Am I worrying to much?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

O I had orientation today, and needless to say it was overwhelming. Our dean stated that working at a hospital while in school had benefits and drawbacks. Drawbacks being that if we got fired or dismissed from the position we held, they probably wouldn't let us be students there for our clinicals, thus resulting in withdrawal from NS. Last year I was working at a clinic that belongs to one of our clinical agencies, and I had to quit very suddenly because of extreme personal problems, it also resulted in me withdrawing my classes that semester too. Needless to say my boss new I was struggling with personal issues, I did not put in my two weeks, and I'm scared I made a bad name for myself. I was not fired or anything but quit. Now I'm worried should I call human resources tomorrow and inquiry? I asked the dean of nursing and she said I should be fine since I quit, nit dismissed, and that if any further action was taken I would have been notified. What do you think? Now I'm over analyzing this statement and it's getting scary.

I would speak to someone in your local legal aid office. Many law offices will take cases on for free depending on the circumstance. I am crossing my fingers and praying for you. Keeps us updated.

Do you think that's something legal that I could pursue?!

If you quit I don't think it would be an issue. Don't let it scare you. I would call and ask if you are really worried about it but I think you'll be ok.

I would call them back and explain that you were accepted to Nursing School and wanted to know if quitting your job would make you ineligible to participate if you are assigned to one of their facilities for clinical.

As for your school, I would clarify their policy. I find it very hard to believe that you would not be able to do clinicals anywhere if you are denied access at one specific facility (especially since it is for job abandonment, not something serious like stealing, mishandling drugs or harming a patient)

Check your legal aid office.....call your states BAR association for they offer Pro-Bono services to people......... check through google. There has to be something that can be done. You quit without notice under urgent need and they are going to ruin your college education and life because they are angry and feel put out. You didn't kill anyone. You didn't abuse anyone. It's not a safety issue but a policy issue. You aren't working there they aren't paying you. You are a nursing student. I think they maybe sharing confidential information that can't be shared by labor laws...it's worth the try.

I know I wouldn't go down without a very LOUD objection. This has me REALY ANNOYED:madface:. You quit a job without notice....big deal......that facility needs to GET OVER IT!!!

OP:hug:.

Kayla, no matter what don't give up on your goals. Just ask them if they would allow you to do clinicals, at any of their affiliate facilities. Explain to them that your are in nursing school at FSCC and if you can't do clinicals then you can't be in the program. Also call or go speak to Ms. G, explain to her the situation and see what she says. Worse case scenario is you will have to wait and reapply for the Spring semester. I have a cousin who is in Bishop's NP and they have the same policy. Just get clarity so you can explore all your options. I know that they stress the fact that you can't put in a request for certain sites to go to do clinicals, but it wouldn't hurt for you to see if they will make an exception, since everything will be cleared up by next semester. Because you don't want to start and then get sent somewhere you can't go, if you can't go then you will get an F for the course, and you can't progress to the next till you passed everything. And you know in Alabama you get 2 attempts then you are out, unless you wait a year to start all over again! You don't want to waist your chances on that. Just get clarity from both ends, if you do have to wait then look at it as an opportunity to get ahead in your studies. You can contact me anytime and I will help you in any way that I can to fill you in on what you need to study and expect for the first semester. Good luck and keep me posted.

Since I am not a lawyer I honestly don't know. The fact is you had to quit because of a personal emergency. The fact is this is your future and you shouldn't have to wait. If you are like me you could have spent hundreds of dollars already for school related expenses for the fall. Why should you be out that money or have to wait till the next semester. I would ask them if you will be prevented from doing clinicals there as a student. If you are then I would be seeking legal advice a.s.a.p. I doubt this facility wants to be drug into a potential legal battle over this.

Yes I have already spent hundreds, I'm going to see if I can set up an appointment to speak with the doctor in person.

"Hello, My name is Kayla Winstanley. I know that Mrs. ******* has been in contact with you about changing my rehire status, but i thought perhaps that I could email you so you have a better understanding of my situation. For the past two years I have been in school at Faulkner State Community College pursuing my degree in Nursing, RN. It is my passion and when I look to the future I see myself as a registered nurse and then possibly becoming an emergency medicine nurse practitioner. I have worked very hard these past two years and have applied to over six different nursing programs, and I have gotten rejected from all of them. however, this past month I finally received my acceptance letter to Faulkner State's Nursing Program, I could not believe it when I opened my letter. I thought ,finally my dream is coming true. I have purchased my clinical uniforms, stethoscope, lab supplies, books, and everything. I went to my orientation last week and they told everyone that if they had a " Do not rehire status" that most likely that organization would not allow the students to do clinicals there, resulting from dismissal of the nursing program. I know That you denied my request but i beg of you to reconsider. This will ultimately cost me my education, I cant stay in school if I get dismissed from the nursing program because my student loans will be up after that. Since I'm a dependent student, my student loans will be severed because I will be over the allotted credit hours. I don't think that its right since i had to quit without putting in my two weeks notice that it will cost me my nursing education. I've worked so hard to get to this point, and spent hundreds of dollars in nursing preparation for this semester. Please Mr. ********, consider granting my rehire status. I have been away from infirmary health systems for 7 months, and i know you have to be gone for 12 months. I had extenuating circumstances that did not allow me to put in my two weeks. I lived with my parents in Irvington at the time, and they separated, and my dad took my truck to use since they shared one vehicle between them at the time, I also had to withdraw from my school semester because of that. Since i live so close to Dauphin Island, there was no public transportation that i could take to get to work or school. Even if you have to grant it to me on probationary status, or possibly let me volunteer at the hospital? I will do anything. My education is the most important thing to me, it will be the one thing that no one can ever take away from me. I have worked endlessly to get to where i am at today, and If my rehire status is not granted than I will not be able to complete my dream of becoming a registered nurse. Thank you for taking the time for reading this. If you need to contact me you can at **********, or maybe we can possibly set up a meeting. Thanks so much

Sending a email is ok, but if I were you I would go in and talk to manager face to face because your future in nursing is riding on this approval.
