Several had mentioned starting a study thread early so we could get prepared for our fall A&P class, so here goes. I have gathered several websites from both here and on my own, so wanted to post them early on so that we wouldn't have to search for them. Please feel free to add to them and also any advice or study tactics that seem to work for you.
Thankyou to Eveyone here at AllNurses who have provided so much information in one spot.

Ok, that's it for tonight....I have several others but hopefully this will keep everyone busy for a day or 2 :chuckle:yeah:I'm sure we all have diferent study habits and will need to find our own way there but I am hoping we can work together as a study team.
Maybe each day or two, someone could provide a study tip or an mneumonics for memorization for tissues or nerves, anything that is helping you learn. Or if you come accross somethin that you can't use, maybe someone else can.
OFF to Bed for me
wow cranklin!!! thanks for that.... I just assumed your discipline was in nursing ... I am going to take a look at that......In my school there is a great need for students to get into respiratory. Ive been thinking about maybe sonagraphy....travel nursing is fun If i didnt have any kids thats something I said I would have liked to experience...
I wouldn't sweat it, unless its a 5 week course; which you'd never remember a whole lot afterwards anyway. Selecting your Instructor is the main thing, and then just study.
Those flash cards seem counter productive in studying. You want ways to 'chunk' items to your memory. And those cards do not offer any productive chunking mechanisms I can see. In fact, they could be the difference in squandering your precious time and making a grade or two below what you would if kept studying it, adding more chunking materials for your brain.
The human mind can remember 7 items easily, like a phone number. And then they have prefixes, last 4, area codes; so all the similar prefixes or area codes are like one item each to remember. Then you have your own ways to remember the last 4 if need to over time.
Flash cards are random and not visually attached to anything by any manner. If you try to remember any technical class as seperate items in space, then you will go bananas, get mediocre grades, and never remember anything after the class. This opinion is from a Human Factors Engineering view point. Your mileage may vary.
Actually, I have had a lot of success using flashcards. I think the problem with flashcards isn't the cards but the methods used to learn them. I use my own variation of the Leitner System and works just fine.
I think the most important thing is knowing the material forward and backward. If I look at a picture of a heart with the ascending aorta labeled, and I know that it is that structure, that is just okay. If I am looking at the terms and can visualize the structure in my head, that is great.
The Leitner System is also really all about chunking material.
I have always had sucess using flashcards. poshgirl mine came yesterday and they look great. Plus a bonus I didn't know it but they come with a little ring, so you can store what you are currently studying and carry it around with you like a keychain.
I have never heard of the Leitner System, can you explain or direct me to more info, I can use all the help I can get.
Speaking of help whose have trouble with the cell chapters? I'm glad I started it early because it's going to take some time to wrap my head around it.
I have found this site helpful. Its a biology site for kids, but I find it helpful.
Yeah!! I start A&P 1 this fall also...I just got my text book today and I have to admit I'm a tad intimidated by it!!! It's huge!!!
Good luck all!!!
Mine came in the PO Box today too. We got a new one and it weighs 20 lbs if feels like. Looking at the last books sylabus from Tortora's book, test 1 is Chapters 1 to 4 which is review from Biology electrons to cells to tissues; test 2 is Chapters 5 and 6 which is Skin and Bones tissue; test 3 is Chapters 10 and 12 which is Muscle and Nervous tissue; and test 4 is Chapters 14 to 16 which is the Brain, Sensory Pathways, and Higher Order Neural functions. That is just like our new book too: Martini.
There's also Practicals in Lab worth 30% of both classes grade, around the time of each exam. The last test, Practical, and final within a week will wipe us out I think. Not to mention other classes, and those brave enough to take 2 lab classes together.
No time for foolin' around

Leitner is a little difficult to explain...here is a website that does an okay job. http://granule.sourceforge.net/grapp-manual/granule-manual/C/x602.html

I too have the Tortora book. Yes it is quite large. I have already started chapter 1. All about what anatomy is and homestasis. I have about 60 flash cards on that chapter alone already and am only about 3/4 the way through it. Wiley offers a website to help out, which I may try it.
Good Luck! We can all do it:)
