Alverno DEMSN 2021

Nursing Students School Programs

I've recently been conditionally admitted to Alverno's demsn program, slated for Summer unless a spot opens up in Spring. The conditional being that I finish the labs for the prerequisites and two psychology courses as I've only finished the didactic portions in a marathon 9 week section.

Does anyone have any experience with this program, or Alverno in general? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Congrats! Great to hear !

I just started with my Ab.Psych course w/ Coopersmith. I will know if I will be starting in May or August after successfully passing my course. Wait, like you will be starrting in January 2022 ? Or, in Mid August or, in September 2021 ?

Do you guys feel at ease to go back in campus during the pandemic ? Especially with the new variants ? I was wondering, how we would even be able to do lab simulations though ? Like CPR training, and more. We have to touch the mannequin...Hmmm 

I asked my enrollment advisor the same question but, she says "they" don't know yet if the Summer or fall semester will be online.

I’m a COVID survivor with robust T cell mediated immunity so I’m not too worried. I’ve had multiple exposures to the virus since surviving.

Just my opinion, but honestly, the death rate isn’t that high for people who don’t have comorbid conditions. If you are concerned take one of the experimental mRNA vaccines they are offering which seem so far to produce a robust T cell response after the second dose and call it good. Nursing is a hazardous job, there are worse things out there than COVID you will run into.

Thanks for your response. I'm glad you survived ! ☺  I work in the nursing field though. ? However, I feel safer at work than going to the store, or any gathering. We take the COVID test every other week at my job and follow guidelines. So far I trust my B cells, my CD4 & CD8 T cells.LOL

I was just curious and wanting to know what you guys think about going back to campus...to sit for 3hrs for a course, compared to working in a NHP,  HSP, Assisted Livings, where you're constantly moving/washing hands. ☺

I’m more worried about c.diff, mrsa, etc. there is some scary stuff out there.

That's true. Most bacteria are antibiotic resistant these days....and microbiologists are the ones who get less funds for research.

Thanks Katoo!! I’m supposed to be starting August 2021, but she said the start date has been pushed back to late August early September 2021.

Maybe I am mixed up in my reading the forums but I thought you had a stormy course with Covid.

That being said, the established and licensed health professionals at Alverno and Milwaukee County will provide guidance with your clinical practicums.

I did. It was horrific. Since then my subsequent exposures have been relatively harmless.

I would consider MERS worse than COVID, adenovirus type 7 in an immunocompromised patient, etc. there are plenty of things worse than COVID. They just don’t spread as easily and kill their hosts faster.

Yes, in the history of plagues and pandemics we have had sweating sickness, small pox and typhoid (which is still around today). In the real industrial world that I participate daily in..as Katoo said

There is too much said of things/disease  that will likely not befall us if we practice good hygiene. Too many scare mongerers among us.  Things may be different when traveling to other countries. I maintain a positive view that I am in safe hands here with regards to infectious disease if I follow established guidelines.

No. There are many many things out there that are worse than covid and carry much higher death rates. Ever heard of prions? Look into some of the fungal and bacterial species that we have no drugs for. Ebola even has a higher death rate. Just because you don’t see these things in your specialty, especially seeing as you work in oncology and not something like an ICU, does not provide you the expertise to say that covid is the worst thing out there. Not trying to challenge your credibility, but there are many many more things in the literature that I would take covid over. 

As for the rest of you, I have been admitted to Alverno and am waitlisted for the fall, but for sure in for Spring! Can’t wait to start!

The instructors so far are just great. I think you will love it.
