Am I Smart Enough To Pass?

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Ok, so here is the deal. I am an avergae student. My recent HESI was about a 704 without studying. Do you think that I am a passer. I feel like I am not going to pass because Im not smart enough. How about you all, were you really smart students. I feel that there are those out there that it comes sooooo easy to. Then there are those that I can relate to that are hard workers who just barely get by. Some thoughts, encouragements, advice? what boat were you all in?

Hi Seriphum,

I think it all depends on the individual. If ur gut is telling u that u are not ready than u probably are not...U know what the next step is : to study until u feel u are ready and then go give ur NCLEX. Good luck for our exams.

I think for the most part, if you have what it takes to make it through Nursing school, have good test taking skills and common sense, then you're smart enough and can pass NCLEX.

Obviously we all have differing acedemic abilities and you just have to accept you have to work harder than others. I'm one of those who made nursing school "look" easy because I made A's. But what you didn't see was that I was one of those people who really had to work hard at it, I'm a slow reader, and have a memory that works, but needs a lot of studying and repeating before it stick in there.

You know yourself, your weaknesses and your strengths. It's best to accept them and work with them to maximize your chances, whatever it takes. Don't worry about those who breeze through it.

So to answer your question "Avearge" students can pass NCLEX because an Average grade on NCLEX is all it takes. When you get the RN it doesn't say "I breezed through and got every questions right" or "I barely passed". It says "Registered Nurse".

Good luck and try to not get so hung up on these kinds of things.

Tweety's right :)

I personally tune out when someone says they found the NCLEX "easy" because I know that that person still managed to get half of them wrong, no matter how "easy" s/he found it ;)

And someone who finds it tough as a bear, too, does about the same (assuming we're talking about both people passing).

If you got through school, if you could manage tests there, you are smart enough. The NCLEX tests your judgment, and as long as you've prepared by answering a pile of like-minded questions to get your head in the frame of mind needed, you'll pass.

People who don't pass aren't necessarily "not smart" either (remember that part about getting through school?). But they may not have prepared properly, didn't know how to tackle the types of questions asked. That's why it's great to have a board like this so people can see where their falldowns are (if they've failed) and can find ways to succeed. And for those who have passed, passing on what they know about critical thinking is a boon to those who need it.

Hang in there....the NCLEX is just another test when it comes right down to it :)

OOOH, this is my 1000th post! :D

Why do you "have" to get half the NCLEX questions wrong? Some could pass with 24% wrong even.

I passed the NCLEX-RN on the first time and my HESI was 750, and I did not study for the HESI. I did however study a lot for the NCLEX-RN. I did over 4000 questions from the time I started keeping track. I really practiced questions and questions. I took a review course through Feuer nursing for content review plus questions, and Kaplan. The areas I was weak in I focused my questions on. I also used various NCLEX study books: Saunders, Nursing Bullets, and Mosby's flashcards.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need other advise or ideas for resources

Hi Leixlip,

Read the "sticky" on top of the forum list that says "Number of NCLEX Questions, Students Please Read." It does a really good job of explaining how CAT tests works, and why you get 50% wrong.

Best of luck to you!

I didn't find that, do I have to scroll through all the pages?

It's at the very top of the page.
