Alverno DEMSN 2021

Updated:   Published

I've recently been conditionally admitted to Alverno's demsn program, slated for Summer unless a spot opens up in Spring. The conditional being that I finish the labs for the prerequisites and two psychology courses as I've only finished the didactic portions in a marathon 9 week section.

Does anyone have any experience with this program, or Alverno in general? Any advice would be much appreciated.

That’s so exciting! When did you submit your application? How long did it take you to receive your admittance? I submitted my application for the fall 2021 term and can’t wait to hear back

Well, you can’t really metric by my situation. I was waiting for approval to excuse a foreign transcript for 1 math class that I took while living overseas that wasn’t a apart of any degree.

They were pretty zippy overall. Great to deal with. They helped me iron out all of the issues in my application while I was doing all the didactic science prerequisite coursework through straighterline. But when I actually was able to submit to committee it took them less than 10 or so days to get the email approving me.

I've heard if spots open, which tends to happen every 2 weeks from what they have told me, you can get into an earlier cohort. Maybe we will end up attending at the same time!

Thank you for sharing and CONGRATS on your acceptance! I doubt I’ll get into an earlier cohort as I’m still completing my bachelor’s degree. I graduate from undergrad in May 2021!

Hmm. They have a Summer 2021 start so there’s a chance. Congratulations! What was your major?

My major is Cell and Molecular Biology. How about yourself?

Oh my, what a delightfully interesting field! I’m surprised you aren’t going for MD or DO. I had thought about doing the BS in Biochemistry at Carroll and applying to Medical College of Wisconsin.

I majored in Religion at Liberty. Hence why I had to eat about 5000-6000 pages of books in a big hurry to qualify for entrance. I had no background in the sciences, though I did have a background outside of University in computer programming and advanced electronics design.... so, not totally unfamiliar with scientific principles, mathematics, etc. I loved detail on the underlying chemical processes in Prescott’s Microbiology. You are so lucky to have studied something as fascinating as cell biology!

I am a current student. Please choose another program it is not what it seems.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have that luxury. I’ve almost wrapped up my labs and am set for a January start; though I may push it out to the Summer.

I have just applied to Alverno and they are reviewing my application for fall 2021 DEMSN. I have heard such mixed reviews about this college and I don't know what to think. Have you been in touch with any current DEMSN students? Anything I should know?

I have had no contact with alumni, but as with any nursing school I think online reviews are a mixed bag. I’m looking forward to starting in January.

When I lived in Milwaukee in the 80s, I only heard great things about Alverno. Seriously, everyone who did student teaching there or attended there would get this dreamy look in their eyes when they talked about Alverno's educational model and its support of women. I did see they do accept men for certain programs. Can you summarize what is going on with the DEMSN program now?

I taught at Columbia College and I just read Alverno bought the college. I can't figure out why -- to eliminate the competition? To enlarge the nursing program, get clinical sites at St. Mary's ? Or to consolidate the Catholic ownership of both programs?
