counselor and she told me that their anatomy classes are very popular and if I apply to Cypress the chance that I will get in is not high. What can I do??? I have to take this class to take Physiology (another popular class that fills up quickly) and this whole thing keeps setting me back.......please suggest on what I should do, I'm so frustrated. Thanks.

I had the same problem in SoCal. I tried to get into anatomy at Long Beach City College and was 102 on the waitlist. By the time I started searching for the class at other schools, they were all full as well. The admissions/registration people at Golden West College (Huntington Beach) were generally really nice and helpful. I took a Spanish class there so I could register as a continuing student and managed to slide into one of the last 8 spots in anatomy the following semester. And once I got that done, I got into Physiology no problem.

FYI, at Golden West you can petition every single section of the class and try to get in. The instructor usually pulled names out of a hat to fill the spots of people that didn't show up. If you didn't get pulled out the first time, you could petition the second anatomy class that day, and then the third...seems like your odds are better that way than via waitlist.

Anyway, good luck! I know how frustrating it is!

I was in school with a group of very aggressive pre-med students who didn't take "no" for an answer. What they did in situations like this was show up for the first class and asked for whatever signature, or add on code today, that they needed to get into the class. They kept attending the classes up until the last day to add the class. By then, the instuctor is usually aware of who on the lists of registered students is not attending the class (if attendance has been taken). Try that. Some went even so far as to even continue on in the class and some of them even got the instructors to somehow add them to the roster much later into the quarter or semester. Guess it depends on how much guts you have.

I attend Cypress College. The instructors are all sticklers for taking attendance, so I would point out that any student that hasn't attended the first 3 classes is not going to show up and try to wheadle an add on code out of the instructor.

Something else you could do that isn't quite kosher is to show up for class and insist that you registered when you don't show up on the roster. Continue attending. Tell you sob story that you've been the object of a computer screw up and you have to have this class every session. See if the instructor will "fix" it by letting you in.

Daytonite...LOL whatever works,

I would try it!!

I feel your pain because I was in your shoes three years ago. I attend Cerritos College and am set to graduate the RN program this December.

First off, persistence really plays a big role in this whole thing. If I remember correctly, there are only two lead instructors in that department. Ms. L, and Dr. H. For both I would suggest getting on the waitlist, and e-mailing the instructor before the semester starts. Explain your situation and how long you have been waiting. Most of the time, they will let you in as long as you can get a LAB.

So, my technique was to go to all the labs (yes even the 8 am awful one), and sit in and try to add that way. Pretty soon, these instructors will know your face and may let you in. Try the part time instructors. Often they have more pity. I remember there was a Friday morning lab teacher that let students in, knowing some would drop. Persistence is key. If this doesn't work, I would go straight to the counselors. Make an appointment for a nursing counselor. It does make a difference! If they are fully booked for these next two weeks (school starts the 14th), sit in for a same day appointment. They can add you in immediately and override the system.

Finally don't give up. I know when you're waiting with no end in sight, it's easy to want to change majors. Just know, there is a light! Be open to other colleges as well and apply everywhere. Cerritos actually has more prereqs to get in the nursing program than Cypress or LBCC. Cypress has a nursing class you might want to take if you have spare time, and I know LBCC does something similar. Apply everywhere! Hope everything works out well for you.

Oh and while you're waiting there are some great classes to take even if you decide to take nursing elsewhere...these are things I wish someone had told me when I was waiting with no end in sight.

Medication Calculations (HO56) - When you're in Cerritos' program, they will not lecture you on how to do dosage caluclations. They just give self learning modules. You will have dosage calculations all 4 semesters.

Medical Terminology - I think I would have saved myself a lot of stress my first semester of nursing school if I had taken this. There is a whole lingo out there that I did not get. This helps immensely as well.

I don't know if you've already taken the life spans requirement? However, if you didn't I definitely suggest psych 251 instead. It's transferable Cal States if you decide to go to a different college.

You probably waiting last minute to register. Anatomy is a popular class everywhere. I took Microbiology this summer, I was told it would be full quickly. The same day the schedule came out, I went to see my advisor and I was able to get in. You have to be vigilant when it comes to anatomy. Like other posts have said, try to register online. Good luck to you.

How about try another community college, like ELAC. The instructors there always add at least five people on the first day of class. Some do lottery, some base on first come, first serve policy. Good luck.

I had the same problem in SoCal. I tried to get into anatomy at Long Beach City College and was 102 on the waitlist.

lololol that brings back memories. about a year ago when i decided to pursue healthcare, i had planned on doing the program at lbcc. i enrolled and was similarly wait listed for not one, not two - but 4 classes! funny thing is i used to go to a pretty large university and never ever came close to being that low on a wait list. ever. enrolled at this small cc and -bam! 4 classes @ # 100. for a class that held 40. lolololol!!!

Should I transfer to a cal state or UC let's say as a sociology major and once I get in take the anatomy and physiology classes and then apply to a community college's nursing program? The only classes that I need to finish to apply to a nursing program are A&P 1 and 2 (I'm taking microbiology Fall 2006 at my Cerritos CC, I actually got in)

Why dont you keep on trying, summer, fall, spring on all the nearby colleges..I am sure they offer transfer credits to your nursing program

Is anyone a LVN-RN bridge student at Cerritos, Cypress, LBCC, or Rio Hondo?

If so, do you feel as prepared as students who are not LVNs? Are LVNs immidiately placed in the program if they have fulfilled all necessary pre-requisites, or is there still a waiting list?

Hoping to find some answes to my questions, I can't find them anywhere else.

Usually you will get to register sooner if you have a declared degree. I had your problem and it made me nuts -- finally I signed up for a liberal arts degree and then I got to register for my classes in the first round of registrations.

By the way, we lost about 15% of our A & P I class within the second week. Ended up with places to spare.

The other thing to do is to find out exactly what day you are permitted to register, usually called open registration, and sit at the computer/phone waiting for the exact time to start.

I just realized the OP was ages ago! LOL.
