Am I being offered a fair pay?

Hi

I am a Registered Nurse and have 3 years of ICU experience. At an interview for ICU RN position, I was much appreciated for my ICU experience but I was offered a pay rate of $24.60/hr in Austin, Texas. Is this ridiculously low pay :uhoh3: or this is the usual pay rate here :p. I used to make way more than this but that was in Australia.

Can you all lovely nursing friends guide me. Should I accept this pay and start or should wait for a better pay. So confused and upset with the pay rate.

help help help....:confused::confused::confused:

Cheers...

Not sure what a fair rate for that area is but do remember that the US dollar has more buying power than the Australian dollar ( not talking about the exchange rate but the lower costs of goods here ). When I moved here from NZ many years ago my first job paid less than what I was making back home but that smaller amount went a long way.

If the pay is fair or not can only be determined by you. If you are satisfied and willing to work for the pay then it is fair.

I'm a home hospice nurse in San Antonio and making around 32.00 plus mileage. I'm not sure what they pay in the hospitals but I thought they paid more. We are looking for 2 RN's if you want to move down the road!!

I am a brand new nurse in Dallas and that amount is my base pay (I work night shift so actually my pay is $3.50 higher making my hourly salary about $28). My friend is in ICU and she accepted $35 to start in the Dallas area. She has about 5 yrs ICU experience.

I have never really focused on the hourly pay rate. For me it is always about getting the shift I want, the unit I want, the travel distance, etc. Three years ago I moved to Alabama and took a big cut in pay, but by the time I factor in the low cost of living, plus I am less than 10 miles from work, I actually end up making the same.

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

G'day, mate! Welcome to America.........and to An!

Here it has EVERYTHING to do with location, location, location. California is probably the higest paid but it is also the highest cost of living and housing. The market here in the US has been strongly affected by the economy and jobs are tight. With many applicants for the same position the pay/hr will drop.....the whole supply and demand thing.

Looking at the boards here I would still say that they are lowballing more than just a bit. Historically....HR has a "range" that they can pay of about $5.00 dollars an hour......I would let them know you ahve done your homework and that while your are new to the country......your expereince is worth more than new grad pay.

Best of Luck !!!!!! th_cheers.gif

Austin is expensive. Your pay ought to be $28-34/hour.

But there is a glut of nurses, and pay scales have been dropping....

To the Hospice Nurse in SA.... Where do you work and do you like it, if you don't mind me asking. I loved the time I worked in Hospice back in Arkansas. I would love to get closer to home (Northwest Arkansas) but I can not afford to take the pay cut. I'm currently working Med Surg in California making $43 an hour. I was making $27 an hour as a house supervisor when I left Arkansas four years ago.

Specializes in Forensic Psych.

Wow...that's how much new grads are making in Houston and our cost of living is a quite a bit lower. I'd be really surprised if that was considered a fair rate in Austin.

Specializes in orthopedic/trauma, Informatics, diabetes.

New grad in NC ~$20 across the board (differentials are varied widely from facility to facility). Not going to complain. I have a job that I love, I like it here. More money would be great, but after being unemployed for 3 years (after losing my job as a teacher-another saturated field) it is enough for us to live comfortably, not extravagantly, take care of our children. I would not move to make more money.

Specializes in Clinical Research, Outpt Women's Health.

Too low. Try for more.

Specializes in Trauma, ER, ICU, CCU, PACU, GI, Cardiology, OR.

unquestionably, it all depends on the state or facility, in addition, i would do a little research around your area in order to get a better idea of the going rate. having said that, i would nicely decline the offer, but then again i already have a job. wishing you the best in all of your future endeavors...aloha~
